Samsung, Apple and Google – Losers and Winners

Over the last few days there have been some interesting stats emerging from smartphone sales.

First up, following Samsung’s first quarter results it has lost market share to competitors. Samsung also suffered a 3.3% fall in profits. Consequently its share price has fallen.

Meanwhile Apple sold half the total amount of phones as Samsung, yet made twice more profit.

Google recognises it does not have a proper “Google” high end offering(s) to challenge Apple’s complete iPhone software and hardware package. So Google wants to have a Silver phone program, whereby manufacturers will have to adhere to strict guidelines on apps and the experience. These are to be high end quality finished phones to head straight on at Apple.

One thing is for sure, competition is healthy and maybe everyone will have to up their game.

Fancy lunch with Tim Cook, CEO of Apple – Well you can now

Charity Buzz is offering a chance to have lunch with Tim Cook.

“Bid now on this unique opportunity to have lunch with Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple headquarters.

Tim Cook is Apple’s CEO and serves on its board of directors. In 2012 he was named a runner-up to TIME’s Person of the Year and topped Vanity Fair’s New Establishment list. Before being named CEO in August 2011, Tim was Apple’s Chief Operating Officer and was responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division. Tim earned an MBA from Duke University, where he was a Fuqua Scholar, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University.”

Current bid is at $67,500 so you will need deep pockets.

Apple – 2nd Quarter Results are freaking awesome – summary of results

Apple despite fierce competition is raking in the money across smartphones, tablets and TV boxes. Period. Well precisely revenue for the quarter coming in at $45.6 billion, ahead of all estimates.

That equates to device sales for Q2 2014 –

– 43.7m million iPhones,
– 16.3 million iPads
– 4.1 million Macs.

And some further stats from the earnings call –

$150.6 billion – The size of the cash pile Apple is current sitting on
98% – Customer satisfaction rating for the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display
95% – iPad’s current share of the U.S. education tablet market
4x – web traffic generated by iPad users in comparison to Android devices.
24 – companies Apple has acquired in the past 18 months
60% – The percentage of new iPhone 5c users who made the jump from Android
62% – The percentage of users who switched from Android to the iPhone 4s.
50% – The iPhone’s current market share in Japan

Compare that to an average of 38M iPhones, 19.3M iPads, 4M Macs, and 3M iPods predicted by the analysts leading up to today. In the same quarter last year, Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones, 19.5 million iPads, just under 4 million Macs, and 5.6 million iPods.

Tim Cook revelealed that over two thirds of people registering an iPad in the last six months were new to iPad, while over half of those registering iPhone were new to iPhone.

Tim Cook was asked about the Amazon Fire TV. His response – the Apple TV is no longer a “hobby” box because of its growing hardware sales and the amount of content people are buying directly from the set-top box. Apple TV sales have reached 20 million units. And an update to this box is expected.

Apple’s iTunes account growth. It now sits at 800 million, most of which have credit cards attached to the account, according to Tim Cook. Another reason why Apple is raking in the billions.

The iPhone 4S and 5C are clearly popular devices due to their lower cost to ownership.

Apple then appeals to shareholders offering a 7 to 1 stock split and a $30 billion Capital Returns program.

And so this was the result to Apple’s share price following the earnings call –

Prior – 524.75 -6.95 (-1.31%)
After Hours – 566.15 +41.40 (+7.89%)

Clearly a good day in the office, although iPad sales have declined, more than likely over cheaper tablet competitors.

All we need now is new products from Apple to send the competition shivering again.

Apple releases iOS 7.1.1 update – and the best part is

If you have an iPhone or iPad make sure you check for a software update. It’s only a small update, improving a few items like Touch ID and keyboard responsiveness, while also quashing some bugs. But the best part is shown below in the screen shot –

In the AppStore it clearly shows in the listings if the app has in app purchases. So now you can clearly see that a free app may not be free after all!

Is this the front of the next iPhone?

image

An alleged photo of what appears to be a front panel from Apple’s larger-screen iPhone 6 has surfaced on Chinese microblogging site Weibo.

Thing is are we really that surprised?  And how much more will Apple charge for the privilege of a larger display.  According to rumours they want an extra $100 from carriers.

What interests me is the software and services improvements and whether there is any hardware innovation integrated in to the new phone.

Only 5 months to find out and at least another 1,000 rumours.

Nike sacks entire hardware wearables team – bye bye Fuelband

From CNET, Nike has sacked its wearables hardware team responsible for the Fuelband. Nike will only focus on software now.

What’s interesting about this announcement and timing is it’s close to Apple launching iOS 8 and their wearables solution. Also Apple’s CEO Tim Cook is an avid wearer of the FuelBand and has sat on the Nike board for the last nine years, which has helped the two brands foster a strong relationship.

A possible partnership between Apple and Nike wouldn’t be out of the question as the athletic company was one of the first to show support for the iPhone 5s’ motion coprocessor, debuting the Nike+ Move app alongside the iPhone 5s at Apple’s media event. Apple also helped Nike enter the wearable market in 2006 with the Nike+iPod shoe package.

Apple has also hired former members of the Nike’s Digital Sport team, picking up former FuelBand consultant Jay Blahnik last August and Nike design director Ben Shaffer last September.

Apple is expected to release the iWatch later this year alongside iOS 8 and the iPhone 6.

As they say, watch this space for further news.
