Yahoo announces LiveText – details

“So today, we’re introducing Yahoo Livetext – a new way to communicate that blends the immediacy, simplicity and ease of texting with the expressiveness of video, without the audio. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been testing Yahoo Livetext in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ireland, and we’re really excited about what we’ve heard from our community so far. Starting tomorrow, we’ll be releasing Yahoo Livetext in five new countries – U.S., U.K., Canada, Germany and France.

Just go to the App Store and Google Play Store tomorrow to check it out, and let us know how you’re using Yahoo Livetext to connect. Livetexting is better together.”

Not sure what to make of this. Doubt it will catch on. But what do you think?

Which Streaming Service?

Currently, I am a month into my 6 month Google Play All Access trial, a week into my Deezer 3 month trial and I subscribe to Tidal HiFi. I have yet to start my 3 month Apple Music Trial. And then came Amazon UK yesterday and added PrimeMusic to my Prime account at no extra cost.

So far my ranking of these services are as follows with the best first and the worst one last.

First – Tidal HiFi – if you’re going to pay it better sound bloody marvellous. And it really does with its FLAC recordings. I’m actually listening to Tidal as I type this ! I also like the music discovery on Tidal. I have found many new artists.

Deezer – it’s flow option works well for me as does the different genres on offer across the world.

Google Play All Access – it’s is dreadful since its last update. It has removed many genres from the new releases eg classical and jazz. However, in its free mode, I can still stream my entire music collection.

Amazon PrimeMusic – in last place as the catalogue is weak. Yet to its credit it did play some great tunes yesterday but I’ve noticed it quickly deteriorates to older tracks when it can. And consequently its in last place. However, I will still use it as I get it with my Amazon Prime service.

I’ve still got Apple Music to try which I’m looking forward to due to its extensive catalogue of songs.

So what is your favourite streaming service ?

Apple iPod Touch (2015) – First Impressions

I got to spend a small amount of time with Apple’s new iPod. It’s cute, light, thin and in a few new colours. Personally I thought blue and black were the best colours.

The camera is decent enough, the screen feels small but it still remains the cheapest option to join the Apple eco system. The operating system takes up approximately 5gb of memory, so 16gb leaves 11gb free. I would say that is cutting it fine so would recommend the 32gb iPod, costing £199.

So what would you use the iPod for? Gaming, music, video, taking photos, facetime, imessage and more. Is it worth it? Probably. Did I like it? Yes I did and would consider it so that I can play some of my owned iOS games. I would also use it for FaceTime. Apart from that, there is not much to dislike and plenty to like.

Is it worth £159 for the 16gb? Still not sure on that one.

Apple reports record Third Quarter Results – Yet share Price drops 8% – details and viewpoint

Press release from Apple – http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/07/21Apple-Reports-Record-Third-Quarter-Results.html

CUPERTINO, California — July 21, 2015 — Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2015 third quarter ended June 27, 2015. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $49.6 billion and quarterly net profit of $10.7 billion, or $1.85 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $37.4 billion and net profit of $7.7 billion, or $1.28 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 39.7 percent compared to 39.4 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 64 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The growth was fueled by record third quarter sales of iPhone® and Mac®, all-time record revenue from services and the successful launch of Apple Watch™.

“We had an amazing quarter, with iPhone revenue up 59 percent over last year, strong sales of Mac, all-time record revenue from services, driven by the App Store, and a great start for Apple Watch,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The excitement for Apple Music has been incredible, and we’re looking forward to releasing iOS 9, OS X El Capitan and watchOS 2 to customers in the fall.”

“In the third quarter our year-over-year growth rate accelerated from the first half of fiscal 2015, with revenue up 33 percent and earnings per share up 45 percent,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “We generated very strong operating cash flow of $15 billion, and we returned over $13 billion to shareholders through our capital return program.”

Apple is providing the following guidance for its fiscal 2015 fourth quarter:
-revenue between $49 billion and $51 billion
-gross margin between 38.5 percent and 39.5 percent
-operating expenses between $5.85 billion and $5.95 billion
-other income/(expense) of $400 million
-tax rate of 26.3 percent

Viewpoint – Apple’s results derive mainly from iPhone sales and China. Apple missed Wall Street estimates by posting earnings of $1.85 per share, and as a consequence market share price is currently down 8%. China alone represented nearly 27% of the revenue in Q3. Apple said they would have 40 stores in China by mid 2016. iPad sales continued to drop. Mac sales have increased slightly, by 9% year on year. Maybe the iPad is at the end of its huge growth period now. Maybe a brand new version will spur growth. Tim Cook refused to reveal any Apple Watch figures which seems bizarre. Apple want to keep the numbers private so competitors are not aware of the sales figures. Not sure I buy that answer. However, I do agree with Tim Cook that the Apple Watch could be a big Xmas filler. However, it does account for 100% growth in the Other Category ($1bn) and offsets the decline in iPod sales and accessories. With a figure of $1bn I imagine Apple have sold between 1.8m to 2m watches. Personally, the future is bright for Apple. With Apple Pay, Apple Music and all the connected products, it is still a bonanza day and future for the company.

Apple news

Apple Pay seems on track for its UK launch tomorrow, Tuesday 14th July 2015.

Whilst not officially announced by Apple the evidence is ramping up. Waitrose last week confirmed in an internal memo to its staff the data, HSBC tweeted the date yesterday and many other retailers are providing small bits of evidence too.

In other Apple news, tomorrow is also the rumoured date for a possible refresh on the iPod range which hasn’t seen a refresh in years.

The Press say “Apple Watch is a Doomed” or “A Flop”

If you head over to macrumors.com or dailymail.co.uk the Apple Watch is heading for a disaster. Back in April 2015, 200,000 Apple Watches were being sold per day. Now that number in the US has possibly plummeted to as low as 2,000 watches.

What planet is everyone on?

I may wear a LG Watch Urbane currently, but I bet LG has not even sold 2,000 of these in the last 3 months. Apple have entered the smart watch space and taken it by storm, and now are the number one selling smart watch brand, and by some crazy huge margin.

I have looked at all the features of the Apple Watch and wish some of those were on my LG Watch Urbane. LG still haven’t sorted out their Health app and syncing the heart rate from the Urbane. Google updated Google Fit and broke the heart rate monitoring on the Urbane. Meanwhile, Apple sells thousands of watches every day. Seems Apple has the upper hand.

Some perspective. The Apple Watch is a non essential item, a luxury item, yet it sells really well. It will continue to sell over a longer period of time, as all jewellery does.

For now, Apple is in a good position. If the numbers completely dwindle, well then a new strategy will be needed.

Warning – iCloud Music Library and Apple Music – details to be aware of – Updated

“There are lots of people frustrated with iCloud Music Library due to it deleting music or messing up iTunes libraries. Now the new and updated service which is almost identical to iTunes Match introduces DRM. Turned on, iCloud Music Library is taking your music that you supposedly rightfully own and place in your iTunes library, the automatically adding DRM protection to it. In essence, it’s placing a lock on music that’s already yours.

Previously if you ripped an album and added it to your iTunes library, the service would search through the iTunes database, match the songs, and save them for access on all devices. You could also get DRM-free download. iCloud Music Library, included with an Apple Music subscription locks your music with DRM, even the tracks you put there in the first place from the CD you possessed.

Additionally, if you cancel your Apple Music subscription, you lose access to all of your music whether you ripped it and added it yourself or not. If you’re planning on ripping music from albums, adding it to iTunes, then throwing the CD out, don’t do it. If you ever lose your data or cancel your subscription, iCloud Music Library gets to keep the songs and you’re without the music you bought.

In addition, iOS 8.4 has removed home sharing support for Apple Music.”

I wonder how many people read the updated legal agreement that came with iOS 8.4? Perhaps everyone should have! This does not sound like a great move by Apple. If they had to add DRM, then this should have been made clearer. Seems like a right mess at the moment.

Update – Nick @Ratkat mentioned there is more to this. Basically your existing library on your Mac or PC remains unchanged, that is the originals are still there. Unless your physically delete every song in your library, and then re download them again using the Apple Music. Thanks Nick.

Apple Watch impacts Swiss Watch Makers Shipments – details

“The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FSWI) has announced today that for the first time since 2009 exports of traditional timepieces are down, and it looks like Apple Watch is to blame.

Wristwatch exports from Switzerland fell almost 9 percent between April and May, according to the FSWI numbers. The news comes on the heels of the launch of Apple Watch on April 24th, which combined with fluctuating currency markets to cause the industry’s first slump in over six years.

“Watch exports to the U.S. in the lower price segments could also have had some negative impact from the launch of the Apple Watch,” analyst Patrik Schwendimann told Bloomberg. The U.S. market might only grow by a low single-digit percentage this year, slowing down from 6 percent growth in 2014, he said.”

Just shows how much of an impact Apple has made from never selling a watch to gaining market share especially in the high profit margin area.
