Samsung’s defends the 16gb S4’s 8gb of usable memory – it’s insulting

Samsung explained to CNET that it was okay to deceive buyers of its 16gb S4 that it only came with 8gb of usable memory, since it had a micro sd slot for expansion.

Samsung added, “For the Galaxy S4 16GB model, approximately 6.85GB occupies [the] system part of internal memory, which is 1GB bigger than that of the Galaxy S3, in order to provide [a] high resolution display and more powerful features to our consumers.”

So why not warn people prior to purchase and also explain that apps and games can only be saved in to the internal memory!

And it appears Samsung are only responding after a backlash of angry customers has started. It also doesn’t help that mobile phone companies are informing customers that the memory is expandable and that apps or games can be installed on to the memory card. This information is totally inaccurate.

I think Samsung’s response borders on the brink of arrogance and one must ask the question why on earth did the 16gb version ever get released for sale. Samsung should have offered on the 32gb or 64gb versions and then none of this lack of memory would have arisen.

The larger capacity models can’t come quick enough!

  1. To be fair to Samsung, this situation hasn’t just arisen, it’s been around for years on many other devices. Also I’m sure other companies’ Android devices also are affected, though maybe not to quite to the same extent. We must be careful this doesn’t turn into a hate campaign against Sammy!

For me personally, I have never had a problem. I don’t play games, other than Angry Birds, on my phones. I don’t have a large amount of apps on my device either. Also all pics are saved to microSD/Dropbox and deleted from main memory. Music I buy via my PC and load straight onto my MicroSD card too

      1. True, they didn’t but neither have any other manufacturers either. There are many Tech sites and blogs going after just Samsung over this yet non I’ve seen have mentioned any other manufacturer.

  2. With root and Foldermount there is no problems moving apps to the SD card. Have moved my games and Navigon to the external sd card in my S4

    1. That’s good 🙂

Meanwhile you’ve voided your warranty and watch up as new software updates prevent rooting.

Not to mention some apps don’t work in a rooted device.

At least you have a solution that works for you.

      1. Could never dream of having a Android phone without root. Then I could just use my iPhone instead 🙂 And I have rooted all my devices and never had any warranty trouble with neither Samsung or HTC as long as it is a hardware error that has nothing to do with the software

      2. And Gavin, you are a XDA user as me so you should have read the article AndreiLux wrote about the S4 for not being able to be rooted anymore. That is pure wrong, it will still be able to gain root without any trouble for people that can read and follow a simple tutorial

      3. Indeed.

But for the average person spending £600, should they be resorting to such measures? Plus some apps etc wont work on a rooted device, which is a pain.

And surely if all devices started at 32gb, this would be a non issue.
