Pebble cancels the Pebble Time 2 and Core – It’s Game Over

41uv5fadkyl

“Fitbit is very close to announcing its plan to purchase Pebble, according to a new report from Bloomberg, which describes the rumored deal as “imminent.” The leading maker of fitness trackers has offered jobs to roughly 40 percent of Pebble’s staff, with most of those going to software engineers. Fitbit’s buyout of Pebble will focus on the smartwatch startup’s software assets, like the operating system on Pebble’s existing devices.

But the deal will reportedly not cover any hardware — including both current and future Pebble products. “The rest of Pebble’s assets, including product inventory and server equipment, will be sold off separately” says the report, which is backed by sources said to be familiar with the acquisition.

As a result, the Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Core will be canceled and won’t ever ship to Kickstarter backers and pre-order customers. Refunds will be issued to everyone that supported either product through crowdfunding.”

Not much to say other than its a shame to see that Pebble will cease to exist soon, but one can only hope that all the talented engineers from Pebble help make Fitbit devices even better.

Wide Aperture Mode on the Huawei P9 – Is it better than the iPhone 7 Plus Portrait mode?

War Memorial #Princetown #wideaperture #HuaweiP9 #OO

Just look at the bokeh on the above shot, taken with the Huawei P9 in wide aperture mode.

With wide aperture mode, you can re-adjust the F stop and also apply some fancy effects like below.

War Memorial #wideaperture #special #bokeh #Princetown #HuaweiP9 #OO

Below is another shot which keeps the church sign in focus and everything else out of focus.

Gates of Death #church #wideaperture #bokeh #HuaweiP9 #OO

The shot below is another example of the wide aperture mode.

Graveyard Cross #bokeh #wideaperture #mode #HuaweiP9 #OO

So how does the wide aperture mode compare to the iPhone 7 Plus. Below are some portrait shots from the iPhone 7 Plus.

Dartmoor Pony #PortraitMode #iPhone7Plus

Roses #iPhone7Plus #PortraitMode

Through the Cross #iPhone7Plus #PortraitMode

So the iPhone 7 Plus can takes some great looking portrait mode shots but don’t forget it tells you when you have aligned the iPhone correctly.

The Huawei P9 is far more flexible. It will also work in poorer lighting and has the ability to re-alter and save a new image from the original with a different focus point and f stop from f/0.95 to f/16 as well as add some gimmicky effects. The P9 does have more bokeh errors.

So which do you prefer? The wide aperture mode of the Huawei P9 or the Portrait mode of the iPhone 7 Plus?

Apple HomeKit vs Amazon Echo Dot – My Experience – Alexa vs Siri vs Google

Black Friday arrived. And so did a price reduction on the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. I quickly setup the Echo Dot.

Echo Dot

Now in terms of potential options that can connect to the Echo Dot, the list is fairly vast. But what you have to do is add a skill into the Alexa app. I connected my Belkin Wemo Smart Lights to the Echo Dot via a third party skill using an app to link everything. The app was called Yonomi. Alexa needed me to speak voice commands pretty precisely otherwise it failed to deliver the result I required. In fact, after getting my lights setup, it just stopped working with the lights. I also had issues with voice recognition. Several times, it decided I wanted to enquire about the price of goods and asked if I wanted to buy it.

To stop unwanted purchases, I strongly recommend adding a pin code which you will need to be spoken to confirm any expenditure.

Other things, like playing music and other miscellaneous items worked. A bonus is playing podcast. Just say Alexa, play Tech Addicts Podcast and it will play the latest episode. This is accomplished by Tunein Radio.

All these skills and services make the Echo quite compelling and gives it an advantage over any other option with the following proviso being its security.

The only part that worried me about the Amazon Echo setup is the security aspect, or lack of. Skills were added via a third party. Amazon had no 2 factor authentication. And what about these third party services and apps needed to add skills? Again, the security aspect is not controlled centrally by Amazon or with 2 factor authentication.

Apple HomeKit.

HomeKit

I have seen the HomeKit app on my iPhone 7 Plus for ages and it did nothing. So after being totally frustrated with the Belkin Wemo Smart Lights, I invested in the Philips Hue lights, which work on both the Echo and Apple HomeKit.

I decided to setup the Philips Hue in my living room first. It was so simple to install and setup. Then to link into the Apple HomeKit and Siri was quick and easy as well. Remote access is controlled by my Apple TV v4. You cannot activate remote access unless you have 2 factor authentication on your iCloud account. So unlike Amazon’s setup, the Apple solution feels and is far more secure. No third parties controlling the internet devices.

Now saying, Hey Siri turn on the lights, or change colour to red, blue, green or activate a scene, or dim or turn off is simply a breeze. You don’t need to speak an exact phrase, you can converse fairly naturally. Now obviously, my wife needs to be able to control the lights. So from HomeKit settings, I sent her an invite.

My wife appears, having accepted my invite, with HomeKit now setup on her iPhone and Apple Watch with all the scenes and lights that I had on my setup. So now she could just ask Siri to operate the lights. My wife hates technology. This is probably the first time I have seen her enjoying the experience of adjusting the lights and colour of the lights just by her voice. As the expression goes, it did just work.

I also know that the Apple solution is the better option, since my wife asked if I could install a few more around the house. Also, using your Apple Watch to control your lights is cool IMO.

The problem with HomeKit is lack of devices and services that connect to it, although it does have decent security.

Alexa vs Siri vs Google.

So now we get down to the different platforms and voice control. All three are different and all three work in different ways. Google is better at finding information from the web. Google now has its own Google Home system. Whilst it is early days for Google, it does show some great promise. Alexa needs to be spoken to in a precise manner and links well with Amazon services and a range of third party apps. I am concerned about the lack of security currently with Amazon’s setup. Alexa struggles to recognise my voice quite a bit. Siri is more like a virtual personal assistant that in my world works really well. And now Siri controls my home lightning in a natural way.

As to which system suits you best will depend on what you need it to do and what hardware you own! To have the sleekest home setup you may more than one system.

One thing is certain, and that is the future is going to be fascinating!

Sennheiser HD 598 cs Headphone review – Are these the best headphones made by Sennheiser? Also Sennheiser HD 598 cs vs 598’s

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

Welcome to my review of the Sennheiser HD 598 cs headphone.

The Sennheiser HD 598 cs are not the first pair of Sennheiser headphones that I have reviewed or used. In fact I have reviewed the Sennheiser HD 598 SE, HD 518 and Momentum Wireless 2.0. To recap on these reviews – Click HERE.

I have also owned the amazing HD 600 headphones.

I currently own the Sennheiser HD 598 SE headphones which are on open back version. This means sound leaks, so whatever you are listening to, everyone can dance to your tunes as well. So for commuting on public transport these are not ideal as you can also hear everything going on around you. But at home, in private, these are splendid and provide a massive detailed soundstage.

The Sennheiser HD 598 cs are a closed back design. This means you music stays private. I had not heard of this model until Amazon had it available as a Black Friday special deal of £89.99. It seems Amazon got Sennheiser to make a special version of the HD 598 SE (open back) headphones. Except, after a bit of digging it seems that the HD 598 cs could be the new Sennheiser HD 569 closed back headphones in disguise. In the useful links, at the end of this review, I left a link to the HD 569’s. See what you think. They look really similar and have the same ohm and SPL figures.

But there are more differences between the open back and closed back models. From a physical point of view, they look identical. However, the technical specifications are different. The 598 SE have an impedance of 50 ohms, whereas the 598 cs are 23 ohms. The 598 SE SPL is 112db whereas the 598 cs are 115db. These 2 technical specs mean the 598 cs version are considerably easier to drive from a phone, MP3 player, or any device for that matter and go louder faster and easier.

The open back 598 SE have a wider frequency range at 12 – 38,000 Hz. The 598 Cs are 10 – 28,000 Hz. The closed back version have a more punchier bass than the open back version, but these are not bass heavy headphones. I would classify them as bass perfect headphones at their price point.

So from a physical point of view there are differences. The 598 cs use velvet type ear cushions whereas the open back 598 SE use a velour material for the ear cushions. See photos. Also the headband on the 598 cs seems less cushioned (its not) but it doesn’t have the air suspension cushioning as the 598 SE. Also the 598 SE have the name Sennheiser embedded in the headband.

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

Photo above. 598 cs (closed back on left) and 598 SE (open back on right).

Another small difference is the fact that the 598 cs drivers seem to be slightly angled. Also the ear cups are finished differently. See below.

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

On the bottom is the 598 SE (open) and the speaker grill is perforated to allow the sound to spill out. On top the 598 cs (closed) has a material like finish.

Specs aside, what matters is how these sound. After 100 hours burn in the Sennheiser HD 598 cs absolutely rock. Because they are easier to drive they sound ace straight out of my iPhone 7+ and MacBook. They are so dynamic, engaging and incredibly musical that you just want to listen to every song you ever owned again and again. The 598 cs also rock out with so much ease and have tons of volume from both my iPhone 7 and MacBook.

In case you are interested, the Sennheiser comes with a HD 598Cs headset/ 1.2m cable with 1-button remote/ 3.5mm straight plug; 3m cable/ 6.3mm straight plug. The HD 598 SE have a 1.2m cable with a 3.5mm plug but without the 1 button remote.

In the title I asked “are these the best headphones made by Sennheiser?”. I am going to say yes in the context of most people will love these and more importantly afford them. You don’t need any fancy equipment, amps or dacs. At 23 ohms and with a sound pressure of 115db these are super efficient. Therefore, all you need is your current phone. You then will get the superb Sennheiser sound across the entire sound spectrum, mid, treble and bass. The headphones are not genre dependant either. They just rock with anything and don’t ruin the music.

Looks like I will be needed my Apple Lightning to 3.5m headphone adapter for a while longer!

These are more than recommended, these are probably the first headphone that is a must buy from me so long as you can cope with a wired connection. Even if these cost £150, they would be worth every penny.

Huawei P9 – Epic Photos from the Camera

The Huawei P9 comes with 2 x 12mp rear cameras. One is monochrome and the other is a colour sensor. The cameras were co-engineered with the help of Leica.

In my results below, the Huawei P9 camera delivers epic results and photos worthy of hanging on my wall.

Classic Dartmoor Trees #HuaweiP9

The above shot was taken after sunset, just before night started. This is my favourite shot so far from the P9.

Paignton Beach #HuaweiP9

The above shot is of Paignton Pier, Paignton, Devon.

Apple goes on record to apologise for the calendar spam – here’s how to stop the spam!

Apple has officially acknowledged and apologised for the calendar spam that is affecting iCloud calendars. This problem has affected my wife and many of my friends.

Apple has stated “We are sorry that some of our users are receiving spam calendar invitations. We are actively working to address this issue by identifying and blocking suspicious senders and spam in the invites being sent.” This came via Rene Ritchie of iMore.com. Tweet below.

If you receive a calendar spam entry, there are two methods needed to remove the problem. First if you decline, accept, or choose maybe on an incoming iCloud invite this lets the hackers know that your iCloud email address is valid.

Firstly, log in to iCloud via a web browser. This means going to http://www.icloud.com. Select the Calendar. the calendar settings. This is the cog bottom left. Go to Preferences, then choose Advanced. Choose to receive all event invitations as email. Emails can be more easily ignored and deleted.

Second, on your iPhone or iPad. Open the calendar app. Tap calendars. Now you can create a new Calendar, name it “Spam”. Tap on the offending spam calendar invite and move it to the “Spam” calendar. Once you have moved all the offending entries, you then delete the Spam Calendar entirely. This method does not tip off the spammers and removes the problem until Apple fixes it.

Huawei P9 – Festival Blue Edition – First Impressions

Written in Stone #fullsize #OO #HuaweiP9 #monochrome

I reviewed the Huawei P9 back in May 2016. Click HERE to read my full review.

6 months later Huawei have released the P9 Festival Edition. This is simply either a red or blue finished P9. I really liked the phone when I reviewed it 6 months ago, and now that it is available in 2 new colours, I decided to take the plunge and get the blue colour.

P9 Blue

It is not a vivid or dark blue, more a pale grey type blue. In some lighting it does look more blue, but nonetheless its still stunning.

The first thing to re-adjust to is its cameras. It has 2 x 12mp rear cameras. One monochrome and the other is a colour sensor. The above shot was taken in its monochrome mode. The Huawei P9 also allows RAW shots in its Pro Mode so I shall be having some fun with this phone periodically. The raw image files are around 22mb per photo.

The other reason for getting the P9 is to try the nougat beta along with EMUI v5. Once I have this installed on the P9 I shall report back with my findings.

If you have any questions about the Huawei P9, please ask.

Zecti Camera Tripod – 55 inch Lightweight Aluminium Tripod – My review of this compact & versatile tripod

Zecti Tripod

Zecti is a new small company hoping to make a mark with several of their products, one of which is the Zecti 55 inch Camera Tripod. This is made of lightweight aluminium which retails for a competitive price of £54.99. However, Zecti have offered a £5 discount. See end of post.

I have been using the Zecti tripod for over 2 weeks now and it has impressed me from the moment I unboxed it. For starters, it comes in a protective bag as shown above. The next aspect I have noticed with this tripod is its versatility. It is so much better than my Amazon Basic tripod which is so heavy compared to the Zecti tripod.

Zecti Tripod

The Ball Head

The Ball Head is made of an aluminum alloy material and has a built in bubble level indicator. It works with a 3/8″ screw mount for a tripod and a 1/4″ screw. It has a thread on plate for easy removal of your camera. See photos. The ball head is a 360 degree panoramic head.

Zecti Tripod

The Tripod Options

Zecti Tripod

The tripod comes in a black finish, weighing 1450g. It has a maximum load of 5kg. Its folded length is 350mm. Max Height is 1410mm. It is made from an aluminum alloy.

Zecti Tripod

The inversion of central axis is ideal for macro shooting like insects, flowers, grass and etc.It has a removable quick-release plate, comes with 1/4″ screw, suitable for most of DLSR cameras, a universal ballhead design with 360° dial, allow you to adjust the angle freely and quickly, comes with leg angle adjustment with locking every single leg, has a 4-section column leg, giving a more convenient leg handling, meet your desired shooting height. But just as important it folds to an incredible small compact and light weight design.

In The Box

1 x tripod with ball head
1 x ball head protecting bag
1 x monopod waist pouch
1x hexagonal wrench
1 x user manual
1 x carry bag

In terms of what is included you really can’t ask for anything else. One of the tricks of this tripod is becoming a monopod and really quickly too.

Zecti Tripod

Final Words

I have grown to really enjoy using the Zecti Camera Tripod. It comes in a neat carry bag and its versatility at such a competitive price makes this a win for me. This has replaced my main tripod too.
