Revisited – Samsung Galaxy Note N7000

On the 4th September,  Samsung will announce the new Note 3. But how does the original Note perform,  that is now nearly 2 years old.  The answer might surprise you.

Nearly 2 years ago I bought the Samsung Note on first day of release in the UK. Everywhere I went with it,  people starred in disbelief at its size. I got asked loads of questions.  Some people looked on in horror at its huge size.  Nowadays,  the Note is dwarfed by the Samsung Mega and Sony Z Ultra,  both over 6.3 inch screen devices. So,  I was very excited to receive in the post a second hand Samsung Note to see what had changed and how it felt against the current phones of 2013.

Note

The first major difference is the Note is running Android Jellybean 4.1.2 instead of 2.3.6. 2 years of software updates have made a big difference.  It is slightly faster than the original release,  and predominantly bug free.  I had no app compatibility issues.  Every single game and app installed and ran just fine.  With newly released phones you always get some apps or games that won’t work.  The next major plus is 16gb is enough with a memory card in this old phone. Why? Well apps can be moved properly to the memory card out of the box.  New android phones have less internal memory free and cannot out of the box move the entire app plus data to the memory card.

However,  it is 2 years old,  so has less ram and a slower processor. However, it is still a dual core 1.4 GHz Arm Cortex A9 with a Mali 400 GPU. That means lag does exist and opening and closing apps is not a zippy affair.  But then it’s still acceptable. But the speed,  or lack of is the most noticeable difference compared to modern phones. It still includes a number of sensors – proximity, barometer, gyro and compass.

Flash.  Old phone.  Older Web browser that does work with Adobe flash versus Google Chrome that doesn’t.  Camera is a 5mp affair and perfectly useable, although not a patch on the Nokia Lumia 925 or Samsung S4.  In fact speed wise,  compared to the Nokia Lumia 925,  the Note is like a snail.

I am not worried about the battery as I just bought a new one.  Being removable helps! All accessories for the Note are now dirt cheap and extensive. Another bonus.

In terms of Samsung gimmicks,  it has a number of useful motion controls and Smart Stay. Multi Screen mode is available too. Blocking mode and Easy Mode have been added since launch software. S Pen software and gestures exist. But the nice thing is none of the tricks are over the top, and most I would use.

So apart from the slower speed, the screen is old tech. It is a 5.3 inch super amoled 800 x 1280, 285ppi. Not at 440ppi and 1080p but nonetheless perfectly acceptable. I also discovered it has USB Mass Storage mode, something the newer Samsung devices do not include, just USB OTG.

You can still buy the Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 new for £350. On eBay for around £200. And yet it remains a capable device even 2 years later. It has advantages over the memory and moving apps/games on the memory card properly, USB Mass Storage Mode and Adoble Flash support built in to the web browser. It is cheaper to buy including the accessories.

The negatives are its slight lag and delay between apps closing and opening. The screen tech is not the highest. Newer flagship include better S-Pen support, screens, processor, camera and often include other hardware like an Infra Red Blaster.

But overall, it really surprised me just how useable the Samsung Note is, even after 2 years.

However, with just 4 days left, I am now really excited to see what Samsung include with the Note 3. Are you?

BlackBerry BBM Inc

BlackBerry is on the verge of finally releasing BlackBerry Messenger for the iPhone and Android devices acording to a new report from The Wall Street Journal. The Journal on Tuesday reported that BlackBerry is considering spinning its BlackBerry Messenger division off into a separate company called “BBM Inc.” that would operate as a BlackBerry subsidiary with more independence than it currently has.

The company is also once again considering expanding BBM beyond BlackBerry, iOS and Android devices to desktop computers, according to the report.

Seems like software services is the future for BlackBerry instead of hardware. Especially after the poor sales of the Q10.

Archos announces details of some of its new phones and tablets before IFA

Archos has just announced several new tablets and a new phone. First up is the largest of the lineup, the 101xs2 tablet with a quad-core processor, aluminum body and a 2048×1536 IPS display. It also features a magnetic attaching keyboard for when you need to get some work done. Joining it in the “Platinum” lineup is the 97b Platinum HD, which is slightly smaller but still features a high-resolution screen and solid construction. Photo below. Looks good.

The next three tablets both hit completely different but necessary markets for Archos. The first are the 101 ChildPad and 80 ChildPad, which are kid-focused tablets with a simple UI, Google Play filtered for children’s content and parental controls. The next is a gaming-focused GamePad 2, which will be a follow-up to the original gaming tablet, details to be announced at IFA.

Archos also has two new 3G-enabled devices,  the 50 Oxygen phone and 80 Xenon tablet. The 50 Oxygen is Archos’ latest phone with a 1080×1920 IPS display, quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 16GB of storage, a 13MP rear- and 5MP front-facing camera. The 80 Xenon is just one of three in the “Xenon” range of tablets, with HD screens, dual- or quad-core processors and running Android 4.2 just like the 50 Oxygen.

Nothing unusual with these specs, apart from the aluminium clad with magnetic keyboard. I quite like that.

Windows Phone People App

Whether you have the cheapest Nokia Lumia 520 Windows Phone or the most expensive Nokia Lumia 925 or 1020, they all come with the People app.

First go into settings, applications, People and setup all your accounts. I have set mine up as follows.

But there are still options to add the following as shown below.

20130826-084230.jpg
Once you have done, you can decide which contacts to hide. Hidden contacts can be found again when searching. Now exit settings and go to the People app. From within the People up you have access to all your contacts, what’s new and happening on all your accounts including any social media, recent calls and a screen for Rooms and Groups.

If you tap on Rooms, Family Room you can invite people and privately share calendars, photos, group chats, and notes all in one place. Really neat idea. Now of course this being a Windows Phone means you get a live tile.

If you size your tile as above you get a grid of 9 smaller tiles inside the large tile. You can of course resize the tile smaller or larger. As changes to your social scenes occur, the People tile will advise accordingly.

All in all a rather good app with a wide option of services and settings.

Less than 7 days to go for the next huge wave of new phone announcements

Get ready for the start of silly season. Within the next 7 days, the amount of new smartphone announcements is going to explode. Expect every manufacturer to reveal their lineup for the last quarter of the year, and then on 10th September, Apple will reveal all its new iPhones. Later on in September, Nokia and Google will reveal their hands too with new phones. And don’t forget Amazon. New Kindle tablets, but will they launch their first smartphone this year!

What I will try to do is consolidate the new phones releases into concise readable chunks, with my view on each new phone. Who knows, I might even review a few of them too.

The New Nexus 7 Tablet is available to buy now in the UK Store

Another change in the UK Google Play store is the new Nexus 7 Tablet, available in 16 or 32gb for £199 or £239 respectively. At the moment there is free shipping.

The new Nexus 7 has a sharp 7 inch 323ppi screen. It is thinner and lighter than last years. Nexus 7 features dual stereo speakers and surround sound powered by Fraunhofer.Nexus 7 is made by ASUS and packs a serious punch. With a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon™ S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM, everything runs faster, and high-performance rendering ensures 3D graphics are smooth and dynamic.

Expect a review shortly.

Windows Phone 8 App screen

If you scroll back to yesterday, you will have read about the flexibility of the home screen live tiles on Windows Phone with my Nokia Lumia 925.

But how do you access all your applications.

20130826-073618.jpg

Well from the home screen you swipe right to left to bring up the app list as shown above. Now if you are like me and have installed many apps, scrolling down to TuneIn Radio would be a lot of scrolling. But if you tap any letter prefix you get this view.

Now tap on the letter required to accelerate you down to that part of the scroll list. Non coloured tiles indicate you have no apps using that letter of the alphabet.
