Microsoft Lumia 950 – I’m Sorry – Editorial

I have featured and reviewed many of the Nokia Lumia phones. My excitement for the new Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL was huge. Why? I really like the Windows Phone tiled interface and with a few sacrifices and work arounds it was possible to use a Lumia phone as a main device. The other benefit was its first rate camera.

So yesterday morning I was out shopping and in Carphone Warehouse and low and behold they had a 950 on display and turned on. The 950 XL is not available to buy as I have already explained a few days ago. It is only available for pre order, due 19th January, due to Carphone Warehouse awaiting new firmware updates to remove the bugs. My plan was to purchase a 950.

So there I was using the Lumia 950. Oh such joy using seeing the tiled interface and Windows 10. Well that joy was over fast.

“I’m Sorry”.

I’m sorry but I have firmly decided that after my 20 mins play with the Lumia 950 I am not going to buy this phone. If Microsoft decide to send me one to review that will be the only way I will even consider spending any time with this phone.

In 20 mins with the Lumia 950 which was rebooted just to make sure it was at optimal performance, it seemed to lag worse than any phone I have used in over 12 months. It crashed 3 times, 3 times in 20 mins. We all know there is an app gap both in terms of names of apps and even if the app is on Windows Phone it is rarely with the same feature set. You could say I have been spoilt by iOS 9.2 apps and 3D Touch on the iPhone and this is so true. The diversity and quality of apps on iOS is huge. Android has a decent selection too.

I’m sorry that I have decided that I am not going to get a Windows Phone as I am not prepared to have a second rate app experience. Nor am I going to buy a phone that is clearly in BETA. Now there is nothing to say Microsoft won’t fix the bugs but what are they going to do with their app store which is a disgrace. The Windows store needs clearing out the rubbish and copy cat cloned apps.

Now I know that I am going to get a deluge of hate mail due to this negative article. I did last time I wrote something remotely negative. Well I’m sorry if you feel like acting like an idiot. But let’s face the truth.

The truth. Part of my decision making process was also based on what other people have said about the 950. I have followed carefully many window phone fans across social media. You expect their posts to be biased. The facts are that the hardy fans are not that happy. A devout fan has been posting photos with his Nexus 6 and not his new 950 for example. Why, he is not happy with the 950. Phones Show Chat Podcast went live yesterday and the 950 got discussed and not positively. The next truth is the camera is not ahead of the competition anymore like it always used to be. Samsung, LG and Apple all offer cameras of equal quality and ahead in many ways too.

Will I reconsider a Windows Phone? Maybe, as anything can happen in tech in 18 months. And 18 months is how long I think it will take for Microsoft to either change the fortunes of Windows Phone or call it time and revert to apps and services.

So I’m sorry there will be no Microsoft Lumia articles for the foreseeable future unless some major update(s) occur and change the BETA status of this phone to something more stable. In addition the price needs to drop too. The 950 creaked from its cheap plastic build. I have never felt so disappointed about a new flagship in ages.

Update – based on emails already received, some of you would like me to review this phone. Well if somebody would like to buy a 950 for me to thoroughly test and review then please get in touch. Contact details can be found in the about menu.

Apple Watch versus FitBit Charge HR – Editorial

Last year I wrote a review on the FitBit Charge HR using it with MyFitnessPal. My review is here – https://gavinsgadgets.com/2015/02/17/fitbit-charge-hr-review-including-using-it-with-myfitness-pal/

I used my FitBit Charge HR to monitor my sleep, activity and compete with a few friends to keep me motivated. I also linked my FitBit with MyFitnessPal to coordinate the food intake with my fitness and weight loss. The two pieces of technology together were very successful and a joy to use.

Both FitBit and MyFitnessPal have updated their software to provide a better experience. However, since last year the Apple Watch has arrived and I have linked this up to MyFitnessPal as well.

After several months I will update you with my thoughts on whether the Apple Watch really is a decent fitness device that takes on FitBit and the FitBit Charge HR. My goal is weight loss.

Now don’t scream at the screen and say they are different devices and prices. Of course they are but I want to try and document my thoughts in this process.

Keep tuned and have a good weekend.

Happy New Year – Gavin’s Gadgets Annual Report

Happy New Year everyone! Wishing you all a healthy and happy 2016.

WordPress provides an annual report each year and I thought I would share some of this information with you with some added commentary.

I started Gavin’s Gadgets in late December 2012 frustrated by the lack of independent tech and gadget websites. Many had closed or lost interest and my usual places to publish my reviews had ceased to exist. So just before Christmas Eve 2012, I downloaded the WordPress app on my iPad and 10 minutes later was up and running. At that point in time, I had no idea where my blog would venture or even if it would last more than a few months.

Move forward 3 years and it has grown exponentially EVERY YEAR with 2015 being an ever bigger surprise to the year before, which was in its own right was just as crazy in growth and readership.

As I said ,2015 was another amazing year and thanks to so many of you helping, commenting across all social media, and even picking up on my odd typo 😀

I would like to also thank all the people, PR companies, podcasters, online stores and my competitors who have supported Gavin’s Gadgets. I would also like to thank my wife for all her support and patience while I typed one post after another!

Wordpress provides data on the geographical reach and in 2015 that reach stretched to 203 countries.

Apart from readers in the UK, USA and Germany, the top spots comprised of India, Canada, Australia, France, Sinapore, European Union, Netherlands, Indonesia, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Spain, Malaysia, Philippines, Finland, Brazil and Turkey.

I have read down the list of all 203 countries and it just shows how much reach the Internet has nowadays. The diversity and selection of the countries visiting Gavin’s Gadgets covers the entire planet Earth.

In 2015 I published 987 posts, with over 100 reviews. With nearly 4,000 posts, using the search icon near the top right will reveal information on most tech stuff. I have also noticed that even articles written in 2013 are read regularly. WordPress stated in their annual report that “Your writing has staying Power”.

I can’t believe I had a day off on 7th May 2015 to break 365 days continuous posting! In fact since Dec 2012 there has been new posts or reviews every day.

During the course of 2015 I extended the social platforms where Gavin’s Gadgets could be reached. It now covers Twitter, Google+, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram and Flickr. And finally in November 2015 appeared in Apple News.

In 2016, additional focus will be occur with virtual reality, audio, photography and connected home devices. This will be in addition to all the usual stuff.

So finally it remains for me to thank everyone for their support over the last 3 years to make Gavin’s Gadgets one of  the UK’s largest independent tech and gadget websites.

Thank you!

And finally, my phone of the year award goes to the LG G4. It just took better photos than anything else I used. Difficult subjects like animals and pets were a breeze. RAW was excellent too. And the pixel detail was ahead of anything else. Plus as its price tumbled quickly you got and still get a lot of phone for your money. Add to the fact you have replaceable batteries and micro sd card support, an infra red blaster and slimport mhl out it out specified most other phones. In second place goes the Samsung Note 5 followed closely by the Apple iPhone 6S Plus or Huawei Nexus 6P.

However, if the camera was not important to you, most other phones nowadays take decent shots. Honourable mentions go to the Honor 7 with a £210 price point, amazing build quality and some sweet extras like the smart button and its special camera modes for example super night mode.

On a Tripod – iPhone 6S vs Sony QX10 vs HTC Re Camera

As you can see from the photo above, it was a foggy day. The photo above was snapped using a Huawei G8. Below are 3 photos taken of the church from the iPhone 6S Plus, Sony QX10 and HTC Re.

Apple iPhone 6S Plus

Sony QX10

iPhone 6S Plus – 8mp still from 4K video

Now what is surprising is how the Sony QX10 and HTC Re have all had several firmware updates since launch, so actually at this point in time are near their optimised state. And this shows in the usage of the cameras as they both performed much better than when I originally had the QX10 and speaking to a tech colleague also confirmed that the HTC Re was now improved since its release.

The 8mp still extracted from 4K video is the same video shown in the previous post.

Filming 4K on the iPhone 6S Plus

So you have an iPhone 6S or 6S Plus.

With a tripod and a few extra pieces you can start to get creative. Attached to the tripod is TARION Model TR-S120 Track Slider Stabilizer which in turn has the ShoulderPod S1 Smartphone Grip and R1 Pro.

On the Shoulderpod R1 Pro is the Sony QX10 and HTC Re used for a few stills. The below video shows a shot of the church, taken on the iPhone 6S Plus, HTC Re and Sony QX10. Each photo is labelled. Finally the iPhone 6S Plus is used to film in 4K using the slider for effect.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL removed from sale – details

This is not good news.

The new Microsoft Lumia 950 XL has been removed from sale by Carphone Warehouse. The standard 950 is not impacted.

This information was confirmed to myself by a Microsoft representative within Carphone Warehouse.

I was told the 950 XL needed a new firmware before going back on sale. Currently it’s only pre order now with a due date of 19th January 2016.

This makes me wonder if it’s trouble again with the snapdragon 810 processor. Or maybe not its current firmware there were too many returns so Carphonewarehouse is waiting to sell stock once a newer firmware is ready.

Either way this is not a good start for the new phone.

The Tascam US 2×2 Experience

The Tascam Trackpad is really simple to use. Just connect it via USB and you are ready to go. If you are connecting to an iOS device you will need the optional power supply and Apple camera connection USB lead. The microphone comes in 3 sections. The tripod base screws on to the microphone support and then the mic itself slides into the support. The tripod legs move to your desired position. The included headphones have a fairly neutral sound but are better than expected. I did try the headphones with a few of my other audio devices too and with similar conclusions. To see how well the Tascam Trackpad performed I invited over three friends over to help. One played guitar, one was on vocals and the other on the synthesizers. We connected everything up to the Tascam Trackpad, and my mac. You can use GarageBand to record everything or use the additional software included – SONAR X3 LE and Ableton Live Lite 9. After recording for around an hour, we played back the various recordings. The quality was really good. My friends were rather impressed too at just what was possible from such a low cost package. As you can see from the photos, the Tascam Trackpad is not huge in size or weight which makes it fairly portable.

Conclusion

This is my first foray into the world of studio recording. I was surprised at just how versatile this piece of technology is from Tascam. My mac recognised the Tascam immediately and it was a breeze to record in high quality. Add to the fact, I could have used my iPhone or iPad via GarageBand to record the performance as well. And all for £145!!.
