Mimi announces partnerships with leading global audio players at IFA 2019 expanding its sound personalization standard to the wider audio industry.

Panasonic, Qualcomm, Cadence-Tensilica and DSP Group join beyerdynamic and Bragi as part of Mimi Hearing Technologies’ partnership network.

New SDK and hearing test unveiled at the show.

Berlin, Germany, September 4, 2019: World leaders in hearing-based sound personalization and digital hearing tests, Mimi Hearing Technologies, is set to reveal ground-breaking innovations to tackle the rising challenges of hearing UX in entertainment and interaction, an array of new partnerships, and a new SDK at IFA 2019 (Berlin, September 6-11).

In a world where we all hear differently and 55 % of the adult population has some type of hearing loss, it still goes unrecognized and untreated for the vast majority of the population. And while wearing glasses and contact lenses is the common way to deal with vision problems, hearing difficulties are not equally addressed. This is one of the reasons why Mimi is actively tackling this problem, by providing a technology that knows how people hear and that personalizes the audio to the user’s unique hearing ability in all the places we listen.

Philipp Skribanowitz, CEO of Mimi Hearing Technologies, said: “Through our newly expanded network of global partners, we look forward to showcasing the work we’ve been doing to make Mimi Hearing Technologies the world leader in hearing-based sound personalization and digital hearing tests. With problems associated with hearing prevalent across all demographics, people want to enjoy every moment of whatever they are listening to, making a personalized listening experience tailored to their unique hearing ability more relevant than ever before.

Mimi has analyzed over 1.5 million individual Hearing ID profiles from the Mimi Hearing Test app since 2014 in order to refine the sound personalization process, and our upcoming cross vertical expansion of our already far reaching partnership program will allow us to bring a personalized listening experience to all situations in which people listen”.

This expanded list of new partnerships – which will allow Mimi to establish its standard of hearing-based sound personalization and hearing health throughout the wider consumer electronic industry – includes:

Panasonic:Mimi will bring its industry-leading intelligent audio technology solution into airline cabins as part of Panasonic Avionics’ inflight wellness suite. This marks Mimi’s first expansion into aerospace, with its sound processing solutions being made available to millions of passengers using Panasonic Avionics’ inflight entertainment and communication systems.

Qualcomm: Working through the Qualcomm’s eXtension program, Mimi Hearing Technologies will be integrated with Qualcomm’s existing audio platforms. Once headphone users have created their unique Hearing ID through the Mimi Hearing Test app, they will be able to personalize their audio with Mimi’s audio processing software solutions.

Cadence-Tensilica: A global leader in customizable dataplane processor IP cores, which will enable Mimi to integrate its patented audio personalization technology into Cadence® Tensilica® HiFi digital signal processing (DSP) family for audio and voice. Through the collaboration, users now have access to a personalized listening experience that’s based on a listener’s unique hearing profile.

DSP Group: A leading provider of wireless chipset solutions designed to improve voice intelligibility on mobile, consumer and enterprise devices, this partnership will allow Mimi’s personalization technology to perfect the audio quality for consumer and business phone users.

These partnerships build on a sustained period of growth for Mimi Hearing Technologies following its recent IP acquisitions of three sound personalization companies; 3D Sound Labs, Symphonic and SolidSound. Mimi was also honored with the CES Innovation Award for the second year in a row, and secured successful partnerships with wireless headphones producer beyerdynamic, Bragi and electronics manufacturer Loewe to deliver Mimi’s sound personalization solution to consumers worldwide.

Mimi is the world’s leading provider of hearing-based audio optimization. Because we all hear differently Mimi’s team of in-house hearing scientists developed its biologically-inspired and proprietary audio processing technology, that knows how well a user hears in order to optimize their listening experience. It is based on years of research and informed by the results of over 1.5 million Mimi Hearing tests. Along with its award-winning technology, Mimi can also claim to have created the world’s largest database of digital hearing profiles. Mimi can be easily integrated into consumer electronics devices, such as headphones, smartphones, TVs, in-flight entertainment systems and a range of systems and platforms.

Mimi Hearing Technologies’ products and integrations have won numerous prestigious international awards, including the CES Innovation Award in Las Vegas (2019 & 2018) for sound personalization in beyerdynamic headphones, the SATVISION Innovation Prize (2018) for sound optimization in Loewe TVs, the Sonar+D Award for Innovation in Barcelona (2017), StartUps & Developer Award at the San Francisco Music Tech Summit (2017) and the IFA Berlin Prize for Audio Innovation (2017).

Braun Audio returns with the reinvention of its classic LE speakers from 1959 – full info

After 28 years away from the audio category, Braun Audio marks its return with a timeless reinvention of its classic LE speakers from 1959.

The LE range comprises of three speakers, the LE01, LE02 and LE03, and will be available to purchase in black or white from October. The perfect combination of form and function, the range is eye-catching without being intrusive: offering the perfect balance of unparalleled performance in a minimalist form, showcasing the rigour of German craftsmanship. The clear, precise Braun sound of today has been achieved through the implementation of a bespoke developed DSP (Digital Signal Processing) pipeline in conjunction with high power ARM computing cores. It is then hand-tuned in Germany by a world-class audio engineering team.

As the LE 1 of 1959 utilised audio technologies widely upheld to be the best available of the time, the reimagined LE series leverages the cutting-edge of today’s advanced audio technologies. Balanced Mode Radiators (BMRs) used in the new LE speakers are key to delivering their exceptional audio reproduction. BMRs uniquely combine wide vertical and horizontal dispersion to deliver a near 180-degree soundstage, meaning that the units are always easy to position without the worry of a specific sweet spot of traditional speakers. Custom designed ultra-low-profile woofers, with powerful neodymium motors and rigid lightweight aluminium cones, offer a highly detailed and transient bass performance aligned with bespoke passive bass radiators. Rather than simply use off the shelf, motor-less, passive bass radiators, Braun’s engineering team has developed bespoke, high-mass and high-excursion, parts that tune the speakers to deliver exceptionally deep and punchy bass within the LE range’s slim cabinet design.

These have a dual progressive linear-suspension construction for increased control and reduced distortion. In conjunction with the LE range’s woofers and passive radiators, the use of BMRs enable truly roomfilling performance for each model of the new LE speakers. With latest generation class-D amplifiers and switching power-supplies, BMRs and low-profile aluminium high-excursion woofers mated to customised passive bass radiators, the Braun LE range delivers 21st century audio clarity, sound dispersion and bandwidth commensurate with the timeless, slim-form LE loudspeaker design.

The LE speakers have multi-room functionality, as well as ability to be wirelessly stereo paired. Individually, when positioned in landscape mode, LE01 and LE02 will perform as perfect integrated stereo speakers. When in portrait orientation, using floor stands or wall mounts, they can be configured into a stereo pair with each speaker assuming single audio channel duties (left or right). Placement EQ settings in the mobile app will tailor the playback dependent on where the speaker is in the room to achieve the authentic Braun sound. The Braun Audio app, available for iOS and Android, will also allow for additional manual fine-tuning to deliver preferred levels of bass and treble. The LE series offers more than a premium sound experience. With the Google Assistant built-in, you can play music, find answers on Google Search, manage everyday tasks and easily control smart devices around your home – just by using your voice.

The range features the latest solution for voice control performance: TalkTo by DSP Concepts. TalkTo utilises Multichannel Acoustic Echo Canceller software, which cancels out noise from the speaker so the microphones can accurately hear the user’s voice. This works in conjunction with the TalkTo Adaptive Interference Canceller, which cancels out noise produced by sources external to the speaker e.g. an air conditioner or television set. While voice assistants offer many modern conveniences, there are times when privacy is required.

Exemplifying Braun’s values of honest design, the LE range has been engineered to ensure voice control is always on your terms. Each speaker has a dedicated privacy button that physically disconnects the microphones, guaranteeing complete peace of mind. When privacy mode is enabled, the button and LEDs on the front of the speaker illuminate and are subtly visible from anywhere in the room.

With Chromecast built-in, the LE range supports over 300 streaming services, while regular software updates ensure system longevity. Each speaker’s premium machined aluminium casing is beautiful to the touch, while being highly durable. Their simple, minimalist button configuration and LED sequences are intuitive and embody the perfect blend of aesthetics and utility. This considered design extends to accessories like wall mounts and floor stands, which elegantly resolve cable management and offer the flexibility of placement around the home.

My review will be coming in due course.

Huawei Mate 30 series – launch date is confirmed

September is going to be a busy month for phone launches. But the biggest launch is likely to land on the 19th September from Huawei for a number of reasons.

The new Mate 30 series is likely to run the brand new Kirin 990 chipset which will be an absolute powerhouse. Secondly, the Mate 30 Pro is rumoured to have some huge camera sensors on the rear. That plural for a reason. I would expect to see big increases in video and photo quality this year.

The unknown question will be if the phone will have Google apps. Regardless, there are always workarounds including using the good old fashioned web browser, and creating a browser shortcut icon for your home screen.

Expect more news on the new Kirin 990, Mate 30 series and all the other phones being launched at IFA Berlin.

HONOR challenges the UK to be more #SwitchedOn around youth stereotypes

August 2019 – New research conducted by mobile tech brand HONOR has revealed that over three quarters of over 45’s believe that young people spend too much time on their phones, while only 8% of those aged 18-24 feel any negative effects of their smartphone usage.

To help shine a light on negative perceptions of youth smartphone usage and mark the launch of the new HONOR 20 PRO, HONOR has today unveiled an evolving graffiti mural in the heart of London.

The research, conducted by OnePoll among 2,000 Brits to analyse generational attitudes towards smartphones, found that although 92% of the UK now own a mobile phone, there is a disconnect between how older generations perceive Gen Z’s usage in comparison to how they view their own.

41% of 45+ year olds believe smartphones have a negative impact on the lives of Gen Z, while 62% of that same age bracket believe smartphones have a positive effect on their own lives.

Meanwhile, three quarters (76%) of 18-24 year olds feel that their smartphone usage is totally misunderstood by the older generation with 90% saying they had shown older generations how to do something on the phone, despite only 33% of over 35’s being comfortable admitting to this.

As modern lifestyles have changed, the shift in how we engage with one another has also taken a turn. Results show that, thanks to ongoing advancements in smartphone cameras, 95% of Gen-Z have now used photography as a form of communication with more than three quarters (83%) doing so multiple times a week, whilst Baby Boomers (35%) and Traditionalists[1] (43%) still prefer to communicate face-to-face.

Britain is more creative, connected and entrepreneurial than ever before with 50% of 18-24 year olds having uncovered artistic talents through the use of a smartphone in comparison to 24% of the 55+ age bracket. Gen Z use their phones for an increasingly wide variety of tasks, many of which could be seen as productive. For instance, 55% of the demographic know someone with a side hustle, of which 64% said this earns them money and 41% saying they couldn’t do it without their mobile phone. What’s more, almost half of the UK (49%) believe they are more productive due to having a smartphone, 60% of which are part of Gen Z.

Despite some negative perceptions from older generations, HONOR’s research actually revealed that those aged between 18-24 are using their smartphone in more positive ways than any other generation.

77% of over 45’s feel that young people spend too much time on their phones.

Only 8% of those aged 18-24 feel smartphones have a negative impact on their lives.

90% of Gen Z have shown older generations how to do something on their phone.

50% of 18-24 year olds say they have uncovered artistic talents through using their smartphones.

Disconnect amongst generations:

➢ 76% of Gen Z feel their smartphone usage is misunderstood

➢ 4 in 10 baby boomers and traditionalists (45+) believe smartphones have a negative effect on young people’s lives. However, only 8% of gen z feel that smartphones have a negative impact on their lives.

➢ 90% of 16-24 year olds have said they have shown a member of the older generation how to use their mobile phone, despite only 33% of over 35’s admitting to having had technical help from someone younger than them.

Graffiti Kings created mural that changes by night to reflect the research.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ First Impressions

My full review on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ will come in the upcoming weeks with my usual YouTube videos and posts here.

For the first time, the Samsung Galaxy Note series comes in 3 options this year. The smaller standard Note 10 and the larger Note 10+, which also has an additional version that has a 5G modem.

I got hands on with the larger Note 10+ in aura glow. Aura glow is really a mirror like back, silver colour perhaps, but when lights, or sunlight hit the back, you see bright red, orange and green strips. It really is an eye catcher. Personally, my choice is the aura black as this won’t interfere with my photography.

Picking up the Note 10+ felt like I was holding a flipping huge phone due to its squared design and the phone being all bezel apart from the centre hole for the front selfie camera. But despite that it felt like a wow moment. Samsung is known for having the best screens, and the Note 10+ just looks stunning. The reality is, the phone looks bigger than it actually is. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a big phone.

So with such an impressive screen, every action I did on the phone just felt incredibly immersive. It hard to be certain, but the speed of the phone felt fluid and fast, and significantly more fluid than my iPhone X that I compared it to. I also compared it to an iPhone XS Max. The XS Max looks so ancient next to the Note 10+, and I’m not anti iPhone. It seems that the new exynos processor and 12gb of ram, plus software optimisations have really added to the performance.

Talking of software, from my brief test of the camera, it seems Samsung has undertaken even more tweaks. I tried as many modes as possible including the front selfie camera which took some great photos of me. Obviously, I need a lot more time with the camera, but it does seem to show some slight improvement over my S10+.

Of course, we also have the S Pen with all its added benefits. That’s for my future videos and posts.

In fact, there’s so much to talk about I could end up creating the first phone movie review!

Stay tuned for me and if you have any questions please let me know.

Pixel 4 Front Radar System Revealed plus more juicy details

Google has just released official information on the upcoming Pixel 4 smartphone.

For the past five years, our Advanced Technology and Projects team (ATAP) has been working on Soli, a motion-sensing radar.

Radar, of course, is the same technology that has been used for decades to detect planes and other large objects. We’ve developed a miniature version located at the top of Pixel 4 that senses small motions around the phone, combining unique software algorithms with the advanced hardware sensor, so it can recognize gestures and detect when you’re nearby.

Pixel 4 will be the first device with Soli, powering our new Motion Sense features to allow you to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls, just by waving your hand. These capabilities are just the start, and just as Pixels get better over time, Motion Sense will evolve as well. Motion Sense will be available in select Pixel countries. This restriction will be a privacy issue.

Also new is face unlock, apparently even better than that on the latest iPhones and just as secure.

Unlocking your phone should be easy, fast, and secure. Your device should be able to recognize you—and only you—without any fuss. Face unlock may be a familiar feature for smartphones, but we’re engineering it differently.

Other phones require you to lift the device all the way up, pose in a certain way, wait for it to unlock, and then swipe to get to the homescreen. Pixel 4 does all of that in a much more streamlined way. As you reach for Pixel 4, Soli proactively turns on the face unlock sensors, recognizing that you may want to unlock your phone. If the face unlock sensors and algorithms recognize you, the phone will open as you pick it up, all in one motion. Better yet, face unlock works in almost any orientation—even if you’re holding it upside down—and you can use it for secure payments and app authentication too.

Keeping your data safe with Pixel 4.

Security and privacy are core principles for Pixel. Face unlock uses facial recognition technology that is processed on your device, so that image data never leaves your phone. The images used for face unlock are never saved or shared with other Google services. To protect your privacy and security, your face data is securely stored in Pixel’s Titan M security chip. Similarly, Soli sensor data is also processed on your phone, and it’s never saved or shared with other Google services.
