Phone Basics

I must admit being a little skeptical as to what a £49 phone could achieve but as you would expect it is not flagship material, but it is fine as a starter phone or for somebody that just wants a cheap no frills phone. In fact it is really usable, which is surreal when you consider its price of just £49.

In daily use, I have had no serious issues using this phone. I used it with my main sim installed. Occasionally, I had the odd slow up in terms of speed, but other than that it has been a relatively smooth affair. The screen is low res compared to the highest QHD screens on the market. It is also readable in sunlight and being low res helps it through a working day with regards to battery life. Talking about the battery, it is removable too! This is accessed by removing the plastic back cover. The 8gb storage is expandable for media using a micro Sd card up to a maximum size of 32gb.

Wi-Fi and cellular radios reception worked reasonably well too. Calls were clear.

The phone runs android 5.0, and is as near to a stock Google Android experience as it gets with just a few extras from Acer to improve upon the experience. This probably explains why the phone performs relatively smoothly during day to day use. The extras included by Acer include Quick Mode for activating the 3 home screen modes. Standard, Easy which enlarges the icons, and Basic which hides all the unnecessary menus. These simpler modes are ideal for someone new to android or an elderly person. Acer adds the following apps – Acer Portal, eBay, Barcode Scanner, System Doctor, Quick Mode and as this is a Three UK phone, there are 3 apps from Three UK. And the rest of the phone is pretty much stock android! In terms of AnTuTu it scored 15,154.

Camera and Audio

Below is a shot from the 5mp camera. Perfectly fine for sharing on social media. In low light, the Acer Go does struggle to take shots, but for its intended purpose and price it is absolutely fine. Overall the camera quality is satisfactory. In fact, there are a number of different modes and options that help extract the most out of the camera.

Camera interface. Despite the rear camera only being 5mp, the camera app does include many options including the ability to lock AE and AF. You can also change the exposure and focus point. Other options include 4 shooting modes including HDR, Gourmet and Sports. Several scene options are available from night to landscape and more.

Audio. No surprises that USB Audio is not supported, nor is the APT-X bluetooth codec. The loudspeaker maxed out at 83db but did sound thin. However it is positioned on the front of the phone. In terms of headphone quality it did seem to emphasise the bass slightly. A rather pleasing sound overall. A FM radio is included too with RDS.

Conclusion

I still can’t believe this phone costs £49. If you had this phone you wouldn’t worry about a case and would find it does exactly what you need too. It also shows how for relatively low specs and only £49, you can buy a fairly good smartphone experience.

Order the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus – check out the UK rip-off pricing – plus my thoughts

image

So if you want the 32gb model its at a bargain price of £749.

Whereas the 64gb version is £829 for delivery 3rd September 2015.

I thought Samsung were going to lower their pricing!

Who will buy this phone at this high price?

Update – The 64gb version is more expensive than the 128gb iPhone 6 Plus as Mike pointed out in the comments below. Next Samsung will say no point selling this version in the UK or Europe as nobody bought it. As far as I am concerned this is rip off pricing by Samsung and a disgrace!

In the US, Samsung is selling either the 64gb version of this phone and the new Note 5 for $899.99 which equates to £575, thats a huge difference.

Samsung just scored the worst and lowest poll on XDA Developers – details

When Samsung launched the Samsung Note 5, many people were left disappointed by the specifications and surprised by the fact Samsung then announced it had no intention to sell the phone in Europe or the UK.

In all the polls taken on XDA Developers, Samsung has just scored its worst ever, with 85% of Note 4 owners categorically not wishing to update to the Note 5.

The majority believe it is a step backwards from the Note 4, citing the following reasons –

1) Smaller Battery
2) Removal of the MHL port
3) Removal of the IR Blaster
4) Removal of the SD Card slot
5) Removal of the Removable and Replaceable battery
6) Glass back and too slippery
7) Only available up to 64gb
8) They couldn’t buy it even if they wanted as they lived in Europe

Normally when a new Note phone arrives at least 50% of people are looking to upgrade to the newer model or are interested in upgrading at some point in the future.

Unable to buy the Note 5 – Don’t worry Microsoft has you totally covered with its new phone!

MSNote

If you live in the UK or Europe, Samsung has deprived you of the ability to buy the Note 5 which includes its own stylus.

However, no need to worry, as Microsoft has you covered with its new Microsoft Surface Phone which comes with a stylus.

The rumoured phone and specs a 5.5-inch AMOLED display of 1440×2560 16:9, Gorilla Glass 4, Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, 64 and 128GB of expandable storage, Surface Pen compatibility, USB Type-C, Wireless Charging, and all wrapped in an Aluminum and Magnesium unibody, a 21MP PureView Zeiss 6-lens primary camera and an 8MP Zeiss Wide-Angle selfie camera all running Windows 10 Mobile.

If Microsoft release a phone with these specs at a reasonable price then it is something I will be considering.

What about yourself?

Nexus 5 (2015) – Holding the Phone

The new Nexus 5 (2015) will soon be unveiled to the world but in the meantime check out the below photo of the supposed phone being held in person.

As to the authenticity, like all these types of leaks, it could be a fake or it could be the real deal. Personally, I’m not 100% convinced. Are you?

Acer Go (Liquid Z220) – Check out the camera quality from this £49 phone

Acer Go

Above is the Acer Go also known as the Acer Liquid Z220. Acer kindly sent this £49 Pay as You Go phone in for review. The specs are the opposite to a flagship phone, so I wasn’t expecting miracles. However, its not been a dreadful experience. My full review will be published later this week but in the meantime, have a look at the camera shot below from its 5mp rear camera, and let me know what you think. Remember to click on the photo to reveal the full size version.

Macro Photography

We all go nuts (well some of us do) over how good our camera is on our smartphone. Well, maybe we all should just buy a decent camera that is small enough to fit in your pocket. This is what I have done. Except I took the Sony RX100 III and have modded it. The alterations are straight forward, and provide significant benefits not just to the RX100 III, but even more so to the earlier versions especially RX100 II or RX100 I. I will be writing an editorial on this later this week.

One of the weaknesses is macro on the RX100. However, after modding the RX100 III, I am now able to create macros as below. I am hoping as I spend more time with the RX100, that I will be able to improve upon the macro shots. No filter were used in these photos, just a frame added.
