The Basics

The BlackBerry DTEK60 is probably the phone all BlackBerry users have dreamed of with a powerhouse of top end specs, decent stereo speakers, a superb QHD 534ppi amoled screen, a headphone jack, excellent headphone audio and bluetooth stereo.

The 3,000 mAh battery reached on average 4.5 hours screen on time. Some days, this was less, sometimes a little bit more than 4.5 hours. Standby time was ok. It did seem to lose more than other phones I have tested whilst in standby mode. Call quality was good.

The viewing angles of the screen were good too along with sunlight visibility. The screen adjusts the contrast and brightness making photo taking a breeze.

It also features BlackBerry’s DTEK security suite, keyboard, launcher and productivity apps including the BlackBerry Hub. There is a lot of nice useful bits of software from BlackBerry.

The BlackBerry launcher is fantastic too. It allows custom icon packs which 100s available on the Google Play Store. On the home screen, swiping up on an app opens up the app widget. The launcher also allows for a wide selection of shortcuts. More details on the video review.

Camera and Audio

Blackberry DTEK60

The DTEK50 has stereo speakers that sound superb and go loud. Lovely clarity and good volume. Brilliant for podcasts, gaming, watching YouTube videos and more. Headphone audio via the 3.5mm headphone jack was better than normal. Bluetooth audio was excellent. The phone has MAXX audio which adds to the whole enjoyment and quality. See video for more details.

Blackberry DTEK60 photos

The camera app is superb to use. I personally really like the camera app. The video below goes through all the options so do check that out. The photo quality is good too. The 21mp rear camera and 8mp front camera take lovely photos.

Video Review

Below is the video section. The video helps compliment the written part to provide more detail around the phone construction, camera app, Blackberry apps and sound quality.

Conclusion

The BlackBerry DTEK60 is an excellent phone. It excels in all areas and in today’s cyber crime environment, has BlackBerry’s commitment to providing fast and regular security updates. Recommended.

Apple AirPods – My Review – The Wire Free Headphone Paradise

AirPods

Welcome to my review of the Apple AirPods.

The AirPods are probably one of the most anticipated products from Apple since it removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Judging by the 6 week waiting time many people are buying these.

I have already experienced Apple’s new W1 chip that is found inside the AirPods with the new Beats Wireless Solo 3 headphones. The W1 chip performs miracles with the connection process, locking on to the audio and then not dropping out any audio ever along with a huge distance possible from the iPhone. So my expectations were really high with the new AirPods.

Setup Process and Configuration Options

Just open the lid of little charging case the AirPods come in, and a message will pop up on your iPhone asking to pair. Tap connect, and voila. The AirPods will get renamed with your name. If you want to give them a different name, though, you can change it at any time via the settings app.

Now the AirPods are paired to your iPhone , via iCloud, the pairing syncs across all your Apple devices. Neat.

AirPods

So now whenever you pull your AirPods out of the charging case, they instantly turn on and connect to your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad or Mac. Audio will automatically play as soon as you put them in your ears and pauses when you take them out. The controls work by using Siri. To adjust the volume, change the song, make a call or to get Siri to do anything else, just double-tap to activate to bring up Siri. You don’t need to say “Hey Siri”, just talk.

Untitled

If you head over to the settings app, tap bluetooth, then look for the Airpods in the list, and tap on the “i” you can now do the following –

– To change the AirPods name, open the settings app from your iPhone’s home screen. Tap on Bluetooth. Tap on the current name of your AirPods under My Devices. Tap on Name. Edit the name.

– By default, double tapping the AirPods activate Siri. Again in the settings you can switch between Siri, Play/Pause, or to disable double tap function. That’s all you can do at the moment in terms of the double tap functionality.

AirPods

In the settings app you can also tell the AirPods which side you would like the mic to work. Normally, both mics are on, but you can just have the left or right side if you desire. I would recommend leaving this setting alone, as the AirPods will decide where the best signal is coming from.

Do they fall out? No they don’t no matter how hard I tried. The AirPods use optical sensors and a motion accelerometer to detect when they’re in your ears and automatically routes the sound and also engages the microphone. And when you’re on a call or talking to Siri, an additional accelerometer works with beam forming microphones to filter out background noise and focus on the sound of your voice.

Battery life is 5 hours of listening time on one charge. The case is a charging case and provides up to 24 hours of charge. A 15 min charge provides 3 hours of listening time.

Audio Quality / In Use Experiences

I have now used the AirPods for 8 hours. The 5 hour battery life is correct. I got 5 hours 15 mins on my first charge. Recharging them in the case was a speedy affair and I did check that the claim of a 15 min charge provides 3 hours of music. Impressive.

The AirPods are more comfortable than the EarPods. I am not sure why, but it might be because they are marginally lighter and sit better in my ears.

The charging case is smaller than I expected, which is great as it will easily fit in any pocket.

The AirPods have a stronger, fuller bass line that the EarPods and sound good with all genres. The mid and treble are average, but certainly not dull or recessed. The soundstage is middle of the road. The AirPods do sound better than the EarPods. The maximum volume is plenty loud enough for me.

At £159, there are headphones that sound better, but there are none that offer all the connectivity, flexibility, size, style and wire free convenience. The AirPods do not drop bluetooth connection and that in itself is remarkable.

I watched a number of YouTube videos and watched a TV programme. The voices were in sync. Walking down a very busy main road, I was still able to double tab and ask Siri a question. I used Siri to raise or lower the volume, skip tracks and more. It is worth noting, Siri can only change tracks with the official music app from Apple. Using Amazon Music or a third party music player app called Neutron, Siri could not skip to the next track.

I also tried the AirPods with my MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. And as if by magic, the AirPods were showing up ready to select. Double tapping to bring up Siri to change tracks using iTunes work fine, albeit it is faster to manually press the next track on the Touch Bar. The AirPods sound superb when connected to the MacBook Pro.

When it comes to noise cancellation, the AirPods have none. You can use just one AirPod. If you take one of the AirPods out of your ears, the music stops. If you then ask Siri to play the music, it will now play through the other AirPod in mono. So if you wanted to listen to a podcast, and just use one AirPod at a time, you could manage 48 hours worth of battery life.

Overall, the entire package is beautiful to behold and a pleasure to use. The music quality is about 7.5/10.

Video Review

In the video below, I try and shake the AirPods out of my ears, unbox and reveal more about these little gems.

Conclusion

A superb product from Apple. Wire free headphones are the future. The future is now. Highly recommended.

Sennheiser HD 598 cs Headphone review – Are these the best headphones made by Sennheiser? Also Sennheiser HD 598 cs vs 598’s

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

Welcome to my review of the Sennheiser HD 598 cs headphone.

The Sennheiser HD 598 cs are not the first pair of Sennheiser headphones that I have reviewed or used. In fact I have reviewed the Sennheiser HD 598 SE, HD 518 and Momentum Wireless 2.0. To recap on these reviews – Click HERE.

I have also owned the amazing HD 600 headphones.

I currently own the Sennheiser HD 598 SE headphones which are on open back version. This means sound leaks, so whatever you are listening to, everyone can dance to your tunes as well. So for commuting on public transport these are not ideal as you can also hear everything going on around you. But at home, in private, these are splendid and provide a massive detailed soundstage.

The Sennheiser HD 598 cs are a closed back design. This means you music stays private. I had not heard of this model until Amazon had it available as a Black Friday special deal of £89.99. It seems Amazon got Sennheiser to make a special version of the HD 598 SE (open back) headphones. Except, after a bit of digging it seems that the HD 598 cs could be the new Sennheiser HD 569 closed back headphones in disguise. In the useful links, at the end of this review, I left a link to the HD 569’s. See what you think. They look really similar and have the same ohm and SPL figures.

But there are more differences between the open back and closed back models. From a physical point of view, they look identical. However, the technical specifications are different. The 598 SE have an impedance of 50 ohms, whereas the 598 cs are 23 ohms. The 598 SE SPL is 112db whereas the 598 cs are 115db. These 2 technical specs mean the 598 cs version are considerably easier to drive from a phone, MP3 player, or any device for that matter and go louder faster and easier.

The open back 598 SE have a wider frequency range at 12 – 38,000 Hz. The 598 Cs are 10 – 28,000 Hz. The closed back version have a more punchier bass than the open back version, but these are not bass heavy headphones. I would classify them as bass perfect headphones at their price point.

So from a physical point of view there are differences. The 598 cs use velvet type ear cushions whereas the open back 598 SE use a velour material for the ear cushions. See photos. Also the headband on the 598 cs seems less cushioned (its not) but it doesn’t have the air suspension cushioning as the 598 SE. Also the 598 SE have the name Sennheiser embedded in the headband.

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

Photo above. 598 cs (closed back on left) and 598 SE (open back on right).

Another small difference is the fact that the 598 cs drivers seem to be slightly angled. Also the ear cups are finished differently. See below.

Sennheiser HD598 cs vs 598 SE

On the bottom is the 598 SE (open) and the speaker grill is perforated to allow the sound to spill out. On top the 598 cs (closed) has a material like finish.

Specs aside, what matters is how these sound. After 100 hours burn in the Sennheiser HD 598 cs absolutely rock. Because they are easier to drive they sound ace straight out of my iPhone 7+ and MacBook. They are so dynamic, engaging and incredibly musical that you just want to listen to every song you ever owned again and again. The 598 cs also rock out with so much ease and have tons of volume from both my iPhone 7 and MacBook.

In case you are interested, the Sennheiser comes with a HD 598Cs headset/ 1.2m cable with 1-button remote/ 3.5mm straight plug; 3m cable/ 6.3mm straight plug. The HD 598 SE have a 1.2m cable with a 3.5mm plug but without the 1 button remote.

In the title I asked “are these the best headphones made by Sennheiser?”. I am going to say yes in the context of most people will love these and more importantly afford them. You don’t need any fancy equipment, amps or dacs. At 23 ohms and with a sound pressure of 115db these are super efficient. Therefore, all you need is your current phone. You then will get the superb Sennheiser sound across the entire sound spectrum, mid, treble and bass. The headphones are not genre dependant either. They just rock with anything and don’t ruin the music.

Looks like I will be needed my Apple Lightning to 3.5m headphone adapter for a while longer!

These are more than recommended, these are probably the first headphone that is a must buy from me so long as you can cope with a wired connection. Even if these cost £150, they would be worth every penny.

Huawei P9 – Epic Photos from the Camera

The Huawei P9 comes with 2 x 12mp rear cameras. One is monochrome and the other is a colour sensor. The cameras were co-engineered with the help of Leica.

In my results below, the Huawei P9 camera delivers epic results and photos worthy of hanging on my wall.

Classic Dartmoor Trees #HuaweiP9

The above shot was taken after sunset, just before night started. This is my favourite shot so far from the P9.

Paignton Beach #HuaweiP9

The above shot is of Paignton Pier, Paignton, Devon.

Using the monochrome mode on the P9 adds mood and a unique feel to photos. This is Paignton beach, complete with sea fog in the distance.

Just trees. Just gorgeous.

No doubt as I get to use the phone’s camera more and more, I will be able to extract even more stunning photos.

Huawei P9 – Festival Blue Edition – First Impressions

Written in Stone #fullsize #OO #HuaweiP9 #monochrome

I reviewed the Huawei P9 back in May 2016. Click HERE to read my full review.

6 months later Huawei have released the P9 Festival Edition. This is simply either a red or blue finished P9. I really liked the phone when I reviewed it 6 months ago, and now that it is available in 2 new colours, I decided to take the plunge and get the blue colour.

P9 Blue

It is not a vivid or dark blue, more a pale grey type blue. In some lighting it does look more blue, but nonetheless its still stunning.

The first thing to re-adjust to is its cameras. It has 2 x 12mp rear cameras. One monochrome and the other is a colour sensor. The above shot was taken in its monochrome mode. The Huawei P9 also allows RAW shots in its Pro Mode so I shall be having some fun with this phone periodically. The raw image files are around 22mb per photo.

The other reason for getting the P9 is to try the nougat beta along with EMUI v5. Once I have this installed on the P9 I shall report back with my findings.

If you have any questions about the Huawei P9, please ask.

Zecti Camera Tripod – 55 inch Lightweight Aluminium Tripod – My review of this compact & versatile tripod

Zecti Tripod

Zecti is a new small company hoping to make a mark with several of their products, one of which is the Zecti 55 inch Camera Tripod. This is made of lightweight aluminium which retails for a competitive price of £54.99. However, Zecti have offered a £5 discount. See end of post.

I have been using the Zecti tripod for over 2 weeks now and it has impressed me from the moment I unboxed it. For starters, it comes in a protective bag as shown above. The next aspect I have noticed with this tripod is its versatility. It is so much better than my Amazon Basic tripod which is so heavy compared to the Zecti tripod.

Zecti Tripod

The Ball Head

The Ball Head is made of an aluminum alloy material and has a built in bubble level indicator. It works with a 3/8″ screw mount for a tripod and a 1/4″ screw. It has a thread on plate for easy removal of your camera. See photos. The ball head is a 360 degree panoramic head.

Zecti Tripod

The Tripod Options

Zecti Tripod

The tripod comes in a black finish, weighing 1450g. It has a maximum load of 5kg. Its folded length is 350mm. Max Height is 1410mm. It is made from an aluminum alloy.

Zecti Tripod

The inversion of central axis is ideal for macro shooting like insects, flowers, grass and etc.It has a removable quick-release plate, comes with 1/4″ screw, suitable for most of DLSR cameras, a universal ballhead design with 360° dial, allow you to adjust the angle freely and quickly, comes with leg angle adjustment with locking every single leg, has a 4-section column leg, giving a more convenient leg handling, meet your desired shooting height. But just as important it folds to an incredible small compact and light weight design.

In The Box

1 x tripod with ball head
1 x ball head protecting bag
1 x monopod waist pouch
1x hexagonal wrench
1 x user manual
1 x carry bag

In terms of what is included you really can’t ask for anything else. One of the tricks of this tripod is becoming a monopod and really quickly too.

Zecti Tripod

Final Words

I have grown to really enjoy using the Zecti Camera Tripod. It comes in a neat carry bag and its versatility at such a competitive price makes this a win for me. This has replaced my main tripod too.

Amazon Echo Dot – The Highs & Lows of Amazon’s Little Connected Miracle

Echo Dot<

Amazon had their Echo Dot on a Bank Holiday offer which took £10 off the price, making it £39.99. The offer is still valid today on Cyber Monday, so if you want one, click the link below in the useful links section at the end of the article.

There is not much to the Amazon Echo Dot. In the box is the Echo Dot itself, a micro USB cable that plugs into the UK adapter. A few mini booklets are provided. All you have to do is download the Amazon Alexa app, plug the Echo Dot in to the power socket, sign in via the app and it takes your wifi credentials and sets itself up.

You can now say things like, Alexa will it rain tomorrow. Or will it rain on Wednesday, and stuff like that. If you want the Echo Dot powered by a voice spoken assistant called Alexa, you can add more features, called skills. The USA has over 3,000 skills. The UK is somewhat behind that number, but it has only recently been launched in the UK.

So what can the Echo Dot do now –

– Amazon Echo Dot is a hands-free, voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music, control smart home devices, provide information, read the news, set alarms and more
– Connects to speakers or headphones through Bluetooth or 3.5 mm stereo cable to play music from Amazon Music, Spotify and TuneIn
– Controls lights, switches, thermostats and more with compatible connected devices from WeMo, Philips Hue, Hive, Netatmo, Nest, tado° and others
– Hears you from across the room with 7 microphones for far-field hands-free voice control, even in noisy environments or while playing music
– Includes a built-in speaker so it can work on its own as a smart alarm clock in the bedroom, an assistant in the kitchen, or anywhere you might want a voice-controlled device
– Always getting smarter – Alexa updates through the cloud automatically and is continually learning, adding new features and skills

So in no particular order these are the lows and highs, starting with the lows first –

– sometimes it did not understand my voice/accent.
– you have to remember to start every sentence with Alexa. It is not aware of context and any commands have to be spoken precisely as it has been programmed
– my Belkin Wemo Smart Lights did not work with the Echo Dot without adding a skill (or service) from Konomi. Once added I could say things like “Alexa, lights on”. This was all working perfectly, and then none of the voice commands worked. I got this working again, only for it to fail again
– Be careful with compatibility. I though Wemo products were supported by the Echo Dot. Turns out it is only certain WeMo products and not my smart lights. (in hindsight it would have made more sense 2 years ago to spend the extra and buy Philips Hue lights)

And now for the highs –

– setup was a breeze
– I really like the small size of the Echo Dot. It is small enough to not disturb the look of any room. The microphones work really well.
– despite the issues with Belkin WeMo Smart light bulbs, this is the only product that has been able to connect to these and allow operation by voice
– Amazon’s Echo and Echo Dot has vastly more connectivity services than Apple’s HomeKit.
– The speaker on the Echo Dot is much louder than I expected and sat on a solid wooden shelf delivers a lot of punch for its size
– With Prime Music (the free option) I can play music from most genres
– If the sound is not loud enough, connecting to a bigger speaker is easy.
– Its early days but the amount of stuff and services the Echo can connect to is vast

The big plus is it doesn’t need voice training. That means my wife can turn the lights on, off or dim them using her voice. Early days but so far, its great fun and impressive little piece of kit.

MacBook Pro with Touch Bar – Day 2 – Battery and More Experiences

MacBook Pro 1

Day 2 with the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. Don’t forget to check out yesterday’s first experiences.

So after a full day, I am still enjoying my MacBook Pro. I have found a few more instances where I am using the Touch Bar too.

So firstly the first full charge and near discharge of battery only produced 8 hours usage. Apple claim 10 hours. I can never see this being reached. To achieve my 8 hours battery life, I had bluetooth, wifi and location services left on. 4 email accounts were active using the mail app. Tweetbot for Mac was streaming in the background. For 60 mins I was streaming a TV show to the Apple TV directly from the MacBook Pro. Other activities including watching some YouTube videos and typing a few bits and pieces, as well as browsing the internet using Safari.

The enhanced colour gamut retina screen is beautiful. Anything and everything you do on it looks great. Listening to any sound is superb via the in built speakers. I have had one instance when the sound wouldn’t play through the inbuilt speakers so I had to soft reset the machine to fix the problem. Bluetooth music audio is truly excellent.

I deliberately subscribed to iTunes Match to ensure my 100gb of music sitting on my old MacBook would be available on any Apple device. This also meant I did not have to worry about transferring data using cables between the old and new devices. Nor would I need a dongle or adapter. I also paid for a higher storage limit with Apple, along with iCloud Photos. With iCloud Drive switched on, all my documents appeared on my new mac. With iCloud Photos and iTunes Match I now have all my music and photos on my new device. To get all my music stored locally as well as the iCloud, I just created a new playlist for all my music and downloaded this playlist, which would make iTunes Match to download every song to the new machine. This was completed overnight.

I have deliberately wanted to try and use all the Apple services and hardware to try and experience the Apple Eco system in full. iCloud seems to work really well, but with more usage and testing I am sure I might found some bugs.

The power and speed of the new MacBook is incredible. Go to the applications page, select all the apps, then do command O. (O is for Open). This will open every app on the MacBook. It will do this really fast.

And now to the Touch Bar. I am not going out of my way to use it all all, but it definitely improves the flow for some tasks. I haven’t found it essential yet, but like having Touch ID, it is a pleasant extra to have available. Scrubbing through YouTube videos using the Touch Bar works really smoothly. Having menu shortcuts on the Touch Bar do bring to life shortcuts that I didn’t know existed.

I haven’t really found any negatives yet. It really is a positive experience, albeit an expensive one. In time as I use it more, I will see whether I believe it represents good value for money. However, the reality is this. If you want a new MacBook Pro, either buy one or don’t. These are your only choices!
