The Ultimate Phone Review Collection – from HTC One M8, Samsung S5 and 20 more

It is often difficult to find the reviews of devices and accessories I have written about, so below is a quick way to find all the articles for the smartphone reviews. You might have to scroll back a few pages as I have used a generic search on the phone to bring up all the articles written about the phone. This is useful when new information gets added after writing the reviews.

Also check under Menu, Reviews – Accessories for wearables, headphone, portable amps, cases, power, cables and other reviews. Or click here.

If the smartphone camera is your number one priority then check out my 17 Smartphone Camera Shootout with tons of samples for you to decide from iPhone 5S, HTC One M8, Nokia Lumia 1020, Samsung Galaxy S5, Motorola G and 12 other current smartphones including Sony and Huawei. Click here.

Microsoft launches the Surface Pro 3 – Video and Views

So yesterday, Microsoft launched the Surface Pro 3.

The Surface Pro 3 incorporates a kickstand on the device, which is multi-stage. It is 9.1mm thick and weighs 800g.

“This is the tablet than can replace your laptop,” claims Panay. Microsoft has moved to a 12-inch screen on the Surface Pro 3 with a 3:2 aspect ratio and HD display, but the new tablet also has thin bezels with a silver and black design. Microsoft will start accepting pre-orders on the Surface Pro 3 tomorrow starting at $799. That price does not include the new Type Cover keyboard which costs a $130.

The new Type Cover keyboard cover features a new touchpad that includes backlit keys. The keyboard can magnetically attach itself to the front of the Pro 3 to offer improved stability while on your lap. Neat. Also unveiled was a $200 docking station to use the new Surface as a makeshift desktop. This allows for three USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0, Ethernet and audio to the device. The dock also lets you output video at 4K through its Mini DisplayPort.

So Microsoft claim that with this device you won’t need a tablet as well since this will replace your laptop. Only one issue is the high price, and for some tasks it is totally possible to use a tablet in a business environment at 50% or more less expensive. But for some needs this device looks great.

The real test will be the real user reviews. What do you think?

Nokia Lumia 630 goes on sale in the UK for £89 – includes Bing Health and so much more

Microsoft are clearly aiming the Nokia Lumia 630 squarely at the Motorola Moto E with its launch price of £89. Seems like a good deal, especially considering all the extra Nokia software that comes with this phone. I previously reviewed the Nokia Lumia 620 and really liked it, but this is being launched at nearly half the price. It also comes with Bing Health, so this certainly will be worth obtaining to see how it performs for its price point and that it comes with Windows 8.1 out of the box! Available from the 29th May 2014.

Press release –

Microsoft Devices today announced that the new Lumia 630 will become available in the UK on 29th May 2014. The most affordable Lumia smartphone to date delivers an unrivalled smartphone experience, boasting a quad-core processor and large screen at an exceptional price point of only £89.95. The Lumia 630 also features the award-winning design and experiences found on high-end Lumia smartphones and is the first device to launch with Windows Phone 8.1.

A quad-core Snapdragon processor to deliver a lightning fast experience with Word Flow, Internet Explorer and social apps like WhatsApp, WeChat and Instagram.

The Lumia 630 showcases a new matte polycarbonate design with changeable shells available in a range of fashionable and bold new colors.

Better entertainment with Xbox games, free music streaming and unique picture applications like Storyteller which really come to life on the 4.5” screen. The ClearBack screen offers great viewing angles and visibility – even in bright conditions.

Simple features make the phone a joy to use, for example, just one swipe will show notifications from email, social apps, texts and calls. There is also the new Microsoft Enterprise feature pack, Microsoft Office, OneDrive, Camera, and HERE Maps and Drive+, all of which work seamlessly to make the Lumia 630 a great tool for both the boardroom and the lounge.

A large 1830mAh battery means the Lumia 630 can keep up with you all day.

A wealth of storage is available, with memory expandable by up to 128GB via memory card, supporting easy saving and the ability to switch locations where you keep your pictures, videos, music, maps and apps.

The Lumia 630 goes on sale in the UK with Carphone Warehouse, EE, O2, Tesco and Amazon. It will be available in a range of colours including bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, white and black.

Smartphone Pricing – The Ups and Downs and then there’s Apple

There is a lot to be said for consistency when it comes to pricing a phone. Take Apple, they announce a new phone (or any device) and that is the price for the next 12 months until the new model appears. Quite simply, you know where you stand. The Apple pricing model also helps maintain second hand prices.

Now lets look at the rest of the market. Samsung, Sony, Nokia and many many other companies release a new phone at a premium, often with anything from £50 to £100 extra in the first month at least. During the 12 month period the phone’s pricing can vary, often downwards. So for example the Samsung Note 3 at launch was sim free £650. Now it can be bought for under £500. In fact, my personal favourite online tech company Clove Technology is selling the Note 3 for £374.16 plus VAT. Link – http://www.clove.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-note-3

So lets take another example. The new Sony Xperia Z2. On the market for a launch price of around £550-560. Then Three UK offered it on their network for £470. And now after a few weeks Three UK are selling it at £549. WTF. How does a phone increase in value or vary by such a margin and within such a small time frame. Surely that is not right. Using Clove Technology again as an example, they have consistently offered the Z2 at £450 plus VAT. Link – http://www.clove.co.uk/sony-xperia-z2 . They also happen to offer it with one of the best deals at the moment. The deal includes a free £120 wireless speaker & noise-cancelling headphones bundle plus £80 digital content bundle. Very tempting I must say.

I just think it would be better if all manufacturers followed Apple’s example of leading with a fair price in the beginning and keeping it price accordingly.

Just one last point. Have you ever noticed that when a newer model is due to be released, the older model pricing is temporarily increased. I am sure this is partially due to trying to justify the higher priced newer model when released, so that there appears not to be such a large price differential between the old and new model.

What’s your thoughts?

Did Nokia hatch a master escape plan via Windows?

In Nokia’s final earnings report as an independent phone manufacturer, the outfit revealed that both its feature and Lumia smartphone sales were dwindling.

In fact, the company’s overall sales fell by 30 percent compared to the same period in 2013. Fortunately, Nokia does not have to worry about that part of the business, as it sold it several days ago to Microsoft.

You could say Nokia’s sale/escape via Windows was really good timing.
