Belkin WeMo Beta on Android

Belkin have finally released a beta app for their WeMo app that has been exclusively on iOS.

It’s for android version 4.0 upwards and at the moment has only been tested by Belkin on the Samsung S3.

The Belkin WeMo is a fantastic product which I use to control lamps and other electrical items. This was one app I really needed on android if I was ever considering switching.

Android may be great but at what cost?

Every time you purchase an app from Google Play, Google sends your email address, your town and in many cases your full name to the app’s developer.

This happens because every transaction is carried out via Google Wallet. Google tells the developer not to use the data for marketing. That’s fail safe, not.

Makes you wonder how much Google knows about you and your habits, and how much of this is sold on. This doesn’t infuse confidence in my book.

What’s your view on data privacy?

The Bristol Sound & Vision Show

The Bristol Sound & Vision Show starts this Friday 22nd Feb until Sunday 24th Feb.

There are over 187 brands exhibiting from Sennheiser to Sony to Rega and many more. So if you like music and TV its worth a visit to see what can be achieved! Lots of free competitions too.

Also the shows organisers have an app to help you with the show for both android and ios. Window users are out of luck but they do have a mobile web page. Details of the apps can be found here.

The app is really good and provides details on nearly every exhibitor and anything else you might need for the day. Even if you are not going it is worth downloading the app, searching for the show, install its guide and see the interface.

New Devices

So yesterday HTC announced the One. Sony are releasing the Xperia Z. Samsung have the S3 and soon the S4 and the Note 2.

Each one of the devices has novel hardware or software. The HTC One is a mind blowing device from the aluminium sexy look, decent stereo speakers, power button that acts as an infra red remote and customised software. The Xperia Z is dust and water resistant and comes packing loads of tweaks from Sony. And then Samsung with the Note 2 and the novel large screen and S Pen software and stylus. The S3 is equally as impressive.

And then you have the iPhone 5. It feels somewhat dull in comparison. There isn’t any hardware feature that’s leader of the pack. iOS is very good with Siri and iMessage and other great software. But now for the very first time I do wonder if Apple can offer something to wow the audience and take them by surprise. Incremental updates don’t wash it anymore. Apps cannot be the excuse either. It time to blow the gates open and give us a dynamic piece of kit.

Just for the record though, the iPhone 5 does work really well. It just doesn’t feel bleeding edge.

4G to ruin TV for over 2m UK homes

Filters will be provided for Freeview televisions which experience reception problems following the roll out of 4G later this year. But that’s only one filter per household. Additional filters will cost £18.

Ofcom estimates that the TV viewing in up to 2.3 million British households could be affected by 4G but only 40% of them have Freeview.

However, around 1% of affected Freeview households 40,000 , will be unable to use them and will be offered an alternative instead. That is if alternatives can be used and then who pays for the cable or satellite?

Some people are going to be really mad at losing Freeview digital TV. Mind you the programmes are so poor, maybe not!

Amazon goes after the corporate market

Amazon has announced that it would be making Redshift, its cloud-based data warehousing service, widely available, after first launching the product in November last year, The product, part of Amazon Enterprise Web Services, aimed both at startups who are looking for cost-effective ways of storing data for their new services, as well as larger or more established enterprises that want to cut operational costs, and possibly capex as well.

Amazon also announced a number of third parties — including SAP, Cognizant, IBM, Informatica, Tableau, Attunity, Actuate, Pentaho, Talend, Birst, Roambi and Pervasive.

Amazon seems to have hooks in many fires at present. This seems like a good strategic move

Sena iPhone 5 Walletslim case

Sena Cases have released the walletslim for the iPhone 5. I received the dark brown leather colour and its gorgeous. You have 3 slots on the back, which allow for 2 credit cards, and 3 of something slimmer. Ideal if you don’t want to take your wallet out. The case costs around £35. They also do another version with a front flip and with or without the wallet part.

I have around 30 cases for the iPhone 5 and this is my favourite since it adds to the look of the phone. It is also useful.

I would comment that my past experiences of Sena Cases haven’t been glowing. I found that whilst the leather was excellent, the lining up of the cutouts was sloppy. Not so here though.
