Here comes the Samsung Galaxy Alpha – A metal phone to take on the iPhone 6 – photos

Sammobile (www.sammobile.com) have obtained exclusive photos of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. This is Samsung’s metallic framed phone, produced to take on the new 4.7 iPhone head to head. The Alpha is also 4.7 inched screened phone. So it really is game on. The Alpha will feature a nano sim card , the same as the iPhone. It will also take it design language from the Samsung Galaxy S5. It will come with 32gb storage but no memory card slot.

I still think people will buy an iPhone. The Apple brand is more desirable as Apple only produce one new phone (or two) a year whereas Samsung produce a multitude.

iPhone 6 rumoured to have a 1810mAh battery – please let these be untrue

Many tech websites are running with a rumour that the new iPhone will have an increased battery to 1810mAh.

I really hope this is not true or there are some software surprises.

With all the social networking and background services that iOS 8 brings to the table, surely a larger size battery is needed. I sold my 5S due to battery life being dreadful.

We can only hope that iOS 8 is frugal on the battery, but in my mind, if you are playing a game you need juice and for a decent amount of time. Of course, Apple may reinvent the charge process and the new screen acts as a solar panel as well. Now that would be slick.

Apple goes in partnership with IBM – thoughts

Apple announced that it’s partnering with IBM to “transform enterprise mobility through a new class of business apps.” The relationship will combine IBM’s enterprise data specialties with Apple’s iOS hardware and software.

“iPhone and iPad are the best mobile devices in the world and have transformed the way people work with over 98 percent of the Fortune 500 and over 92 percent of the Global 500 using iOS devices in their business today,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement. “For the first time ever we’re putting IBM’s renowned big data analytics at iOS users’ fingertips, which opens up a large market opportunity for Apple. This is a radical step for enterprise and something that only Apple and IBM can deliver.”

Apple already has huge in roads into the business sector, and with iOS 8 arriving in September and this announcement with IBM, it looks like Apple is heading for another pot of gold.

Apple’s “It just Works” – A Load of Nonsense

I used to love my Apple products, from my first iPhone, the iPhone 4, iPad, Mac, iPod Touch and Classic, all seemingly working in harmony. And then there was the bounty of apps and great games. In app purchases did not exist.

Move forward to 2013 and 2014 and Apple devices are more complex in features, which in turn means there is more things to go wrong. My iPhone 5 for example would losse reception, never to reappear unless the phone was rebooted. My iPad Air battery life recently fell by 50%. And this is the tip of the iceberg.

Roll forward to the current time, and I was wondering why my parents iPhones and iPads weren’t allowing FaceTime or iMessages. My dad had everything configured correctly and my mum had somehow had all the settings for iMessage and Facetime switched off. She had no idea how that had happened. Anyway, with both parents on the same network, and everything all on, my mum could still not send my dad an iMessage. It kept going to send the text as an SMS. I advised them in many different ways, but in the end “it just didn’t work”.

The cure was for my dad to send an iMessage to my mum. And then for her to reply to that message. Somehow that corrected everything.

Regardless of the issues, Apple still have the best eco system and still manufacture some of the most desirable hardware. Lets hope iOS 8 improves matters and that the new iPhone has a long battery life.

Apple loses patent case

BEIJING (Reuters) – A Beijing court has ruled against Apple Inc (AAPL.O) by upholding the validity of a patent held by a Chinese company, clearing the way for the Chinese company to continue its own case against Apple for infringing intellectual property rights.

Apple had taken Shanghai-based Zhizhen Internet Technology and China’s State Intellectual Property Office to court to seek a ruling that Zhizhen’s patent rights to a speech recognition technology were invalid.

But the Beijing First Intermediate Court on Tuesday decided in Zhizhen’s favor, the People’s Daily state newspaper reported on Wednesday.

After the verdict, Apple said it intended to take the case to the Beijing Higher People’s Court, according to the People’s Daily.

“Unfortunately, we were not aware of Zhizhen’s patent before we introduced Siri (speech recognition technology) and we do not believe we are using this patent,” said a Beijing-based Apple spokeswoman in an emailed statement to Reuters.

“While a separate court considers this question, we remain open to reasonable discussions with Zhizhen,” the spokeswoman said.

Zhizhen declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

Zhizhen sued the U.S. firm in 2012 for intellectual property rights infringement, saying Apple’s Siri used on devices including the iPhone violated Zhizhen’s own voice system patents.

Flying then make sure your phone/tablet or laptop is charged – or face the consequences

Via the Telegraph – http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/terrorism-in-the-uk/10950196/Mobiles-could-be-barred-from-flights-if-not-charged.html

“Mobile phones and laptops will be banned from planes heading for the US if they are not charged up, amid heightened fears of an imminent terrorist attack.
Travellers will have to turn on their gadgets at the security gate to prove they are real, after the American government warned electronic devices could be used to conceal bombs.
The move comes as airport security in the UK, America and other countries is ramped up amid concerns that al-Qaeda extremists based in Yemen plan to use British and other Western jihadists fighting in Syria and Iraq as suicide bombers.
Laptops, tablet computers and other electronic devices will also be banned from planes if they cannot be turned on.

US officials have singled out smartphones including iPhones made by Apple Inc and Galaxy phones made by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd for extra security checks on US-bound direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.”

Safer not to fly!

Do we need flagship phones anymore ?

Having spent just over a month with the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom, it has made me wonder if we really need flagships. Why you may ask? Well the K Zoom is a camera centric smartphone but with only 8gb storage (4.6gb free to user) and a mediocre processor versus a flagship phone which will have the latest snapdragon 801 processor or higher. A flagship will also have bells and whistles features and more storage.

But with the android operating system being designed to work with low cost hardware, you can buy phones like the Moto E for under £99 and still get a reasonable experience. The K Zoom is a mid range device and like its cheaper alternatives still performs fairly well. In fact, in many ways it outperforms it’s more expensive flagships.

The other issue with flagship phones is the huge depreciation. If you spend less you don’t lose as much.

So really, if you want the latest and greatest, the extra £200 plus premium , really is a premium charge.

Sometimes though we buy new devices without any consideration for the above – we just want the best.
