Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2

Samsung is likely to introduce the Xcover 2 at MWC.

Specs being floated for the device, which carries model number S7110, include a 4-inch WVGA display, 5MP camera, and 1700mAh battery, all upgrades from the original Xcover. It will launch with Jelly Bean in Titan Gray and Red/Black color schemes.

It’s should include IP67 certification for the device, the same standard for the original Xcover approving the device for resistance to shock, dust, and dirt. It can also survive submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Now, implement the same sort of resilience in a flagship phone like the Galaxy S4 and then we’re really talking especially since Sony has done this with their new Xperia Z.

The Sony Eco System

Sony has just launched the new Xperia Z smartphone and is also bringing out a similar sleek tablet based on the style and specs of the phone.

But what I have found even more interesting is how these new products will increase sales and hopefully brand loyalty by pushing other Sony products. The tablet and smartphone all have special Sony options for NFC with Sony’s new Bravia TV’s and headphones allowing for slick coordination with each other. Use the Bravia TV remote and swipe your Z across it to transfer what’s on your Z to your TV screen. If your listening to music on your Z, swipe it across the new NFC headphones and the music plays through them.

Then there are the new Sony NFC accessories. All in all, the new Z smartphone and tablet is worth more than its initial sales. It could be a financial life saver for the company.

Samsung to Take on The IPad Mini with the Galaxy Note 8

Samsung seems to make a piece of tech to compete at every and any level, be it bottom end phones, mid level or top class smartphones. Not to be outshone by Apple and its iPad Mini, Samsung are very likely to release the Samsung Note 8, a 8 inch tablet.

The likely specs are –

Name: Galaxy Note 8.0
Product numbers: GT-N5100 (Wifi), GT-N5110 (Wifi/3G)
Battery: 4600mAh
Dimensions: 211.3×136.3×7.95mm
Weight: 330 grams
Screen: 8.0-inch Super Clear LCD @ 1280×800 resolution
Data: Quad-band EDGE, quad-band HSPA+ up to 21.1Mbps down, 5.76Mbps up (GT-N5110 only)
Cameras: 5MP rear, 1.3MP front
RAM: 2GB
Storage: 16/32GB options, expandable via microSD card
OS: Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

This is likely to be shown at MWC.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus

Meanwhile instead of 8 cores phones Samsung is doing an Apple and recycling the older S2, with hardly any change other than newer software. I quite liked the S2 design so it’s good to see it given some longevity.

The GALAXY S II Plus features :-
– Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 plus latest touch wiz
– Direct Call enabling users to automatically dial a call by taking the device to the ear.
– Smart Stay recognizes whether the user is looking at the screen to dim the screen accordingly.
– Smart Alert lets users know about missed events or status updates just by picking up the phone.
– Popup Video allows a video to play anywhere on the screen in a resizable pop-up window
– S Voice lets users control the phone using their voice; and Voice Unlock lets users unlock the phone using their own voice.
– 4.3” WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, 1gb RAM, 8gb memory, 1.2ghz dual core chip
– 8MP camera features a zero-lag shutter speed, Buddy photo share, Group Facetag and Face Zoom
– AllShare Play, Samsung Hubs, including the latest versions of Readers Hub, Video Hub, Game Hub and Music Hub.

The Sony Xperia Z tablet

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z, is Sony’s campaign of bringing the same level of style and unity as its new Z smartphone.

The tablet is identical to the phone, except for the 10.1 inch screen. It’s got the same 1080p resolution screen, quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and the waterproof and dust proof specifications. It’s also packing LTE, NFC, Android 4.1, and a 6,000 mAh battery, all in a 6.9 mm shell.

Looks like Sony is back with a bang.

ZTE Nubia Z7

ZTE is rumoured to have the Nubia Z7 in the wings for the latter part of 2013. This a 6.3 inch phablet of monstrous capabilities.

The 6.3 inch display should have a huge resolution of 2560 x 1440, an 8-core 1.4GHz processor, Mali T658 GPU, LTE connectivity, Android 5.0, 4000 mAh battery, 16 megapixel rear-facing camera and 128GB of internal Memory.

Whilst this sounds far fetched, based on current technology advances, I’m certain all this is possible. But do we need such power and screen size.

Why Do You Upgrade?

This year there are going to be some really hot phones released. Starting with the Sony Xperia Z, Samsung S4 & Note 3, iPhones, and other Chinese manufacturers.

Now, hold your current phone in your hand, and ask yourself, what can it not do that a newer phone can? Of course, if your current phone is slightly busted or has a broken screen I can understand why you might a newer one.

Fundamentally the new phones coming up this year will be in 2 segments. 4 core and 8 core chips, 13mp cameras and then 16mp cameras and higher, thin and large, and then Apple does what it wants regardless of anything else. A newer phone might feature a larger screen size but again with larger screen sizes you lose one handed use but gain better media and Internet experiences. The newer phones might have features like NFC that you haven’t got on your old phone. Well NFC is not really that essential yet. Newer phones might feature the latest software but there are ways of making your old handset still run newer software, eg HTC HD2 is running a multiple of different software from android to windows 8. But do we need 8 cores to send a message, make a phone call and browse the Internet. No we don’t.

If I look at my iPhone 5 it does so much so amazingly well, even better than the S3, which IMO is an incredible device. With the iPhone 5 I can take stunning photos that even at my local camera club surprised them. Especially macro using the olloclip which is reviewed tomorrow. But why do I want to upgrade? Gadget lust is my illness.

So why do you want to upgrade?
