It’s real – it’s S-Pen gate – its caught out even the best! – details

Samsung is in the news for all the wrong reasons regarding the Note 5. The latest is over its design implementation of the stylus (S-Pen) for the Note 5.

Basically, if you insert the stylus the wrong way, it gets stuck and stops the pen detection working again.

Leo Laporte from the TWIT network was live last night trying to disprove that it was even an issue, except before he knew it, his S-Pen got stuck!

The story has been published on the BBC News too – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34051994 and other top tech websites.

For comparison purposes, it was not possible to make this error/mistake on the Note, Note 2, Note 3 or Note 4!

  1. Another stupid anti samsung story. If you drop you iPhone in water it will suffer. That is not a design flaw. If you stock a metal implement into the charging port any device will suffer. Not a design flaw. You have to assume some level of competency in a user.

    1. You moan about an anti Samsung story by trying to introduce a (totally bogus!) anti Apple story?

It’s a flaw, pure and simple and ALL companies should be criticised when it happens.

  2. Im not sure why you are so hell bent on defending Samsung here Jah. It is plain and simple, it is a design flaw.
What fool would design something that has an opportunity to cause an error.
At the very least have the design incorporate a fail safe role where if inserted the wrong way the ‘catch-lock element’ which holds the stylus in place and activates the sensor does not lockdown.
Watch the video ~ https://twit.tv/shows/macbreak-weekly/episodes/469?autostart=false. Go immediately to 50mins until 61mins. It clearly demonstrates this is an issue.

    1. Not defending samsung just pointing out the nonsense in term of sense of proportion in that smartphones have many flaws that are more high risk. I have owned Note 1 2 3 4 8 and 10.1 since 2011 and never ever tried to insert the stylus the wrong way. It is not natural

      1. Maybe not natural but has been proven you can accidentally insert the pen the wrong way.
I.E. You are not concentrating, maybe talking with someone, pick up the pen and accidentally insert the wrong way.
There is nothing to prevent the pen from travelling down the shaft the wrong way around. This is a design fault. There should at the very least be a mechanism to prevent this.

  3. As I said I have been using the Note devices since 2011 and when you use the stylus as a regular user you just don’t insert it the wrong way. If you a journalists who is just reviewing it, they are not regular users and may insert it the wrong way. As I said, you more likely to drop your smartphone in water than insert the stylus the wrong way especially if you are a Note user. Nonsense story not worthy of space on the BBC web site. Complete hype. Old fashioned FUD.

    1. I also have had all the Note devices and once or twice by accident I did go to insert incorrectly. Difference with all 4 previous devices you couldn’t insert it the wrong way, so you stopped and changed the position.
