This is a simple test. Below are several shots of the same church using Superior Auto Mode is 23mp and 8mp and also manual mode is 23mp and 8mp variations. Except the order is all mixed up. No cheating by looking at exif data allowed. So name your top 3.
Before we get to the test shots, this is manual mode, 8mp, backlight scene. It is a cracking shot too.
Right onto the test. I am going to label each photo 1 to photo 6. All you have to do is say which is best, or name your top 3. I am going to say this that IMO, I believe the best shot was taken in Superior Auto.
As you all have had a chance to ponder which is which, here we go with the results. If you haven’t read this yet, just have a look at how good superior auto mode performs. Photo 1 and Photo 2 are Superior Auto Mode, 23mp and 8mp respectively. All the others are manual, trying little tweaks here and there. However, my first choice is Photo 1. What this goes to show is we all have difference reasons for liking a particular shot or shots, but also Superior Auto mode does a good job now.
And while you deciding on which shots are the best, here is a photo from one of the many artificial reality modes.
A big thanks to Clove Technology for sending the Z5 Compact.
Sony smartphone sensors appear on all the best flagship phones from Apple and Samsung and then appear on a whole load of other phones.
With the new Sony Xperia Z5 range, Sony has used a new 23mp sensor. So just how good is the sensor? Reader “Whitehartmart” kindly sent in some sample Z5 Compact photos from his phone. So have a look at the photos below and decide for yourself. I have uploaded the full res shots in to the post. If necessary click on photo, then select full size in the options.
So what do you think of the camera samples from the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact?
Thanks again to Whitehartmart for the photos.
The other day I filmed 2 very short videos of the Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact. The Z5 Premium was photographed but you can’t tell the difference really between the standard Z5, other than a razor sharp screen.
I really like the Z5 Compact. Great to hold and easily pocketable.
Anyway. Here are the videos. First the Z5.
Next Z5 Compact.
Sony upgraded the sensor on the Xperia flagship range. Below are 3 photos. Each taken in a different mode.
8mp Mode – Full auto
Remember to tap to get full size.
Another auto shot.
And now using the full sensor at 23mp.
It seems a shame that Sony missed OIS off the specifications.
So what’s your verdict?
More soon on the Xperia Z5 range.
Sony is holding a press conference in a few days time to announce all its new products. One of those is the new Sony Xperia Z5.
Well in true leaked style, here comes a video purporting to be the new Sony Xperia Z5.

For many years now the Sony Xperia Z flagships have all had Sony 20.7mp G Sensor. Despite this huge sensor and all the manual options, it hasn’t beaten the best of the best, especially in auto mode. This is rather bizarre as all the best phones with cameras use a Sony sensor including the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6.
But now that looks like it is all about to change with a new 23mp sensor in the new Xperia Z5 flagship. I just hope the pixels and included Sony software can now integrate tightly to create great photos in full auto mode. Also the addition of optical image stabilisation would be a much needed addition too.
