The M7 co-processor in the iPhone 5S is genius

Not much has been revealed of the true potential of the M7 processor that resides inside the iPhone 5S.

But if you want an idea install Argus a free app. Link to AppStore.

Quickly sign up and as if by magic up to your last 7 days steps are shown in the app. The M7 processor stores your data for up to 7 days.

And the other aspect. It uses no battery.

Here’s a look at a few days from my activity.

And if we look at a specific day it show a the time of activity too.

All you now need is a little something on your wrist. Maybe an iWatch.

And after Google Maps comes Google Search on iOS 7

So, what app on iOS 7 from Google could also be better than the equivalent on android. Yep, its Google Search which just got an update to receive notifications for Google Now.

The timing of this update is uncanny, as I was thinking the other day how useful it would be if Google Search had notifications for Google Now.

Again, using the banner system and badge count will make this app more in your face with information you need.

It is not a big change, but it is one that will make the app slick. So do you agree?

Google Maps is better on iOS 7 than android – false or true?

I have been using iOS 7 for a week nearly on a iPhone 5S, and it has rather surprised me. Prior to iOS 7, using Google services and apps on an iPhone was rather painful, but now sign in to Google+ and the other Google apps can sign in automatically too.

But one app that I used a lot on an android phone was Google Maps. And I hate to admit this, but on iOS 7 it works better.

Why?

Simply, the way iOS 7 does notifications, if you are in another app with Google Maps running in turn by turn navigation mode, not only does the phone speak the next turn, but it displays a large enough banner at the top of the screen with the written instructions too. This makes it really useful to use and a feature that is missing on android.

Sometimes, you wonder which operating system is more important to Google.

The secrets of iOS 7 and the iPhone 5S

iOS 7 to most appears to be a brighter and lighter face lift over iOS 6.

But actually it is a lot more. Apart from its 64 bit architecture support and the A7 and M7 chips inside the iPhone 5S, there are still approximately 100 new API’s under a non disclosure agreement that having been made public, even to developers.

The M7 coprocessor manages the sensors and does this without using the full power of the A7 processor. So what is Apple keeping secret from everyone with iOS 7 and these processors?

1. Game Controllers – expect to read and see more of this. This will be a game changer, excuse the pun. Playing games with a game controller creates a whole new experience. It will also be the death of the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP Vita.

2. Sport accessories – expect to see more sport related accessories and apps

3. iWatch – hidden APi’s to reveal the extra functionality

4. Cross device syncing instantaneously

5. New hardware support for future devices.

So what else do you think will arrive?

Further iPhone 5S views

The iPhone 5S running iOS 7 has been in use for a few days. It is a really slick piece of kit, partly due to iOS 7 and partly due to its hardware.

In no particular order, the Apple way is simple. If you have a contact listed in your address book, it is simple to do a FaceTime Audio or Video call. There is no setting up, no different app to find, it is just one app and works. If for example you call somebody where reception is dreadful but the iPhone is connected to wifi, then FaceTime Audio is a superb way of calling that person without fear of signal loss.

The integration of iMessages into the Message app in another simple solution. You don’t have to decide which way to send a text message, the phone decides for you. And it lets you know simply by the change in text colour. Blue for an iMessage and green for a SMS text.

Photo sharing and backup to your mac is also idiot proof. Photostream backs up your last 1,000 photos, and then on your mac in iPhoto each month has its own event with photos saved to it whilst your iPhone is on wifi. Create shared photostream albums and as soon as you add a new photo, the other person or people you are sharing the photo album with will receive that photo. A great way for friends and grandparents etc to share with ease. And the camera has one of the best auto modes on a phone. Simple but effective. I just wish it did a 16:9 resolution to match the phone’s wide screen.

Siri is out of beta and it shows. More refined and useful, like a personal assistant. Apple Maps is vastly improved but is still 3 seconds late on turn by turn navigation versus the map. But now background sync and multitasking is implemented into iOS 7, Google Maps works just fine even with turn by turn. And that is the story with iOS 7. Background sync and multitasking makes everything work really well.

And then there is control centre swiping from the bottom up. This is much better than swiping from the top down. And this is another example of simplicity and something done correctly.

Flow and experience. I do not understand what it is, but when you use an iPhone it provides a satisfying experience. Scrolling is ultra smooth too.

Some of your might say Apple is too controlling in its eco system. So what. Do you really think Google or Microsoft is really any different. In fact, all the eco systems are being tightened up and slowly closed.

But, the iPhone is not for everyone. Watching films on a 6 inch screen is a lot easier than a 4 inch screen as are other tasks. That is why the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be ideal for some people for different reasons. It is also a bespoke and well thought out device.

And ironically but the iPhone and Note 3 cost an arm and a leg, yet are the best in their class.

Quick Views on the iPhone 5S

The new iPhone 5S has had many comments that it is more of the same. It has had comments that it has hardly been improved over the 5. Actually, the iPhone 5 was a great phone and the improvements to the 5S are actually more substantial than meets the eye.

Lets take the camera. It has more camera modes and can process 10 full resolution burst shots per second. In fact you can take 100 photos, and the new A7 processor in real time is able to tell you which one is the best shot or sequence of motion shots to keep. The panoramic mode can now adjust light exposure as you take your shot as shown below.

The 5S boasts better low light. Here is a shot from the 5S and below that the same shot but using the Sony QX10 attached to the iPhone 5S.

and now same scene but using the Sony QX10 lens.

So which low light photo do you prefer?

Obviously there is a lot more features and benefits with the iPhone 5S and I will try and cover these off with some more thoughts over the next few days.

IPhone 5S impressions

image

So on Friday I ended up queuing to buy my wife a 5S to replace her ageing 3GS. Her 3gs would not get iOS 7 so she felt it was time to update. She was all geared up for the gold 5S. Alas by the time Apple got to me in the queue only space grey or silver was available. I got 2 tickets. One for the pink 5C and one for a silver 5S. However, even though the 5C looks nicer the pink was a unpleasant salmon pink. So silver it was.

So I have used my wife’s iPhone 5S for 3 days. The last time I had an iPhone was with the 5 back in March before I sold it for the HTC One. Regular readers will know that I have a Sony Xperia Z1.

So on paper the 5S is a 5 with a few extra bits and labelled a 5S and with iOS 7. First up what a shock that was seeing a totally different look. In fact it has taken nearly 2 days to get to grips with the new look.

The 5S screen feels small. Every time I hold the Z1 it just oozes appeal in its screen size and hardware. Shame Sony didn’t spend the time making sure it released its flagship with a camera that could take photos correctly.

And here’s the reality. Yes the 5S has a small screen compared to its competition. But it’s the most powerful and pocketable device out there. It is also extremely comfortable to hold and use in one hand. It is faster to enter text than the Z1 or even my nexus 4. The keyboard is so fast and it’s auto correction is fantastic.

The new features in iOS 7 make a big difference. Background syncing is so overdue. The control centre, spotlight search and notification centre is so well implemented. Apps are far more polished and often slightly more feature rich. What iOS lacks is the full sharing capability of its android phone counterparts. I like seeing badges on my apps. I know at a glance what has activities.

The 5S finger print scanner just works. The improved camera makes the 8mp camera probably the best and easiest to use. It’s auto mode just gets a great shot most times without any effort. Slo Mo mode on video is hilarious. No idea what the improved A7 processor and co processor M7 does for the phone but it’s super smooth and fast with no slow downs. The camera is very fast at taking shots which is where the processor is making a difference.

My Sony QX10 which was meant to be used with the Z1 also works really well with the 5S. And strangely it looks like Sony designed it with the iPhone in mind.

So my summary views on the 5S. It is probably the most polished phone with the best hardware and software integration. Everything just works. But to get the most you need to use Apple’s own services and Eco system. I’m not saying you can’t use Google or a combo of both but more and more if you commit to using the Apple Eco system you will get more from the phone.

The phone is so perfect it sometimes feels mundane. But my wife is happy. She is not a tech person. The phone just works and that is what most people want.

Final Thoughts on the cameras of the Sony Xperia Z1 vs iPhone 5S

Over the last few days, and maybe a few days before that I have uploaded camera samples from both the above phones. They are totally different animals, but here are my thoughts. The good news with both of these phones is that they can both be used with the quirky Sony QX10 hub lens.

Sony Xperia Z1 –

This is a newly released phone for Sony. It has software bugs. The phone has rebooted for no apparent reason about once a day and the camera frozen once too. The photos are focused in the centre of a shot, but out of focus around the edges. Bright days, the photos seems over processed. Low light can be dreadful. It just depends on the type of low light. However, the camera options are extensive. 61 shots in a second and 20.7mp photos too. I am keeping the Z1 because I really like it and I reckon after at least 2 software updates from Sony will be once amazing phone and camera. That probably will take 3 months at a guess. Panoramic photos seem to be low resolution affairs. I don’t understand why that it. I also believe if Sony had included Optical Image Stabilisation, this phone would be unbeatable in the camera department. The photos I have taken show incredible depth as well.

iPhone 5S –

Less is more is the moto here. High quality shots every time practically with no effort. It is just auto mode. Apple offer a square box option and very high quality panoramic photos. The photos show more natural colours too. I have taken some amazing photos of my dogs. There are other options, but not that many. I would call the 5S camera gimmick free just fast quality photos. Currently, in terms of quality I would pip the 5S ahead of the Z1. But I am keeping both phones, so will revisit the camera test as Sony updates the firmware.

In summary, don’t buy the Z1 for its camera

Mega Camera shootout – iPhone 5S vs Sony Xperia Z1 – share you view on the better phone!

Apple has just released the iPhone 5S with its improved A7 processor and updated camera 8mp. Meanwhile Sony has also recently released its bad boy Sony Xperia Z1, with a huge 20.7mp camera.

They do say size isn’t everything, but how will this pan out in real life tests. Below are 3 sample shots from both cameras. To view the full resolution versions along with all the exif data, additional photos for comparison, go to my special Flickr set http://www.flickr.com/photos/gavinfabl100/sets/72157635718285964/ .

First up you will notice that the iPhone 5S does not shoot in widescreen 16:9, rather 4:3. The Z1 in superior auto mode shoots in 16:9 and in manual 20.7mp settings is also 4:3. Again, study the photos here and on my Flickr set. And decide which is best. Tomorrow, I will give you my opinions on the 2 phones.
