Send the UK Judges to every patent lawsuit

Samsung has lost its High Court battle against Apple in the United Kingdom after a judge deemed that the patents the Korean company was using in its case should have never been granted.

Apple has now fended off 24 patent-infringement claims from Samsung, and Samsung’s bid to secure a 2.4% royalty on every 3G-equipped device the Cupertino company sells is looking increasingly unlikely.

Judge Christopher Floyd ruled that Apple’s products do not infringe Samsung’s patents that cover the ability to send and receive information over a 3G data network. Furthermore, Floyd found the uses existed in prior art, meaning Samsung’s patents are invalid.

What the world need is the UK Judges to sit on every patent lawsuit and use its common sense approach to bringing these nonsense cases from both sides to swift conclusions. All that is happening is that the lawyers are dreaming of their next luxury holiday whilst innovation potentially gets stifled.

Tesco’s plan of world domination continues

Tesco, one of the largest UK supermarkets, has launched Clubcard TV.

This will include The Only Way is Essex, The Shawshank Redemption and the Care Bears TV show
and will be offered free to 16 million Clubcard (its loyalty card) holders – if they watch personalised adverts before and during shows. Initially it will only be available on computers – but tablet, phone and game console versions planned

The supermarket last year bought online film service Blinkbox, with the aim of taking on Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google.

It’s free but not everyone will want to have a film or show ruined by adverts. But I wonder if this is only the start, and whether future plans include having its own shows.

Samsung spend on marketing dances on

Samsung won’t be unveiling their Galaxy S4 until Thursday, but the company has already taken over New York City in advance of their Unpacked event. A group of Samsung-hired dancers have been taking it to the streets and Times Square, decked out in black and white and wearing a big number 4 on their backs.

As corny as this is, it clearly is having the impact desired. Lets hope the S4 isn’t over hyped.

iOS devices consume the most via in-flight wifi

In-flight Wi-Fi provider Gogo has reported that iOS users account for the lion’s share of mobile devices accessing the company’s ground-to-air Wi-Fi network, with iPhone owners comprising some 73 percent of all traffic originating from smartphones. Do android users not fly? Well there is some good news as in 2011 iOS devices represented 96.8% so actually statistically android’s share grew 400%.

Handsets running on BlackBerry and Windows didn’t break the 1 percent mark. Popular with flyers then !

Gogo said that passengers spend most of their time surfing the Web, with Apple’s Safari being the most used browser, followed by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Google’s Chrome. In case you’re wondering people spent a significant time on social media sites and Internet shopping.

Blackberry shares jump 14% – AT&T launch & Takeover rumour

(Reuters) – BlackBerry shares rose 14 percent on Monday, fueled by takeover speculation and news that AT&T Inc will start selling the new BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen smartphone in the United States on March 22.

The speculation was sparked by a comment from the head of China’s Lenovo Group Ltd, who told a French newspaper on Monday that the personal computer maker might consider an acquisition of Canada’s BlackBerry at some point in the future.

“External growth remains a question of opportunities,” said Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo’s CEO, in an interview with Les Échos.

Any interesting comment and probably a good fit too.
