$1 Billion stolen from Banks in the world’s largest heist – no more safe cracking

Via Reuters.com –

“(Reuters) – A multinational gang of cyber criminals has stolen as much as $1 billion from as many as 100 financial institutions around the world in about two years, Russian computer security company Kaspersky Lab said on Saturday.

The company said it was working with Interpol, Europol and authorities from different countries to try to uncover more details on what it being called an unprecedented robbery.

The gang, which Kaspersky dubbed Carbanak, takes the unusual approach of stealing directly from banks, rather than posing as customers to withdraw money from companies’ or individuals’ accounts. It said the gang included cyber criminals from Europe, including Russia and Ukraine, as well as China.

Carbanak used carefully crafted emails to trick pre-selected employees into opening malicious software files, a common technique known as spear phishing. They were then able to get into the internal network and track down administrators’ computers for video surveillance.

In this way, Kaspersky said, the criminals learned how the bank clerks worked and could mimic their activity when transferring the money.

In some cases, Carbanak inflated account balances before pocketing the extra funds through a fraudulent transaction. Because the legitimate funds were still there, the account holder would not suspect a problem.

Kaspersky said Carbanak also remotely seized control of ATMs and ordered them to dispense cash at a predetermined time, when a gang member would be waiting to collect the money.”

All this money stolen and not one gun used to hold up a bank, no safe’s blown open. This is the 21st Century criminal.

Is Apple really working on launching its own car?

According to the Wall Street Journal “Apple “has several hundred employees” working to create an electric vehicle, The Wall Street Journal reports. The project is reportedly codenamed “Titan” and early vehicle designs are similar to a minivan. This report is the latest and most revealing of a number of recent Apple car reports and rumors, but it still notes that “Apple may decide not to proceed with a car,” with the usual caveats. Apple CEO Tim Cook allegedly approved the project nearly a year ago.”

I am not saying this couldn’t happen but personally I do find this a little far fetched. Maybe the purpose is about testing how Apple could integrate deeper in to a cars computer and the environment around a vehicle?

So what do you think?

Amazon UK and across Europe is down – major DoS attack rumoured

In case you haven’t noticed, Amazon UK and across Europe has been out of action for over an hour or so tonight.

At the time of writing, it is still down. This impacts Amazon Video and all other services.

The rumours are that Amazon is being attacked and or hacked and also suffering a major Denial of Service attack.

When will these DoS and hacking attacks stop? They seem to have affected nearly every major service.

Swatch declares it’s taking on the Apple Watch head on – details

Bloomberg.com reports that Swatch plans to bring its answer to the Apple Watch to market in the next 90 days.

“The device will communicate via the Internet “without having to be charged,” Chief Executive Officer Nick Hayek said in an interview. The Swatch smartwatch will also let consumers make mobile payments and work with Windows and Android software, he said.”

The simple solution would be for Apple to buy Swatch and shut it down, or an Apple competitor buy and expand the program or potentially Swatch and other watch makers challenge Apple successfully.  I’m really hoping we have tons of competition.

Hello Samsung Galaxy S6

samsung-mwc-2015

So Samsung sent out invites to its 1st March 2015 MWC unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S6. Take a good look at the image in the photo. Does it bend deliberately? I doubt it, but what it more likely is that the Galaxy S6 will have an Edge version like the Note 4. Except the Galaxy Edge is likely to have 2 panels.

Fortunately, February is a short month, so you won’t have to wait long.

Huawei post records results – 75 million phones sold in 2014 – details

“Huawei had an increase in revenue by 30 percent to $12.2 billion, making 2014 the first year for Huawei with revenues of over $10 billion. The Chinese manufacturer managed to sell over 75 million smartphones in 2014 — a year-on-year increase of 45 percent — and is looking to maintain its momentum in 2015 by focusing on the high-end segment and targeting 100 million sales.

Key contributors to Huawei’s growth were the Ascend P7, which sold four million units globally, and the Ascend Mate, with two million global sales. Huawei also saw a lot of sales in the mid-tier Honor line, which made its entry into European markets late last year. Devices like the Honor 3C and Honor 3X amassed a bulk of the sales in this category.

The Honor 6 — which offers a 5-inch full-HD screen, octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 920 CPU, 16/32GB internal memory, 3GB RAM, 13 MP camera, 5 MP front shooter, LTE and 3,100 mAh battery for $300 — has also generated a lot of interest, particularly in markets like India. Globally, e-commerce sales amounted to 41 percent of Huawei’s overall sales.”

With such strong sales, there was only one thing left to do, and that was review the Honor 6 which counted for 41 percent of overall sales. So starting Monday will be my review of the Honor 6.

If you have any questions for this review please let me know.

O2 is being sold to Three UK for £10 billion

“Via Reuters- Telefonica SA is set to agree to a cash deal of 10 billion pounds ($15 billion) to sell 02, its British mobile company, to Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing’s Hutchison Whampoa Ltd , the Financial Times reported on Thursday.”

As good as confirmed unless the deal is thwarted by the regulators. Not good for competition on the high street , but maybe better network coverage.

Three UK – the reasons for ditching the One Plan and unlimited tethering

Recently I’ve had a rocky experience with Three UK. It took them one month to fix my local mast and judging by other mast repairs it seems that length is of time happens regularly. If only Three had been upfront in the beginning with the time frame and not kept promising 24 hours later it would be fixed. Still, the one month free line rental and free signal booster helped compensate. The signal booster is brilliant.

During this downtime, I ended up speaking to several people at head office in the UK. They told me that everybody over the next 18 months would be contacted to change their plan to one of the newer ones. No exceptions.

We then discussed tethering abuses where people would download crazy amounts of data and not think it was out of order. We are talking tethering around 300gb plus per month. You can see why Three is having to restrict tethering to just 4gb.

However, I was also told that there was another type of customer who tethered a lot of data and these were ones who would really suffer with all the changes. These were customers where at their home address there was no fixed line broadband, or any other broadband other than that provided by the 3 mobile Internet tethering to the entire family household. Usage was high again from 100gb and upwards but by removing this facility would be causing a real hardship. Often these locations were remote too.

Personally I use upto 5gb data a month and might tether up to 500mb on some months. Has Three’s new terms affected you?
