The end of an era – no iOS devices

Yesterday, the last remaining iOS device I owned got posted to its new owner. That was my iPad Mini. From the original iPod Touch 2g, iPhone 4, 4S, 5, iPad and iPad 2 all of these had hours of use. But now there is nothing.

Instead, I am all android with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. And it feels odd. I wonder if there will be anything new next week when Apple announce their new line up of iPhones?

What about yourself? Have to gone from one operating system to another?

Sony Xperia Z1 official launched by Sony at IFA Berlin 2013 – details

sonyz1

The Sony Xperia Z1 has a 5-inch 1080p Triluminos and X-Reality display, a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, up to 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, 20.7-megapixel camera, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system. The press release also states that the Xperia Z1 can be paired with the upcoming Cyber-shot QX10 and QX100 lens cameras. That right, you can bolt on with an attachment these lenses and use the phone as the viewfinder and controller.

The Z1 is water and dust resistant, with an IP55/58 rating, the Z1 can sit in water up to 1.5 metres deep for 30 minutes and work fine during and after its removal. Unlike the Xperia Z, the Z1 has no cover on the headphone jack. Not sure how that works but it is rather clever.

Sony has included new apps –

Social Live – Allows you to share real time live images with friends on Facebook.
Info Eye – Brings information to you based on a picture you take of an object. Think of it as an intelligent web search. It works with landmarks, wine, books, QR & bar codes.
Timeshift Burst – Capture 60 frames in one click in less than 2 seconds, so you can pick the perfect image
AR Effect – Fun animations for your photos. Themes such as dinosaurs and ocean life are installed.

The 61 frames in 2 seconds is incredible, and 30 of those are before you press the camera button. Also the 20.7 mp camera does 3 x lossless zoom and includes an F2.0 aperture, a focal length of 27mm (wide angle), a max ISO of 6400 (in auto mode), SteadyShot, HDR for photo and video.

Whilst not too much was made of the audio, I believe it will feature 192/48 HQ standard. It has a micro SD slot and a 3,000 maH battery. In addition it will have Bluetooth v4, and a dedicated camera button.

If you are still not tempted, Sony is also bundling 60 days of free Music Unlimited access, 10 free PlayStation Mobile games, and 6 “blockbuster” movies.

The Xperia Z1 will launch this September but available from Clove Technology to pre order for £470 plus VAT.

This looks like a very tempting phone. Just wonder what Samsung, HTC or Apple have up their sleeves to combat this piece of tech.

One day after sending out invites to press in the US for its iPhone event scheduled for September 10 in Cupertino, Apple has just sent invites to Chinese media outlets inviting press to a special event in the country on September 11.

Not only will it be the first time Apple hosts such an event in China, it is also a good indication that China Mobile, the world’s largest telecom, could soon finally announce a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to its approximately 700M subscribers.

Alcatel unveils 6-inch One Touch Hero smartphone with E Ink and LED cover options

Alcatel unveils 6-inch One Touch Hero smartphone with E Ink and LED cover options

Alcatel’s has announced One Touch Hero. The new Android 4.2 smartphone upgrades to a 6-inch 1080p LCD, and has optional cover accessories: An E Ink cover lets owners read books without using the power-hungry main screen, a wireless charging cover and a MagicFlip cover with LED notifications. It has a 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, a  13-megapixel rear camera, an improved 2-megapixel front shooter and either 8GB or 16GB of expandable storage. Alcatel will also sell a Bluetooth phone accessory (much like the HTC Mini+), a TV Link video adapter and a pico projector that doubles as a stand.

6 inches is too big for a phone in my view, but I do like the sound of the accessories.

Android KitKat is the new name for android 4.4

Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favourite chocolate treats, Kitkat®.

I can see sales in Kitkat soaring.
