B&O launches Beoplay H5, wireless in-ear headphones aimed at fitness fans

“B&O launches Beoplay H5, wireless in-ear headphones aimed at fitness fans.

If you care about audio quality even while you run or work out, Bang & Olufsen‘s latest wireless in-ear headphones may tick the box. The Beoplay H5 have a number of features aimed directly at fitness fans. First, the cable is moulded directly into the rubber, which B&O says keeps the sweat out, to avoid corrosion in the electronics, while the earpiece housings are also moisture-resistant. Second, the shape has been ‘meticulously tested and improved’ to provide a snug fit no matter what shape your ear canal, so they shouldn’t fall out. Third, when you’re done listening, the two earpieces snap magnetically together, keeping the headphones locked safely around your neck.”

On paper these look promising so I hope they sound as good as they look. Many fitness type headphones compromise top not audio quality over fitness and fitment features.

Apple might buy Tidal Music Streaming Service – Viewpoint

“The talks are ongoing and may not result in a deal,” reports the Wall Street Journal, which says Apple is considering buying the company as a way to bolster its strategy to spend tons of cash on artist exclusives.

Despite scoring exclusives from everyone from Rhianna to Madonna, Tidal has struggled to keep up with the pace of paying subscribers Apple Music and Spotify are adding. Apple Music boasts more than 15 million paying listeners. Spotify has 30 million. But Tidal only has 4.2 million.”

Currently I am subscribing to Tidal at £19.99 a month to listen to Hi Resolution music. I am not subscribing because of any music exclusives, I am subscribing so that I can listen to hi resolution music. Does this deal makes sense for Apple. Yes it does to remove the competition and gain access to any deals Jay Z can muster together. But I hope if Apple does purchase Tidal, that we don’t lose the Hi Resolution music, but instead Apple raises the game with hi resolution music streaming!”

At the Mi Max launch event in New Delhi, Xiaomi announced that the public beta of MIUI 8 will commence on July 11, with the stable build becoming available starting August 16.”

Upgrading my Mi Max from MIUI 7 to the alpha China build of MIUI 8 was a huge improvement. To have a global version with Google Play Services incorporated will be a massive plus.

Dell says it’s done making Android tablets, won’t push new updates to existing ones

“Dell says it’s done making Android tablets, won’t push new updates to existing ones

After dabbling in Android tablets for years, Dell is finally throwing in the towel on Google’s mobile OS. The company won’t be making any more Android tablets, and it’s ending update support for the Venue tablets that already exist.”

Just shows how hardware growth is slowing down and how saturated and thin profit margins are. Also, it is worth picking your choice of manufacturer carefully hoping you’ll get future updates and that they will exist in 1-2 years time.

Here comes visual confirmation of the oft-rumored iris scanner on the Galaxy Note 7

“After months of conflicting reports unsubstantiated by concrete proof, dubious so-called leaks, and wild rumors hinting at everything but the kitchen sink included on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, here comes visual confirmation of the iris scanner on the Galaxy Note 7.”

It will be interesting to see how reliable this method of unlocking the phone will be and also how reliable it will be if you sometimes have to wear glasses.

The Note 7 is stacking up to be similar to the S7 Edge but with more storage, ram, a stylus, iris scanner and the new skin from Samsung.  Will it be worth changing your S7 or S7 Edge for the Note 7. Absolutely not. But when has logic ever played a part in rationale decisions.

Spotify claims Apple won’t approve a new version of its app

“Spotify says Apple is making it harder for the streaming music company to compete, by blocking a new version of its iPhone app. In a letter sent this week to Apple’s top lawyer, Spotify says Apple is “causing grave harm to Spotify and its customers,” by rejecting an update to Spotify’s iOS app. The letter says Apple turned down a new version of the app while citing “business model rules”

Clearly Apple and Spotify are starting to clash on each other’s toes. Probably Apple playing hard ball but ultimately that’s the price of having an app store under single ownership. Could be interesting to see what happens next.

Google Maps for Android is finally rolling out multi-waypoint directions

“Google Maps for Android is finally rolling out multi-waypoint directions

Android Police has discovered in their teardown of Maps v9.31 beta last week, that Google has been working on implementing true multiple waypoint directions in the Maps app for Android.”

Once this feature is available outside of the beta this surely is the death of traditional mapping software like TomTom. With offline maps already available, live traffic and re routing already available I cannot see any reason to be using alternative solutions.
