Apple, http://www.apple.com , launched yesterday iPhone 5S. This is the upgrade to the 5. New features include Touch ID. To improve security, Apple has implemented a fingerprint capacitive sensor directly into the home button, which allow you to use your fingerprint to unlock your phone.

The three official colors for the iPhone 5S are gold, silver, and a new space gray instead of black. The phone will contain the new A7 chip, the first 64-bit chip on a smartphone. iOS 7 will run 64-bit and 32-bit apps. The A7 chip will allow the CPU of the 5S to run up to 40 times as fast original iPhone and the graphics to run up to 56 times as fast. 5S will run Open GL|ES 3.0 too.

The M7 motion co-processor will works alongside the A7 chip measuring the accelerometer, compass, and gyroscope. It will be able to tell your apps if you’re on the move on standing still. In terms of battery life: 10 hours for 3G talk time, LTE and Wi-Fi browsing, and video, and 250 hours for standby.

The iPhone 5S will have an improved iSight camera with a new, five-element Apple-designed lens. It has a 15% larger active area and bigger pixels in each photo. When you snap a photo, the 5S will actually take multiples and choose the best one while combining them all for light levels. The new flash will have two LEDs for differing circumstances. The camera can also capture Slo-Mo video at 120 FPS in 720p.Burst mode and a few other camera modes are available. Panoramic photos adjust for light exposure during capture too.

In addition to the new iPhone 5S, Apple announced the original 5 would no longer be produced. Instead it was being replaced by the 5C. An iPhone available in colours blue, white, pink, yellow and green.

It features the same 4-inch Retina display as the iPhone 5 (full sRGB), plus an A6 processor, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi connectivity, a higher capacity battery, and an 8-megapixel, backside-illuminated camera with a 5-element lens. A new front-facing camera also promises better performance in low light.

The price point is slightly lower than the 5S, and clearly a focus of Apple.

Google under investigation in the UK

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is looking into Google’s acquisition of Israeli mapping app maker Waze, to determine whether it affects competition in UK.

The OFT is now checking whether the deal qualifies for a full investigation under the Enterprise Act.

In order to qualify, Waze’s UK turnover would either have to exceed £70 million a year, or the two companies would have to supply or acquire at least 25 per cent of the same goods or services supplied in the UK. Only then would the OFT investigate whether the acquisition affects competition in the UK.

If the deal does qualify for an investigation, and is found to result in a “substantial lessening of competition” in the UK, then the OFT could take one of three actions: it could refer the investigation to the Competition Commission, it could ask Google to make concessions to meet competition rules, or it could clear the deal entirely.

The OFT now has 40 working days to reach a decision on whether or not to investigate the acquisition.

This could be interesting if an investigation occurs.

WiFi or WiFi and Cellular – Confusion arose

I was in Tesco at the weekend, browsing in their tech department as you do, and noticed two people studying the pricing label of the iPad Mini.

They just didn’t understand what WiFi and Cellular meant. As I was standing nearby, I asked if they would like me to explain which I did, and then answered a few other questions. They then called the shop assistant and bought one.

Sometimes, techies often forget that it is not always obvious to non tech minded people.

Apple’s Hardware Plans for the new and old iPhones to iPads

This last quarter of the year is going to see some spectacular new phones being launched from just about every company. And that includes Apple. In fact, as to what Apple has planned certainly caused a decent discussion with my twitter buddies the other day.

And as to how spectacular remains to be seen, but Apple is sure to makes some bold colourful moves. I believe Apple will do the following.

The iPhone 5 will be upgraded to the iPhone 5S with improved camera, processor and not too much more. The real secret will be iOS 7, and the additional software exclusives that will bring to the 5S. In reality, there is nothing wrong with the current iPhone 5. It is a very powerful device and easy to hold due to its size and light weight. In past times, the new iPhone allows the older models to be sold at a lower price.

But the iPhone 4S features the old connector and not the new lightning version. It is also made of glass and is probably still fairly expensive to manufacture. So one thing is for sure, the 4S will be killed off this year. It will be replaced by new fashionable range of lower cost iPhones which will be available in many colours. It will be made of polycarbonate and cost less to produce. It will more than likely features the guts of the current iPhone 5 but as mentioned in a cheaper body.

The iPads. The new full size iPad will be lighter, and overall be smaller due to a thinner profile and bezel, very similar to the current iPad Mini. The iPad Mini will be update with a better screen, maybe retina.

The iPod Touch will remain as this will be at a cheaper price point the any of the new iPhones. With regards to the iPods these will remain pretty much the same, just with minor improvements.
