Samsung S4 Early Impressions

I have had the S4 for about 5 days. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster as there are certain aspects of the phone that are excellent. It feels great in the hand. It has a replaceable battery and a micro sd slot for expanding your media.

It is loaded with the kitchen sink of specs and software. Some of the air features are useful but on the bright sunny days we have had recently, they don’t seem to work. Shame. Then there is the smoothness of the phone, or the lack of it at times. It has lag. For a phone of this calibre there is no excuse. Then there is the low internal memory. Samsung really need to make this clearer that there is only 9gb free out of the 16gb. There is also the issue I’ve had of screen smearing, although it hasn’t been that much of a problem. Stock apps are force closing too.

Then I became aware of the headphone clipping as mentioned already.

All these problems remind me of my S3. When I first got it, it had bug after bug. Music stuttered too. But 4 months later following loads of software updates it was cured. The S4 is the same, unfinished at release. But it does have compromises. Clearly Samsung didn’t install a decent headphone amp.

So I’m left in two camps at the moment. On one hand I really like it, then I turn and hate it. If you ask me would I recommend it, I wouldn’t. I would suggest the HTC One or the Samsung S3.

Google I/O is next week – all 3 days being streamed live – details

Google’s upcoming developer conference, I/O, is less than a week away, and I expect to hear some big announcements.

Events like these always draw large numbers, but not everyone can attend. So Google will stream it live, starting May 15 at 9 a.m. PT.

And that’s for all 3 days! Best get the popcorn ready.

Samsung S4 and S Voice

I remember S Voice on my Samsung Note. It was awful. When I got the S3 it was better but still not prime time. When I had the Note 2 it was actually useable. With the S4 it has been improved slightly again. So sending messages or updating Twitter is fairly simple. I have tried having some fun with S Voice.

I have tried asking S Voice if it’s ever used an iPhone and after a few attempts I got the response “No, I have standards.” I also tried asking it “Are you Siri?” and the reply was “I like to think I am.”

See if you can get your S4 to respond the same. Clearly somebody at Samsung had a sense of humour.

Foxconn might be about to do a Samsung

The New York Times has reported that Foxconn’s “new strategy is a shift away from making products that other companies design, and toward developing products of its own, with an especially aggressive push into designing and manufacturing large, flat-screen televisions.” The good news for Apple, then, is that Foxconn for the time being isn’t looking to become a direct competitor as Samsung did when it started producing its own high-end smartphones and tablets to take on Apple’s iPhone and iPad.

I sense trouble ahead.

Google Glass update details

Google Glass just received an update –

“Change to sync policy: require power +   WiFi for background uploads
Crash reporting
Incoming G+ notifications (direct shares, comments, +mentions), including ability to comment and +1
Incoming Hangout notifications
Transcription of queries & messages is now wicked-fast
Long-press to search from anywhere in the UI (no longer just from off)
International number dialing + SMS
Hop animation on disallowed swipes in the UI
New On-Head Detection calibration flow
Show device Serial Number on Device Info card
More reliable estimation of battery charge remaining
New recipient-list mosaic”

Early reports from users using this new technology say that it has potential but it’s not ready for prime time. Also eye strain is also being reported. Not sure Google Glass is for me either.

Would you wear this new tech?

Samsung releasing at least 5 new phones very soon

SamMobile has revealed that there are launch dates for various Samsung Galaxy devices, including the Rugged Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy S4 Zoom, and the Galaxy S4 Mini. That’s a total of five different devices. The S4 Active will supposedly be available in Metallic Orange according to the reports and will hit stores sometime in mid-July. Bizarre choice of colour.

Of the five devices on the list, only the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8 have been officially announced, and the Rugged Galaxy S4 has only been confirmed by a Samsung executive. As for the Galaxy S4 Mini and the Galaxy S4 Zoom, we also lack official details for them as well. Looking to the future, we believe Samsung will announce the 3 versions of the Galaxy S4 towards the end of this month.

Check out the date range list below, and make sure to let us know what you think about Samsung’s decision to go with the color ‘metallic orange’ for the S4 Active.

Amazon secures new market in China ahead of Google

Amazon has become the first Western technology firm to offer paid-for Android apps in China – beating Google. Google’s Chinese store only offers free apps.

Amazon’s move paves the way for it to launch its Kindle e-reader devices in the country. As well as curating existing apps, Amazon said it will work with local developers to create programs specifically for local users.

Compared to its dominant position in other countries such as the US and UK, Amazon controlled less than 3% of China’s massive 169bn yuan (£17.6bn) business-to-consumer e-commerce market in the fourth quarter last year. This move by Amazon was a cracking decision and might prove troublesome for Google in later years.

Will Samsung release another phone this week? Oh but it did the Galaxy Core

Hot on the heels of the Galaxy S4 comes the Galaxy Core. Do we really care though! This will be one of a million new Galaxy variations. Well this is the spec, if you’re interested.

The Galaxy Core is a 4.3-inch WVGA handset offering a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage and a microSD slot. Running Touchwiz/Jelly Bean, the phone has a 5-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and a VGA front camera. Galaxy-style software features like Motion UI, Smart Stay, Smart Alert and S Voice. Dual SIM will be an option too.

Why can’t Samsung make this size of phone but with S4 specs? Then we would have a true iPhone competitor.
