Is HTC ditching the Ultrapixel from its flagship phones?

2 nights ago HTC launched 2 new pieces of hardware. The standalone RE camera and the Desire Eye. The Desire Eye had a 13mp front and back along with true tone flash units on the front and back.

HTC also released quietly a new version in China of the HTC One M8, the One M8 Eye. You guessed a One M8 without the 4mp Ultrapixel, but simply a 13mp lens. However, unlike the Desire Eye it did not feature an upgrade to the front camera.

I must admit, the Desire Eye looks like a good piece of kit.

HTC launches the Re and Desire Eye along with new software for iOS and android phones

HTC held a press event last night and revealed 2 new pieces of hardware, the Desire Eye and RE camera. Then they announced that the RE camera software would work on android and iOS devices. That was after telling the audience HTC’s Zoe app was out of beta and available on the Google Play store and downloadable by all phones not just HTC handsets. And the iOS version was due out soon!

So the HTC Desire Eye is a 5.2-inch smartphone similar to One M8 specs except it’s in a flat polycarbonate body, a 13-megapixel camera front and back with decent dual tone flash on both sides. It is also water resistant with boomsound and advanced noise reduction.

The HTC RE camera, looks like a periscope miniaturised or an inhaler is a handheld camera with a 16-megapixel Sony DSC sensor and a 146-degree field of view. It then connects to Android or iOS phones via a dedicated app. It can of course shoot on its own.

The main aspect of HTC’s event is the fact it was opening up its software to iPhones and all android phones. Maybe HTC is trying to create a photo social network and of course raise its brand awareness. Whatever it’s long term plans, it’s good to see the company to start to think outside of the box, and away from just selling hardware.

So what did you think about the event, new software path and the Re camera and Desire Eye?

Samsung issues profits warning for Q3 2014 – down by 60% – details

Samsung has issued its guidance for the third quarter of the 2014 fiscal year and warns that there may be a steep drop in profits from a year ago and from the previous quarter. With the guidance, this would be the fourth consecutive quarter that Samsung’s profits are slumping. Operating profit might drop by as much as 60 percent.

Samsung says that it expects to make 4.1 trillion won, or $3.8 billion, in operating profit for the quarter ended September 30, roughly a 60 percent decline from the same quarter a year ago of 10.2 trillion. Similarly, sales were also down, coming in at 47 trillion won, or 20 percent less than a year ago.

Samsung says that though smartphone sales were slightly up, profits were hurt by increased marketing costs and lower prices.

Let’s hope devices like the Alpha and Note 4 help pull back its profits.

Samsung Note 4 – how will iPhone 6 Plus impact sales

Apple just can’t sell enough iPhone 6 Plus phones. So will there be any people left to buy the new Note 4?

I imagine they will be plenty but maybe not as much as expected or as per the Note 3.

But let’s say Samsung have a good return for the Note 4, add that to Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales, where does that leave everybody else?

I predict more phone manufacturers being casualties of this roller coaster success of Apple and potentially Samsung. Or maybe Samsung gets knocked off its perch by somebody else!

Pebble Smartwatches just got an significant update and price drop

Pebble has lowered its Smartwatches with the original down to $99 and the steel to $199.

In addition, following a software update, Pebble is capable of tracking activity and monitoring sleep in the background. Jawbone, Misfit, and Swim.com have all released apps that can tap into this functionality.

This is good news for Pebble fans and in my opinion a worthy update too.

Everyone loves using the iPhone even if they pretend not too

Don’t you love it when famous people are paid to promote another phone manufacturer like Samsung, LG or others and then you look at their tweets and the information reveals “Twitter for iPhone”.

So the latest culprit was LG who jumped on the nonsensical bendgate with a tweet that their LG G Flex was made to bend, but was tweeted on an iPhone.

Ironic!
