Apple hits three-year low in smartphone marketshare, shipment figures reveal

Apple hits three-year low in smartphone marketshare, shipment figures reveal.

Fresh reports during Q2 2013 have shown smartphones have outsold their less-intelligent feature phones for the second quarter in a row. Strategy Analytics says shipments hit a record-breaking 237.9 million. According to IDC, Samsung managed to ship a total of 72.4 million smartphones during Q2 – a 43.9% boost year over year – with help of the Galaxy S 4 and price cuts to the GS3. To put that in perspective, that’s more than double the 31.2 million iPhones Apple managed to ship, and Strategy Analytics claims this marks a three-year low in Apple’s marketshare. While LG and ZTE each occupy third and fifth place, respectively, Lenovo pushed Huawei out of the number four slot by sending out 11.3 million handsets.

However, I do expect Apple to bounce back with it’s new products and iOS refresh.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom – review and first impressions coming soon

image

I decided to take the plunge and move to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom smartphone. Or is it camera?

Later tomorrow, or Sunday I hope to have some first impressions up, plus a daily review next week.

If you would like to know anything particular about this device please let me know and I will try and answer any questions.

I will be selling my HTC One silver, currently locked to 3, but debranded etc and running the latest stock UK 4.2.2 firmware. It will come with the box, headphones, some cases and screen protector fitted. It does have a few marks on rear. Photos etc will be uploaded to a new post later tonight. Price £355.

Stock availablity of the S4 Zoom is limited and the high street pricing very expensive. However, Clove Technology not only had stock, but were selling it lower too. Plus they are lovely people to support. Thanks Clove for your help today!

Anyway, time to zoom off to lunch.

Sony confirms list of devices to be upgraded to android 4.3

Sony has been quick to announce its upgrade plans on its blog. It stated the following –

So, Sony’s Jelly Bean 4.2 upgrade for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL is well underway* – next up, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z will start receiving 4.2 from early August.

Yesterday you probably saw Google announce the next version of Jelly Bean (Android 4.3) – we’re already getting stuck in and can confirm we’ll make 4.3 available for: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra…

We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure to follow @SonyMobileNews for all the latest.

So despite Sony’s previous track record with lack of updates, it seems they are trying to make amends now.

The new Nexus 7 is available for pre-order in the UK now

The new Nexus 7 is now available to pre order from either PC World or Currys .

Currys and PC World, both parts of the Dixons group, are listing the 16 and 32-gigabyte versions of the tablet for pre-order, priced at £199.99 and £239.99 respectively with an availability date of 13th September 2013. These are for the wifi only models. No information is available yet on the LTE version.

It is certainly going to be a good time to buy technology in the last quarter of 2013, but it is also worth waiting to see what is available from all companies first before parting with your cash.

Google+ Local to be retired August 7

Google+ Local is to be retired August 7 2013.

Now that the updated Google Maps iOS application has Google+ Local features included,  Google has made the decision to axe the Google+ Local application. The announcement was made through an email:

Google+ Local app for iOS will be retired on August 7th.

Hello,
We’re emailing to announce that the Google+ Local app for iOS will be retired on August 7th, 2013.
The good news is that all features in the Google+ Local app are now available in Google Maps for Mobile on iOS devices:
• Search by categories of places, like “restaurants” or “coffee shops”
• Read place information, including written reviews, average price, address and Street View (where available)
• See what people in your Google+ circles have to say about their favorite places around the world
• Rate and review places you’ve been to
• Share places, locations and businesses you find
Learn more about Google Maps for iOS.
This means that after August 7th, you’ll no longer be able to access the Google+ Local app through your iOS device. Any reviews and ratings that you created will be available on your Google+ profile and in the Google Maps iOS app.
Thank you for using Google+ Local for iOS.
Sincerely,
The Google Maps Team

At least Google kept the features instead of removing them suddenly.

Oppo Find 7 – complete with a whopping 4,000 mAH battery

The current Oppo Find 5 has proven to be popular due to its good build quality and the companies massive support to developers and alternative roms.

Replacing the Find 5 is the Find 7 which amongst other things features a 4,000 mAH battery which is twice the power of most new phones. Feature wise it will include –

Snapdragon 800 processor
2GB RAM
32GB internal storage
13-megapixel main camera, 8-megapixel front camera
4000 mAh battery
Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

I think competition in this space is huge and I cannot see the Find 7 being anything other than a niche device.

Apple’s iOS is still top for ad revenue

Despite Apple losing the crown for the world’s top phone manufacturer to Samsung, it still retains the undisputed crown for what really counts and that is mobile ad revenue.

The Next Web reported that Opera’s latest figures show that iOS devices generate almost half of all mobile ad revenue across its network,  Android devices 28% , BlackBerry generates 5.4%, Symbian 1.6% and behind Symbian Windows Phone generates a 0.3% of revenues. The iPad is  dominant in the mobile advertising, but when removed from the figures, the iPhone still generates 36.5% of all mobile ad revenues, which is more than Android’s total market share for both phones and tablets.

Impressive stats.

Why the HTC One is a better camera than the Nokia Lumia 1020

The Nokia Lumia 1020 has just become available in the US. It won’t arrive in the UK until September. However, the reviews are up and I’ve read most of them and watched the YouTube videos too.

This was going to be my next phone, but at the moment I believe my HTC One is a better choice as a camera. I know what you are thinking. The HTC One is a 4mp vs The 1020 at 41mp.

Well, sadly Nokia may have engineered the best damn piece of hardware ever, but it is sitting on windows phone 8 that cannot cope with it prowess. Often the key to taken a good photo, is to be able to quickly capture that magic moment.

The HTC One from removing out of your pocket, and then firing the camera up, to taking the photo can be over in a second. In fact, you could have taken a Zoe or even 20 burst photos in three seconds and put the phone back in your pocket. Smile captured, animal snapped before it ran off and so on. And this is why it’s a better camera than the 1020. The 1020 needs 3-5 seconds to take the first shot, and up to 3 seconds between shots to save the photo. WTF. So even though the 1020 is capable of capturing far better quality shots than any other camera on a phone, it takes too long.

The 1020 uses a snapdragon s4 pro processor (this has nothing to do with the Samsung S4) when in fact it could do with the snapdragon 800 which is designed to work with lenses up to 55mp. The S4 pro had to have special drivers developed by Nokia to work around this processors weaknesses.

And the other issue with the 1020 is there are 3 camera apps loaded on the phone. One is the default window phone camera app, then smartcam and the the pro app. Why on earth didn’t Nokia remove the default windows phone camera app. Then to create a panorama or burst mode you have to exit the pro app and switch to the smartcam app. WTF. Too long a process and unnecessary. I believe changing apps to get different options has to be done, as this was the only way Nokia could get windows phone 8 to work.

Now the next problem with the 1020. It’s only got 32gb but takes shots at 41mp. The HTC One has the same amount of memory but as its a 4mp shooter needs considerably less space. In addition the 1020 can take two photos at once. The full sized 41mp (actually 38mp) and creates a 5mp so you can share it easily with social networks and email. The 5mp gets uploaded to Skydrive but not the 41mp version. This has to be manually copied via USB to a computer. So in essence you are in danger of running out of memory on the 1020, but once again you won’t get that issue on the HTC One.

Nokia clearly delivered the hardware, but Microsoft haven’t matched on the software front. The HTC One wins on speed and concept of its ultra pixels. Just to make sure everyone is clear, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is by far the better quality camera in reality. If the camera is already fired up, then the shot will be captured beautifully. You will just have to learn to work around the 1020 speed of initial camera start up time, and time between shots to save photos.

Verizon announced the new Droid Mini, Ultra and Maxx and killed the Moto X excitement too

The other day Verizon launched updated versions of their Droid phones. However, what was really clear from the announcements was the fact these were versions of the yet to be revealed Google Moto X smartphone.

Even the software features Verizon highlighted were just renamed features of those likely to be announced soon when Google finally releases the Moto X to the world.

The Droid line up was really impressive, from the Mini offering identical performance and specs as the larger screen models except in a smaller 4.3 inch variety. The larger 5 inch versions are identical practically except for 16gb and a normal battery life or the Maxx that comes in 32gb memory and 2 days battery life. All 3 have 10mp cameras and feature heavily in the use of voice and gesture control, the same as the Moto X is rumoured to include.

Whilst the specifications are extensive what I noted was the Droid Maxx. This is what all phones should have. That is a true 48 hour batttery life.
