iOS 9 is available – errors and ways to succeed

image

If you have an Apple iPhone or iPad , iOS 9 is now available to download.

Head over to the settings app, general, software update to trigger release.

Except, you may get a software error message. So what do you do?

Fret not, keep trying and repeating process.  Make sure you device is charging and over 50% too.

In terms of how many times you’ll need to try to get download to work, maybe 10 times.

Or wait 24 hours and all will be fine.

Apple Photos app on the MAC – opinion

As part of my move to the new iPhone and looking at ditching Google for as much of my cloud services as possible, I spent a few hours last night downloading photos out of Google Photos and importing them into the new Photos app on the mac.

Well, what a difference the Photos app is compared to the old iPhotos app. Photos has totally grown up, the infrastructure is really logically from albums, folders, moments and events. Next I noticed it doesn’t create a brand new folder directory for imported photos. Finally. Then there is all the editing features that mirror the iPhone and iPad apps.

By turning on iCloud syncing, any photo edits done on the iPhone or iPad will be mirrored on my MacBook.

Sounds really good to me.

It’s bonanza day today – iOS 9 and watchOS 2 comes to the masses – details on features, pricing, devices and more

If you have an iPad or iPhone that is upgradeable to iOS 9, today is the day to check for the software update. The same applies if you are lucky enough to own an Apple Watch, version 2 of the firmware arrives today allowing apps to be run on the Apple Watch.

So which iPhones and iPads are able to update to iOS 9?

– iPhone – From the iPhone 4S and newer. So that is the iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6 and 6 Plus.
– iPad – iPad Mini, Mini 2, Mini 3, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad 2, iPad 3rd Gen, iPad 4th Gen
– iPod Touch – iPod Touch 5th Generation

So what are the features of iOS 9?

Well, head over to Apple to discover everything that is new – http://www.apple.com/uk/ios/whats-new/

I mentioned yesterday the new iCloud storage pricing – https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201238 Click the link to find details of most countries new iCloud storage pricing. Far more reasonable now.

To make life easier if you’re in the UK, the monthly costs are as follows –

– 50 GB: £0.79
– 200 GB: £2.49
– 1 TB: £6.99

Don’t forget you get 5gb free, but that can get swallowed fast by your phones backup and media/photos.

So how do I get the update? If you do nothing it the update will arrive automatically over the next week. If you are impatient, then go to settings and check for an update and download as required.

24 Hours of News with My Opinions

Right here is the news from the last 24 hours, reduced in to some bite size chunks.

iPad Pro has 4gb ram. The Apple Pencil has to be paired with a specific iPad Pro. The iPad Pro is as light as the original iPad. In other words its heavy and huge but at least its cost will be offset by your cancellation of your gym membership. No more workouts lifting weights at the gym needed. Just watch a few movies on the iPad Pro!

The new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus has 2gb ram. About time too. Graphic intensive safari web pages should load without crashing as often, although the solution is not to visit sites like the Daily Mail or XDA Developers.

Google is updating its Google Camera app to v3.0. The camera app will feature gifts, creations and smart bursts modes. Yippee.

LG has announced it is holding a press conference on the 1st October 2015, likely to launch its new flagship codenamed V10, which will have a secondary screen option. It seems manufacturers are creating all sorts of gimmicks to try and sell phones. Lets hope this is not a gimmick but really aides battery life.

Microsoft is holding its own press conference on 6th October to launch its new range of Window Phone 10 smartphones and possibly the Surface Pro 4. Really the only thing that matters with the new smartphones is the app store and what new apps Microsoft have been able to add to it. The lack of decent apps does limit the overall experience, even though the hardware is normally excellent. Now what’s the odds on Microsoft announcing the Microsoft Pencil!

Apple is doomed. Apple announced that it is on track to have sold a mere 10 million iPhone 6S’s over the launch weekend.

Tim Cook makes a surprise visit to fans and staff at the Apple New York Fifth Avenue Store and gets mobbed by Tim Cook mania. If you own Snapchat, add Buzzfeed to check out all the selfies Tim ended up in.

Preparing to ditch Google for Siri – Editorial

A lot can happen in the world of technology in a space of 6 months.

In the world of Gavin’s Gadgets the change in direction can be even faster. Back in February 2015, I wrote this piece https://gavinsgadgets.com/2015/02/02/i-have-sold-my-soul-to-google/ on how I had sold my soul to Google.

On Saturday 12th September, I was a guest again on the Phones Show Chat Podcast – http://stevelitchfield.com/sshow/chat.html . Steve Litchfield asked me how I could simply switch operating systems at the blink of an eye. What Steve was referring too is my change from my current phone, the LG G4 and LG Watch Urbane to the iPhone 6S Plus and Apple Watch on 25th September. The LG G4 plus all my accessories will be sold within a week after receiving the iPhone 6S Plus. For the record, the LG G4 has been by far the best smartphone I have ever used. So why the change?

Well those that know me well, will also know that I enjoy using all operating systems. However, this time Apple has made a few changes that make the jump somewhat more attractive. Firstly, the iCloud storage pricing plans have been lowered to a far more reasonable and competitive level, meaning I can totally use the Apple eco system to its fullest, without paying over the top for cloud storage. I updated my iCloud contacts and calendar data to mirror that held on Google, so now I don’t need to even sync my contacts and calendar from Google. As a backup, I still have all my photos, media, docs and music sitting on Google Drive along with a further backup of photos and docs in Dropbox, but now going forward I intend just to use Apple iCloud for everything. Before, I sync my photo library to iCloud along with my music, I will have to tidy up my photo library on my mac.

I held off starting my 3 month Apple Music trial, but will activate this with my new iPhone 6S Plus. Now with regards to the iPhone 6S Plus, I already have received the official leather Apple case from Apple, along with some Spigen screen protectors.

So what am I looking forward to with the new iPhone? Well the new 12mp camera and all the software trickery that goes with it. iOS apps, iOS 9, 3D Touch, Apple Pay, using the phone with the Apple Watch and with everything tightly integrated. I really missed iMovie on the phone. This piece of software is so powerful and slick and even as of today’s date there isn’t really an alternative on android. And now with the lower iCloud storage plans, I can use Apple for everything.

As time moves on, it really seems that to get the most from your phone, it is best to ensure you use the respective cloud and apps that are part of your phones operating system. So if ever I moved back to Google, I still have a copy of my data on Google Drive and if a miracle occurs and Microsoft takes over the world with its new Windows 10 phones, I have a partial copy of my data sitting on One Drive.

Now, let’s see if I can keep this phone for a few years 🙂

How well does 4K Photo Capture work? This is a new feature on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus

The new Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6S Plus all come with 4K video and the ability to capture 8mp photos from the 4K video.

There is nothing new in this trick, so I am hoping Apple make this feature even simpler. When I receive my iPhone 6S Plus I will be certain to test this out. The 3 photos from this post are embedded from my Flickr account and show Tiggy,Fury and George. If you want to examine the full resolution, just click on each shot. In total, I managed to extract 11 great motion shots from 4K video footage shot from my LG G4. I will add I did film this into the sun. Not ideal, but dogs and dogs and they have a mind of their own!

Samsung and Sony take revenge at Apple – details

After Apple finished its announcements of new products, Samsung and Sony wasted no time and took aim at Apple over twitter.( Allow a few seconds for the tweets to appear properly) Of course, it is all very well Samsung making fun of Apple, but at least Apple are selling their products in the UK. The Samsung Note 5 is not being sold by Samsung in the UK still.

I do think this tweet from Sony was funnier though.

Samsung then had a field day.

The Haters vs Apple – Editorial

A few days ago Apple presented their new hardware and software covering iPads, iPhones , Apple TV, iOS 9 , Apple Watch and so much more.

And then became the haters or fan people of opposing operating systems. Now for the record I use a LG G4, an iPad, a BlackBerry and a windows machine everyday. I also have spent a fair amount of time with windows phone. I have owned every iPhone after the iPhone 4. So I am fairly platform agnostic. Actually, looking back at previous brands, most have been Samsung or HTC. So basically, I enjoy using all tech regardless of operating system.

So let’s get back to Apple. Android tech geeks just don’t get it. People on the whole don’t care or know what specs their phone has. People just want their phone to work. And that is where Apple steps in. One of the new features in the iPhone 6S or 6S Plus is live photo. This records a second and a half before and after each photo to make it come alive. Immediately, people were saying Apple copied HTC and its Zoe mode, BlackBerry and Windows Phone living images. So if Apple copied , or was inspired by, how come nobody bought a HTC or Window Phone in huge numbers and or went self proclaiming the new live images. Why? Because they weren’t simple to use and required extra input. Apple just has it on. It just works. It works on all Apple devices including the Apple Watch. Facebook are going to integrate live photos from the iPhone. At this point the camera specification is irrelevant. People just don’t care.

As another example is the Apple TV. People were up in arms saying the Amazon Fire TV did everything Apple’s new TV does. Except it does but doesn’t. I have a Fire TV paired to a Moga Pro Bluetooth Game Controller. Only one problem. Very limited gaming apps on the Fire TV. Just watch Apple TV launch from day one with better games than the Fire TV. Once again, the specs of the Apple box don’t matter.

With android phones , it is very addictive to keep comparing another phone based on its specs. More ram or storage perhaps. Must be better. But with Apple its meagre specced iPhones play games at 60 frames per second consistently. A 4gb ram android phone may still struggle to play games at that level.

Now if you are a blackberry fan person or windows phone fan person I feel your pain:)
