Amazon Prime Air – Deliveries by Drones – Comes to the UK

amazon drone

“The online retail giant announced Monday evening that it had reached an agreement with the U.K. government to expand the types of drone tests it is conducting in the region. The new arrangement will allow Amazon to test drone flights that extend beyond the line of sight of the pilot in suburban or rural areas — a necessary ingredient in the aerial delivery of packages that the U.S.’s Federal Aviation Administration currently doesn’t allow.

The agreement also includes the ability for Amazon to test sensors that would prevent drones from unintentionally colliding, and allows Amazon to have a single drone pilot oversee a fleet of drones. Such a setup would be necessary to make large-scale drone delivery economically feasible someday.

The U.K. is a leader in enabling drone innovation, an Amazon exec said in one part of a statement.”

No more unreliable courier deliveries and another step towards removing people/jobs out of the equation.

Samsung patents hingeless dual-display smartphone

Samsung patents hingeless dual-display smartphone.

A patent application Samsung filed back with the US Patent & Trademark Office in 2012 showcased a dual-display smartphone with an almost negligible seam between the two displays and the latest application shows that the company has improved the initial idea. The new patent builds upon that idea. It’s not positioned as a device that has a single seamless display when opened and would be great for watching movies, TV shows, etc.

It’s positioned as a professional notebook meant for students and business customers which they can use along with an S Pen.

Other features will include ultrasonic input over and above multi-touch, a project, sensors of UV, grip, biometrics, and more. It may even have a TV module. The patent also notes that this device may also include at least one medical device which could either be a heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature or blood glucose monitor.

You can get discounted phones from Amazon if you don’t mind lock screen ads

“You can get discounted phones from Amazon if you don’t mind lock screen ads

Amazon has announced a new promotion for Prime members that could see up to 50% knocked off the price of their next Android phone. The retailer is loading select phones with personalized offers and ads to appear on the lock screen of each phone in order to provide these discounts. The first phones available in the promotion are the BLU R1 HD and the Moto G4. With personalized offers, Prime customers can get the BLU R1 HD for $49.99, or 50% off its full retail price. The Moto G4, normally available for $199.99, is available for $149.99 with this program.”

Not sure I would want ads all over my phone. Plus these phones have all of Amazon’s app pre installed. What about you?

– Net loss of 12 cents per share in Q1 2015.
– Revenue was $29.13 billion, above the $27.98 billion that analysts expected. 22% up from the same quarter last year.
– Amazon web services revenue was up to $2.57 billion — again higher than the $2.53 billion that analysts expected. An increase from $1.57 billion in the same quarter a year ago.
– Q2 revenue forecasted to be $28 billion to $30.5 billion.
– Unearned revenue came in at $3.77 billion, up from $3.12 billion in the previous quarter.

Is Amazon forcing people to use its Prime service?

Amazon’s latest attempt to convince more people to sign up for a Prime membership might not go down too well with the gaming community. Originally discovered by VideoGamer on Friday, it appears that Amazon’s Prime-exclusive items now includes several popular video games, including Grand Theft Auto V, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Far Cry Primal.

Several readers wrote in to VideoGamer this morning to complain about the fact that certain versions of video games were suddenly accompanied with the message “Exclusively for Prime Members.”

BGR.com reported the above which came via VideoGamer.com. To be honest this doesn’t surprise me and it wouldn’t surprise me if eventually more and more of what Amazon sells will be a “Prime” only product. The worry is that Amazon effectively destroyed a lot of its competition as it grew year after year and now it has more of a monopoly is free to pursue tactics like this. So what do you think about this?
