Nintendo having a tough time with the Wii U

The Wii U has been one of the least successful product launches in Nintendo’s history so far. 55,000 Wii U consoles were sold in the US in March, which is down from the 66,000 consoles Nintendo sold in February and the 57,000 consoles it sold in January. Nintendo could drop the price but there are still an insufficient number of core titles that are generating interest in the console.

Once again, apps/games are what makes or breaks a platform or device. And that is why iOS is such a good gaming platform, as it has such a diverse and extensive collection to choose from.

HTC One – Zoe Mode

Yesterday, Apple opened a new store in Plymouth, Devon, UK. As it is located inside a shopping centre, 100s of people shuffle along. Therefore, trying to take a picture inside the shopping centre is challenging at the best of times, but became even more difficult as people wanted to check out the new Apple store.

Well it would be difficult for most cameras, but not the HTC One. Simple open the camera, tap the Zoe icon which turns blue, and press the shutter screen icon. The HTC One takes 3 seconds of video and 20 photos all within a few seconds. It even takes a photos 1 second before you actually press the shutter icon. Once taken, all you have to do is tap photo, edit, retouch, object removal, done and save. So simple. So below is the photo I published yesterday of the Apple store in Plymouth. What is amazing, is that all the people that were walking passed the store got removed.

This is why I love the HTC One camera. It totally removes the need for editing tools like photoshop.

Google and Motorola Handset Plans

During Google’s Q1 earnings call, Larry Page made the following comment –

“Think about your device. Battery life is a challenge for most people. You shouldn’t need to carry around a charger to make it through the day. If your kid spills their drink on your tablet, the screen shouldn’t die. And when you drop your phone, it shouldn’t shatter.

“Having just seen Motorola’s upcoming products myself, I’m real excited about the potential there. In just under a year, they have accomplished a lot, and have impressive velocity and execution.”

Also mentioned was the fact that screen size was important to get right, and that was not 5 inches but smaller. Lets hope next month at Google I/O that some new amazing phones get announced, and that they are available globally with ease.

Google’s current attempts at selling hardware have not proven great when it comes to keeping the customer informed, logistics and handling returns.

Apple takes another shot at AppGratis and delivers another blow

After booting out app discovery and promotion platform, AppGratis, from the App Store earlier this month for violating two clauses of its developer T&Cs, Apple has now followed up with a second blow to the business, by killing its ability to send push notifications to existing users of its app. AppGratis has claimed it has some 12 million users of its app.

However, AppGratis have a solution, which is similar to other companies who have fallen foul to the AppStore or whom do not want to let Apple has a 30% cut.

AppGratis’ CEO, Simon Dawlat, has stated that the company’s strategy is now to try to circumvent Apple’s App Store ban, saying it will be going back to its roots by launching a newsletter and is also readying an HTML5 web app (another way to circumvent the App Store’s walls).

Looks like Apple may not win this won totally.

Drake Circus Apple Store, Plymouth – Grand Opening on YouTube

YouTube user Pixelbitlabs filmed the official opening on the new Apple Store at Drake Circus Shopping Centre, Plymouth, Devon, UK.

What you may not realise, that practically opposite the official Apple store was Stormfront, a very good Apple reseller, who started building their business in 2007. Stormfront closed their store last night, and today Apple opened their own store.

What was surprising was the sheer number of people that came for the opening, especially as it wasn’t advertised. Demonstrates the power of the Apple brand.
