Microsoft releases sales figures for Windows 8 and Skydrive

Microsoft CMO/CFO Tami Reller stated that it “recently” sold its 100 millionth Windows 8 license since the OS launched in October, which averages about 10 million units a month between its January stats update and today. It does show adoption hasn’t picked up again since the initial dropoff.

With regards to its Windows Store, downloads of both free and paid apps increased from 100 million in January to 250 million.

Microsoft’s file storage Skydrive celebrated its 250 millionth user recently.

Microsoft all mentioned is Windows Blue update would arrive before the end of the year.

Whilst the figures aren’t rocketing forward, there is signs that Windows 8 is continuing to gain some traction. Difference is that competition has never been so fierce.

Bill Gates – iPad users are frustrated

The iPad has the highest customer satisfaction ratings of any tablet in the world, but Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates thinks that many of its users are “frustrated” because it doesn’t come with a physical keyboard and it lacks access to Microsoft Office. Business Insider reports that Gates, while being interviewed on CNBC on Monday, said that a lot of iPad users “are frustrated, they can’t type, they can’t create documents, they don’t have Office there.” As an alternative, Gates plugged Microsoft’s own Surface Tablet.

Sadly, many iPad users are clearly not frustrated. And once upon a time lack of office editing would have been an issue. But there are many third party apps available now that provide office docs and editing. Then there are alternative cloud solutions like Google Docs.

I think the Surface Tablet is a good idea, but it just might be too late into the game.

Amazon secures new market in China ahead of Google

Amazon has become the first Western technology firm to offer paid-for Android apps in China – beating Google. Google’s Chinese store only offers free apps.

Amazon’s move paves the way for it to launch its Kindle e-reader devices in the country. As well as curating existing apps, Amazon said it will work with local developers to create programs specifically for local users.

Compared to its dominant position in other countries such as the US and UK, Amazon controlled less than 3% of China’s massive 169bn yuan (£17.6bn) business-to-consumer e-commerce market in the fourth quarter last year. This move by Amazon was a cracking decision and might prove troublesome for Google in later years.

Will Samsung release another phone this week? Oh but it did the Galaxy Core

Hot on the heels of the Galaxy S4 comes the Galaxy Core. Do we really care though! This will be one of a million new Galaxy variations. Well this is the spec, if you’re interested.

The Galaxy Core is a 4.3-inch WVGA handset offering a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage and a microSD slot. Running Touchwiz/Jelly Bean, the phone has a 5-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and a VGA front camera. Galaxy-style software features like Motion UI, Smart Stay, Smart Alert and S Voice. Dual SIM will be an option too.

Why can’t Samsung make this size of phone but with S4 specs? Then we would have a true iPhone competitor.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 strengths

The Samsung S4 has now been released for nearly 2 weeks on a global scale. Despite a few shortcomings discussed yesterday around available memory on the 16gb version, it does have many strengths.

Whilst it is made of polycarbonate, it actually doesn’t look too bad. In fact, it’s non offensive styling does have a little charm about it. It also feels more comfy to hold in the hand, more so that the HTC One. It is also lighter than the HTC One, and feels better weighted in the hand.

If you don’t have many large apps or games, but do have a large music collection and or take tons of photos you are able to use a micro SD card, up to 64gb. That’s a lot of music and photos. As the memory card is optional, you could carry a spare should you need even more space. Another big positive for the S4 is the removable battery. It is a lot easier to slip a spare battery in your wallet or purse when travelling, or a few years down the line, it becomes a simple task to change the failing battery. In other words, this device has potentially a longer life span.

The camera. Having spent the weekend with the S4, I have been very pleased with the photos of landscapes and scenery. It has been perfect sunny weather for taking photos. The camera has many options, but the feature I like the most is being able to use your voice to activate the shutter.
Panoramic shots were stunning too. Landscapes were of better quality than the HTC One.

Samsung have included tons of software and whilst its bloated with it, some of it is useful. Also if you sign in to Samsung’s own hub, you will find even more freebies.

Gestures. There are so many it’s crazy. I found they don’t all work properly all the time but I did like some of them. I was using concrete and able to operate the S4 without getting concrete on to it by swiping my hands and using my finger in air view.

Early days on battery, so no conclusion yet.

The S4 did feel glitchy at times, but then I remembered when I got the S3 it was the same. After 4 months the S3 had been updated a lot by Samsung and worked a treat.

The S Cover flip case is so cool. I may keep the S4 just so I can use the case. There are also numerous other accessories that Samsung are launching for this phone. It really has potential.

My overall views so far is it appears Samsung rushed the S4 to market. Once it had several software updates it ill be a class act. But I still prefer the HTC One.

Samsung’s defends the 16gb S4’s 8gb of usable memory – it’s insulting

Samsung explained to CNET that it was okay to deceive buyers of its 16gb S4 that it only came with 8gb of usable memory, since it had a micro sd slot for expansion.

Samsung added, “For the Galaxy S4 16GB model, approximately 6.85GB occupies [the] system part of internal memory, which is 1GB bigger than that of the Galaxy S3, in order to provide [a] high resolution display and more powerful features to our consumers.”

So why not warn people prior to purchase and also explain that apps and games can only be saved in to the internal memory!

And it appears Samsung are only responding after a backlash of angry customers has started. It also doesn’t help that mobile phone companies are informing customers that the memory is expandable and that apps or games can be installed on to the memory card. This information is totally inaccurate.

I think Samsung’s response borders on the brink of arrogance and one must ask the question why on earth did the 16gb version ever get released for sale. Samsung should have offered on the 32gb or 64gb versions and then none of this lack of memory would have arisen.

The larger capacity models can’t come quick enough!

Google Nexus 5 smartphone

Google I/O conference is only a few weeks away now. Whilst this is a developer conference, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if the Nexus 4 receives an update. They same should occur for their 7 and 10 tablets.

So Google announces the Nexus 5, a reasonable increase in specs to the great value Nexus 4. So here’s the first question. Would you buy one?

Next up. Will Google be able to cope with the demand, be able to offer a decent customer service or will it be as dreadful as it was last year. I pre ordered from Google previously and I vowed after receiving such dreadful customer service never to order another piece of hardware from the company.

So will they cope?

Or will the pre ordering and customer service totally crumble?

Sorry you just can’t beat the Apple after sales experience

There’s a debate going on whether android is better than iOS , the iPhone better than the Samsung or HTC. But one debate not open for debate is Apple’s after sales service. It is a very strong reason to buy Apple.

Over the weekend, I visited the Apple Plymouth store in the UK. I had a genius appointment. My iPad Mini had a few issues, one of which was intermittent. Well, it was the friendliest visit to any store that I can recall, having a general chit chat. A brief look at the Mini, and then a swap for a new one. Hang on, that was 5 mins 10 seconds. There was no enforcing my consumer rights. No nothing. All jolly and friendly.

We then had a chat about the new store, and then I was asked would I like to work there. Apparently, it is a great place to work. Only problem would be that I would buy the entire store’s stock.

Now, some might say this was a one off. But it’s not. A few years ago my MacBook trackpad failed. It was replaced in the Apple Exeter store in 15 mins. My wife’s Nano power button failed one month out of warranty. Not only did Apple replace it with a brand new Nano, my wife was allowed to choose any colour.

Any all the above without any fuss. Seriously, who does after sales service this good.
