The LG G2 Impressions

I have spent a few days with the LG G2. The specifications are readily available on the web, so I am just going to cover off my lasting impressions of this phone.

First the negative. The model I had was a 16gb version which in my books does not provide enough memory if you are going to want to store your music, apps and games on it. My theory is networks in the UK did not want to stock the 32gb version so they could force you on to using a larger data tariff.

Now the positive. It feels great to hold in the hand. The rear buttons are weird but you do get used to them. The screen is simply the best I have ever seen. It embarrasses my iPhone 5S screen. 5.2 inches of gorgeous screen and hardly any bezels. In fact the screen is the one aspect of this device I will really miss.

The camera was fairly good, but the freak UK weather meant photographing in 100mph winds was not possible.

Double tap to turn on or off is excellent. It also works when in other apps, if you tap on the status bar instead.

Battery seemed capable of getting me through the day despite me using it constantly.

Overall, it was the screen with its gorgeous display and tiny bezels that stand out. Now if the new Nexus 5 is based on this, but with a 8mp OIS camera, we really are in for a treat.

LG G2 is now official – photos and full specifications – and it’s failures

LG launched the G2 is New York yesterday.

It features android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, a 5.2-inch 1080p IPS panel with just 0.1 inch of a bezel. This is achieved using a dual-routing method in which the touch sensor uses two connectors instead of one. This translates into 75.9% of the screen occupying the front of the phone. It also has a 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC, a 13MP camera with optical image stabilisation, 2.1MP front-facing, 24 bit/192kHz HiFi playback (that is incredible), a non-removable 3,000mAh battery, 2GB RAM and your choice of 16 or 32GB internal storage.

The volume and power button are on the rear of the device. There are no buttons on the side. The volume buttons are launch the front camera for self portraits and the quick memo function. The phone also features functions like double tap the screen to turn the phone on, or off.

LG has a big launch planned with over 130 countries within 8 weeks. In fact if you read the spec sheet it becomes one long list of drool worthy items.

Except it fails before it even starts. The memory is being offered in 16 or 32gb, and once again a top flagship is ruined by lack of memory. The 16gb is being offered by Three UK, and it only has 10gb useable. It also appears it has no micro SD slot.

So, video, photos, your Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8, Nova 3 installs have just taken all that free memory. Such a fail. 16gb should not be offered on top flight phones. Apple offer upto 64gb on their iPhones and 128gb on their iPads so it is possible. Cloud storage is not always dependable. No Internet connection and you have access to nothing.

Now, lets take one key feature LG were promoting, the high quality audio sound at 24 bit/192khz. Have you any idea how much larger a mp3 file is at this level. Don’t worry if you are not aware, but rest assured they are considerably larger. And LG felt no need for a micro SD card support. Words fail me.

I feel with each new flagship launch, we take 10 steps forwards and 20 backwards.

LG unveils Quick Window case for the LG G2

LG unveils Quick Window case for the LG G2 which will come in seven colors.

The other day, LG announced their Quick Window case for their upcoming flagship the LG G2. Clearly a copy of Samsung’s Smart Cover, and it actually has different themes to what it shows eg. music widget theme, clock theme, etc. These covers will come in 7 different colours.

LG like Samsung have realised there is big money in cases,  but also it adds a little extra usefulness to the phone function.

LG G2 launch date is 9th August but why wait – photos revealed

Engadget published leaked photos of the LG G2, the upcoming flagship smartphone from LG. It is a monster powerhouse with all the latest specs.

As you can see it looks very similar to the LG Nexus 4, although somewhat slimmer. Rather unusual is the volume button arrangement on the rear instead of the side edges.

Also fairly obvious from the photos is the ultra thin bezel.

From these pictures, the LG G2 should features 2gb ram, 32gb internal memory plus micro sd card expansion, Snapdragon 800 processor running at 2.3 Ghz, 5.2 inch 1080p screen. In other words a computer in your pocket.

My only concern is what is LG’s Unique Selling Point. All phones look similar nowadays so its needs something different.
