Unable to buy the Note 5 – Don’t worry Microsoft has you totally covered with its new phone!

MSNote

If you live in the UK or Europe, Samsung has deprived you of the ability to buy the Note 5 which includes its own stylus.

However, no need to worry, as Microsoft has you covered with its new Microsoft Surface Phone which comes with a stylus.

The rumoured phone and specs a 5.5-inch AMOLED display of 1440×2560 16:9, Gorilla Glass 4, Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, 64 and 128GB of expandable storage, Surface Pen compatibility, USB Type-C, Wireless Charging, and all wrapped in an Aluminum and Magnesium unibody, a 21MP PureView Zeiss 6-lens primary camera and an 8MP Zeiss Wide-Angle selfie camera all running Windows 10 Mobile.

If Microsoft release a phone with these specs at a reasonable price then it is something I will be considering.

What about yourself?

Microsoft working on a launcher for Android – Arrow Launcher – Details plus Download

In another move on building apps and services for Android and iOS instead of pushing their own Windows Phone first, Microsoft is working on a launcher for android, called Arrow launcher.

Arrow Launcher includes three pages. A People, Apps and Notes & Reminders page.

You can download the APK from here http://microsoft-news.com/this-is-microsofts-arrow-launcher-for-android-download-apk/ and request to join the Google+ Beta group here https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/109393011462139141948 . Seems weird to think Microsoft has a Google+ group page for android software!

Microsoft Lumia 550, Lumia 750, Lumia 850, Lumia 950 and 950 XL – The Specs revealed

Surprise, surprise the specs have secretly been revealed on the range of Microsoft 10 Phone devices. Call me sceptic, but I am sure the respective companies “leak” these rumours. Anyway, below are the headline specs of the 5 new Lumia devices all set to run Windows 10.

Microsoft Lumia 550 – a 5-inch 540×960 display, Gorilla Glass 3, 1GHz Snapdragon 210 processor, Adreno 304 GPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, HSPA connectivity, 5 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front camera. Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 1905 mAh battery.

Microsoft Lumia 750 – a 5-inch 720p display, Gorilla Glass 3, 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 processor, Adreno 306 GPU, 1GB RAM / 8GB + microSD combo, HSPA connectivity, an 8 megapixel rear camera with Zeiss optics, 5 megapixel front camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 2650 mAh battery.

Microsoft Lumia 850 – a 5-inch 1280×768 display, Gorilla Glass 3, a 1.4 GHz Snapdragon 410 with an Adreno 306 GPU, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of expandable storage, rear camera is a 10 megapixel PureView, Zeiss Optics. 5 megapixel front camera, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 2,650 mAh battery.

Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL – a metal design, expandable storage, removable batteries and Windows 10 software. Lumia 950 will have a 5.2-inch 2K display, a Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, a 20-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front camera, a 3,000 mAh battery and USB-C. The Lumia 950 XL will be similar hardware, but with a 5.7-inch display, a Snapdragon 810 chip, a 3,300mAh battery, 3 flash rear camera.

The new flagship Lumia 950 is also rumoured to have Iris scanning to unlock and also include a stylus similar to the Microsoft Surface.

Now just imagine Microsoft also announces that along with Windows 10, the Windows App Store has been overhauled with all the crap, fakes and copies all removed, and then the top 200 apps from the iOS App Store are now available in the Windows App Store. Would you be interested?

Microsoft cuts nearly 8,000 jobs from its Phone Division – plus more

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has stated that the company needed to make some “tough choices” in areas that aren’t working.

Now, it’s announced that 7,800 jobs will be cut from the mobile division working on Windows Phone hardware.

Satya Nadella sent the following email to the staff –

“We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem including our first-party device family,” Nadella said. “In the near-term, we’ll run a more effective and focused phone portfolio while retaining capability for long-term reinvention in mobility.”

Nadella reiterated that Microsoft is “committed to our first-party devices including phones” but needs to “focus [its] phone efforts in the near term.”

The company will also write off $7.6 billion from the acquisition of Nokia.

It also said that “the future prospects for the Phone Hardware segment are below original expectations” due to the new plans.

This is huge with the true impact of the direction of the Microsoft phone business under question now. Will Microsoft just make one or two phones or a small handful or none at all. Or is the future an Android based phone with Microsoft services?

Acer ES1 Laptop – review

Acer ES1 10

Acer kindly sent me an Espire ES1 laptop for review. The Espire ES1 is part of a range of laptops from Acer that offer low cost pricing with different ram, screen sizes and storage configurations. The Acer ES1-512 is a 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive with a 15.6 inch screen that retails around the £200 mark.

The key specs are –

– Operating System – Windows 8.1 with upgrade to Windows 10
– Processor – Intel Celeron N2840 Dual-core 2.16 GHz, 64 bit
– Screen – 39.6 cm (15.6″) HD (1366 x 768) 16:9 CineCrystal
– Graphics- Intel HD Graphics with Shared Memory
– Memory – 4 GB, DDR3L SDRAM
– Storage – 500gb HDD
– SD Card Memory Slot
– Wireless LAN Standard IEEE 802.11b/g/n
– Ethernet Technology Gigabit Ethernet
– Built in Devices – Webcam, Microphone
– HDMI, 2 x USB 2 ports, 1 x USB 3 port,
– Weight – 2.4kg
– Up to 7 hours battery life, Battery 3,220mAH
– Height 26.1mm x Width 381.6mm x Depth 258mm

The first thing I noticed about the laptop is the texture. Acer describe this as “a distinctive easy-grip or Flow Curve design for secure handling in all situations with a Fibonacci dot pattern cover for good looks that is smooth to the touch. The chiclet keyboard offers you well-spaced keys for a comfortable and quiet typing experience.” And in my usage with the laptop I do agree with Acer’s view that it is easy to hold and comes with a good sized keyboard.

The touchpad has touch gestures such as pinch, flick and swirl. If you haven’t used one of these multi use touchpads, there is a small adjustment period needed to learn the ropes.

Acer has an audio system called TrueHarmony that delivers a more lifelike and richer audio, while also providing Skype-certified components for crystal clear, instant communication and uninterrupted audio and video, without fear of echoes, gaps or lags. In practise using Skype worked well and the music/audio was reasonable loud and clear too. For Skype video, the Acer laptop includes a webcam and microphone.

Acer ES1 11

Acer ES1 12

The laptop currently runs Windows 8.1, but during first start up there is a registration screen to get a notified for the upgrade to Windows 10, which is being offered for free. As I mentioned above, the trackpad took me a little while to adjust too as it operates differently to my MacBook. But once I got the hang of it after an hour or so, it was a breeze to use. The Acer configuration I have is configured with 4gb of ram. 8gb is available on the other models provided by Acer along with a 17 inch screen too. In use 4gb of ram is reasonable. Small delays between screens or carrying out processes can occur. Whilst this particular configuration only costs £200, I would recommend stretching to the 8gb options if possible especially if using media type applications.

If I had one complaint, it is that Acer add so much bloatware. Lots of free trials that are often trials of much older versions of the software. However, McAfee is offered one year for free.

Other than that, the Acer ES1-512 laptop is a reasonable budget machine.
