Watch Out Apple, here’s comes Amazon

For a while now I have always thought Apple’s reign at the stop would be most threatened from Amazon, not Google.

The Kindle Fire is the tablet that reduced the iPads web traffic share the most over Christmas. Now the amount may not seem a lot but I still believe its significant and will grow faster again.

To add to my argument, Amazon is strengthening its already large R&D department by another 250 employees. That’s huge. Adding to the strong rumours that Amazon will release their first smartphone, 2013 is looking to be the shift towards another dominant player in this industry.

  1. I wonder if the Kindle Fire’s traffic surge will be temporary or not. When people get a new device they tend to use it very heavily at first, and then ease off. That could be a big reason why there was so much Kindle HD traffic over the holidays. The cheaper the devices, the more of them that will be purchased as gifts.

I think if Kindle HD traffic stays constant at the rate it was over the holidays, and/or if a phone can come out and steal away some more iOS marketshare, then Apple might have reason to be worried.

But at the same time, RIM is supposed to be releasing the new Blackberry OS in the first part of this year, which means it could split some of the “iOS defector” market with Amazon.

iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, Amazon, RIM – we could have a very crowded smartphone OS market this year!
