So yesterday Samsung launched the S4. The specs are –

-5″ 1080p Super AMOLED HD Display (441 PPI) which works with gloves on
-1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor / 1.6GHz octa-core Exynos processor (depending on region)

-13MP rear camera, 2MP front facing camera with dual shooting mode + HDR modes on both
-16/32/64GB internal storage
-MicroSD slot with support for cards up to 64GB

And it’s made of plastic but that does allow for a removable back cover and replaceable battery which judging by all the above you might need a spare battery in your wallet. It also has a version of video calling but with more options using both cameras to show back and front and share the screen contents, something Blackberry introduced with their Z10. It also has an app called S Health. The S4 has a pedometer built in and using the accelerometer and other sensors you can use the S4 to manage your health. There were also accessories that linked up to this app. That’s neat.

The S Hub. Samsung have amalgamated all their shopping services into one app, similar to Google Play. Actually do Samsung want you to use Google Play. You can create photo books on the device and then have them uploaded and printed for a fee. Reminds me of Apple’s app Cards.

The S4 has wireless charging as standard and the back cover is ready to rock. Just need the wireless pad. It also has thermal throttling on the US version when temperatures hit over 70°.

So what do I think. Well specification wise it seems amazing. In reality would you use all of it? Samsung has evolved the S3 using better hardware and software integration. What we don’t know is the camera specifics other than its 13mp. We don’t know how good the audio quality is? We do know the screen adapts to what you are using by adjusting the colours and contrasts automatically.

Samsung also has a number of accessories to go with this from the S Band and S Flip case.

What was bizarre was the audience didn’t really seem to applaud the S4 during its launch show. Also bear in mind that the HTC One looks better and has a better screen. So Samsung theoretically is not top of its game. And if you want waterproof and dust proof there is the Sony Xperia Z. So the S4 is different but not game changing.

Am I going to get one. Not at the moment. I need to discover more about the device and I also want to see what Apple introduce later on, as well as seeing what improvements are made with the Note 3.

Sony Xperia Z sales

Sales figures for the new Xperia Z smartphone have been very strong as reported thru many outlets and in many countries.

The question is how will the Z perform once the S4 comes to market. It’s possible that due to its use of quality finishes it might continue to hold its own.

The only true figures will be those released in 6 months time.

Google Maps faces being banned

Some crazy developments have taken place over at the German court halls. The patent dispute between Microsoft and Google/Motorola, the one that accuses the latter’s Google Maps platform of infringing on map-related patents owned by the former, seems to be heating up.

According to FOSS Patents, German courts are inclined to enforce an injunction on Google Maps in Germany, and this ban wouldn’t just affect the use of the service on mobile. Google would apparently need to unlist Google Maps in the Play Store (and possibly on other platforms) for German users, block German IP addresses from accessing Google Maps from any web browser, and if it wants to continue to distribute Chrome in Germany they must implement a filter that effectively blocks Google Maps.

Now what is up with Germany and their handling of patents. Google provides the most detailed mapping services so by banning them would create huge backlash and affect millions of innocent people.

Google to retire Google Reader + 70 other services

Google has announced that Google Reader will be retired on July 1st due to what has been a steady drop in usage. Likewise, several other Google services will also be shutting down.

Twitter and Facebook are both alight with users who are expressing their displeasure over the announcement, and the search is on for an adequate replacement that lives up to its Google counterpart. This is not a popular move and I hope Google changes their mind!

Google Reader isn’t the only service that will be shutdown. In addition, CalDav API, Apps Script, Google Cloud Connect, Google Voice App for Blackberry, Google Building Maker, Snapseed Desktop for both Windows and Mac, and Search API for Shopping are all getting the axe as well. According to Google, this is its second round of spring cleaning.

After this takes place, the combined results of spring cleaning rounds one and two will be a total of 70 services and features being shutdown. Are you a Reader user? What service do you plan to transition to? Let me know in the comments!

Samsung vs Sharp

Reuters has reported that for Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world’s No.1 maker of smartphones, TVs and memory chips, to invest in Sharp, ta Japanese display maker spotlights an uncomfortable fact: it is no longer the undisputed global leader in displays.

Cross-town rival LG Display Co Ltd overtook Samsung’s display unit last year as the world’s top maker of liquid crystal displays.LG Electronics Inc, an affiliate of the display company, has beat Samsung to market with a TV using a new technology – thin, bright organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens – on which Samsung has staked its future in the display business.

And even Japan’s Sharp Corp, which had to be bailed out by its banks last autumn and which Samsung has now taken on as a partner, has pulled into the lead in some of the latest LCD production and thin-screen technology.

Samsung’s $111 million investment in Sharp, announced on Wednesday, will thus not only give it access to the Japanese company’s technology, it will turn up the heat on its own display unit that many analysts say has some catching up to do.

“It’s a warning message in a sense that Samsung is sending to Samsung Display,” said an industry analyst with a top four-star rating from Thomson Reuters StarMine, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the subject. Well that’s Reuters take on the situation.

Perhaps a bit more obvious is Samsung needs to learn the trade secrets to copy from Sharp and others and then produce better screen technology.
