CES 2014: Asus Padfone mini is a 4-inch phone and 7-inch tablet in one

The Padfone mini is a 0.44-inch thin, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (with KitKat on the way) handset with a 4-inch, 800 x 480 IPS+ LED touch screen. You can then place the phone into the back of a tablet station rocking a 1280 x 800 IPS+ LED touch panel. A 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2650 chip powers the 4.09-ounce Padfone mini – and by extension its tablet dock – with some help from 1GB of RAM. As for storage, the phone is only 8GB onboard and expandable by up to 64GB via microSD card.Powering all this, plus the phone’s 8MP (with f/2.0 aperture and backside illumination) and 2MP shooters, is an 1170mAh battery. The tablet dock gets its very own juice to the tune of 2100mAh – both are non-removable polymer batteries.

The Padfone mini supports dual SIMs and comes with Asus own custom skin, ZenUI.

Nexus 5 receives hardware modifications

For all those earlier adopters of the Google Nexus 5, you might feel slightly disappointed that LG who manufacturers the phone has improved the hardware design. The hardware buttons have been changed for a more firmer fit and the loudspeaker grill is now larger to allow more sound to escape.

So are you happy with your Nexus 5 and or would you want to change your phone for the new slightly improved hardware?

Logitech UE 6000 headphones – first impressions

The Logitech Ultimate Ears 6000 are a noise cancelling pair of over the ears headphones made for iPhone, iPod or iPad.

The first impressions you get of these headphones are the packaging. Some serious marks for such a well presented and stylish box. It opens to reveal a pouch for the manual, a soft zipped case which had the headphones inside, the wired cable, and a cool looking headphone splitter, allowing for an extra pair of headphones to connect to your iPod or iPhone or iPad. The wired cable also has the controls for your iOS devices.

You connect the wired cable, remove the battery plastic strip and voila. Slide the power button on and you have the UE 6000 ready to rock.

So the good part of these cans in that the noise cancellation works even when the 2 AAA batteries run out. And the fact that it uses batteries you need to make sure you have a spare pair if on a long journey.

Switching the power switch on does cut out a lot of background noise although not everything. The noisy dishwasher was considerably quieter. With the noise cancellation on, the cans had more punch and dynamics. The bass is excellent. But I have noticed a slight hiss when the noise cancellation is switched on. This might be a nuisance with quiet classical music. The UE 6000 are very comfortable on first impressions.

More impressions to follow shortly.

My younger sister has had a double lung transplant – read all about her achievements in the last 12 months

So let’s forget for one moment that my younger sister, Justine, has had a double lung transplant. How many of you would go to a boot camp for exercise voluntarily? Not me that for sure. And on top of that she got 2 bronze medals for Great Britain in the World Transplant Games, held in South Africa this July. And then there is also the marathons and charity races that Justine ran this last 12 months.

Justine has written a fun and enlightening piece on her BLOG . You can also find my sister on twitter @lamlungartist

Below is an extract of the first few paragraphs –

It has been a hard year grafting with the exercise and pursuing the fitness regime and learning through Essex Boot Camp about a new way of eating called, Paleo. My weight remains the same but my body shape has become more defined. There have been many highs and some lows (when health blips) but overall it has been a great success with amazing results. Enjoy this journal and thanks as always to all at EBC.

In the photo above it was from November 2012 when I had tea with Samantha Cameron at No:10, Downing Street, the day I became Top 5 Inspirational Woman (Daily Mail) a very humbling day/experience.

October 2012
So, how did it all begin? I guess I was part of the…Oh I can’t do bootcamp that looks too tough and how does anyone do that? Fear and angst how I would ever be able to keep up and put my body through this type of fitness. My friend Mark (Ahlin), who most people know always used to talk about EBC. Mark used to say I should try this…no…nope, never, not for me was my normal response……then the Groupon offer came out and also the opportunity to have a free trial first session. So, I thought why not try a free session and see.

My first night, the instructor, Gabs (Gabriel) had the misfortune of helping me. I could barely do anything – my puff/lungs so bad and barely able to run around a small car park. Oh, how things have changed over the year. I actually enjoyed it and decided to go for the 10 sessions and then see how I felt about continuing. I arranged a visit to meet the directors, Glynn and James and explain my health situation. As no one would know to look at me I have had a double lung transplant and can struggle with shortness of breath. It was the reassurance I needed and then the rest is history as they say.

Apple to extend iPhone trade in outside of US

Apple is preparing to launch its iPhone re-use and recycle trade-in program in the UK in the next few months and hopefully before Xmas. This follows trials in its US Stores.

Following the UK, other European countries might follow.

What many people fail to realise is a better price is normally available via an independent “sell your mobile” website. Obviously, by utilising the immediate trade in within the Apple Store, it takes away an element of hassle.

Personally, I can never see myself going down this route unless the trade in value was higher than selling privately.

Sony Xperia Z1 – new deal offering from Sony Centres

This is hot off the press.

As of today, Sony Centres have a new offer. You may have to get the staff to check their system, as I doubt they will even know about it yet.

Basically, instead of buying the Xperia Z1 and getting the Sony Smartwatch 2 for half price if you preorder, you can decide to receive instead of the smartwatch 2, £75 off any of the lenses, QX10 or QX100.
