Apple launches CareKit for iOS – full details

Apple has launches its 3rd medical framework called CareKit.

CareKit allows users to collect medical data that can be shared with physicians and other carers to provide an accurate log of symptoms and signs to assist with diagnosis and treatment.

Four CareKit apps are now available –

– Glow Nurture is a pregnancy tracker that allows an expectant mother to log progress and obtain information on what to expect when. The app is free, but a subscription is required to unlock full functionality.

– Glow Baby takes over from Nurture when the baby is born, tracking everything from feed schedules to growth charts, and is likewise a freemium app.

– One Drop is a diabetes management app that provides one-touch logging of glucose, food, meds and activity. It also syncs data from Bluetooth-enabled handheld blood glucose monitors, and provides reminders when meds are due. It’s a free app, with Apple Watch support.

– Start is a depression-management app which provides testing and progress-tracking to help determine the effectiveness of meds. It also provides meds reminders and side-effect logging. The app is free.

CareKit also integrates with hospital records systems like Epic and Cerner.

What Apple is doing with CareKit framework is truly excellent and currently leaves iOS in a class of its own when it comes to this area of integration onto a mobile operating system.

Twitter is no longer a Social Media app – details

Twitter has changed.

Previously it was listed on the Apple App Store as a social media application. This is no longer the case.

It has now listed itself as a news application. Now whilst I am not sure it will lose its social media status, I do agree it is a good source for breaking news.

Whether its a tweet from a friend who has just tweeted their dinner or tweets from around the world about a subject or live events, these bits of information are all news in one form or another.

I just hope Twitter does not try and ruin its own app even further and destroy what it has built up over the years.

Fenix and Twitter reach a solution – details

A few days ago, I reported that the best third party Twitter app on android (my view) had reached its 100,000 token limit and had to be pulled from the Google Play store.

This seemed like a nightmare scenario.

However, good news is to be reported. The developer of Fenix and Twitter have reached some form of private agreement and Fenix has returned.

This is a new direction for Twitter supporting a developer. Lets hope Twitter look to support other developers going forward.

Fenix – One of the Best Android Twitter apps has reached its token limit

Via Fenix –

https://twitter.com/fenix_app/status/724117610275721216

It is a sad day for another brilliant twitter app, Fenix. For me this twitter app is as good as Tweetbot on iOS.

Twitter has implemented rules that prevent new Twitter apps having more than 100,000 users/tokens. Only a few older apps have a higher limit, normally 200,000. Fenix has reached the 100,000 limit meaning nobody else can download and login to Twitter via the app. Consequently, the developer of Fenix has now removed the app from the Google Play Store.

So are there any options? The developer can ask Twitter for extra tokens, although Twitter is unlikely to comply. The developer can create a new Twitter app which everyone will have to buy again. But the biggest worry now is what incentive does the developer of Fenix have to carry on updating his app.

Lets hope a solution can be found.

IFTTT has a new channel – LG Smartphone – Details – Updated

This made me stop for a minute. The IFTTT now has a new channel called LG Smartphone. If you have the new LG G5 or LG V10 you now have a new channel for recipes using one of these 2 LG smartphones.

IFTTT state “Get more out of the LG V10 and G5 by connecting your smartphone to hundreds of apps and devices.”

So for example you can create a recipe with IFTTT that when you enter a specific location, NFC gets switched on.

Apple iPad Pro 9.7 inch or the new Amazon Flagship Kindle?

Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos tweeted that next week Amazon is going to release an “all-new, top of the line” Kindle.

Which begs the question, should you go for an e-reader just to read books or should you buy a more versatile device like the Apple iPad Pro 9.7 inch and install the Kindle app?

Personally, if I read lots of books are didn’t want too much eye strain, I would opt for one of the cheaper Amazon Kindle readers. This way when I read, I wouldn’t get any distractions.

However, I still think nothing beats reading a real book.

At Long Last – Android Pay is coming to the UK – details

The Telegraph has reported that Android Pay, Google’s equivalent payment system to Apple Pay, has got the green light and is going live in the UK later this month.

Android Pay will start to accelerate mobile payments from smartphones and remove Apple’s exclusivity with its Apple Pay. Samsung has also stated that its own mobile payments version is to launch in the UK sometime in 2016.

The whole idea of a mobile payment system is simplicity but it looks like everyone will want a slice of the action, so expect more companies to start to want to offer their own take on mobile payments.

Now if you have an android phone, you will need Android 4.3 as a minimum and NFC. Sadly NFC is excluded from many Chinese phones (not all) so it is worth checking if you have the minimum requirements. If you think you won’t be interested in using your phone to pay for goods, you will find this true at first. But 6 months later after using Apple Pay as often as possible, there is no way I would buy a phone that couldn’t support a mobile payment system.

HTC starts releasing information on the HTC One M10

HTC choose this year not to announce its new flagship at MWC and instead will hold a separate event next month.

However, not to be left out of the game, HTC started to tease details of its new flagship, the HTC One M10.

So it looks like the M10 has chamfered edges and comes in a metallic body. I must admit, after the lacklustre One M9, I really hope the One M10 brings HTC back into the game.

Is this for real? Vivo Xplay 5 – 6gb ram, Solar Power & Snapdragon 820!! – Updated with photos

vivo

Vivo is a Chinese brand that is rising up the ranks in its homeland. It does not sell to other countries, but this might change. It is also a brand I have been watching over the last few years as from a hardware point of view, they have released some interesting devices.

And now it seems its about to go wild with the Vivo Xplay 5. This is rumoured to have a whopping 6gb ram, a Snapdragon 820 processor and a QHD screen.

Other features include dual curved QHD screens, a decent 4,300mAh battery, 16mp rear, 8mp front camera, an enhanced audio engine and it will be able to be recharged by solar power. If you’re lucky it might even cook you breakfast!

Sceptical? Well I am. Fret not, all will be revealed on 1st March 2016.

Update – some photos have been revealed on the new phone –
