The Experiment – Using iOS / Apple Exclusively

As each year passes the respective mobile operating companies like Amazon, Google and Apple are trying to push you further and further towards their own offerings. It is becoming clear that at some point in the future you may be forced to make a decision.

So over the next few months I’m going to try using first up Apple and iOS exclusively and then I’ll do the same experiment with Google and android.

So firstly I moved all my pim information into the iCloud and switched my email too. Then I looked at all the iCloud settings and turned everything on from bookmarks, notes, documents, photos, photostream, apps, movies and books. I also turned on iMessage and FaceTime.

So what did all this mean. Welll what I found was no matter what I was on using, (Mac, iPad, iPhone or Apple TV) everything was synced across all the devices without any effort. Also I was able to make a face time call from any device and make that to any other type of device at the other end. In addition with iMessage I could either use my iPhone or iPad to send a text message to another iPhone user. If I took a photo on the iPad or iPhone it would appear on all the other devices with no intervention from myself. It would also be sorted in month order as well on iPhoto on the Mac. If I bought any media (music film app) it would download and install on any of my devices. If I saved a new bookmark on my iPhone that same bookmark would be on my iPad and Mac. If I created a new calendar, contact or a note, again this would be synced across any device. In fact what I’m finding is the Apple syncing and management between all the devices is extraordinarily simple and fantastic to experience.

No wonder people find it difficult to change for one operating system to another.

iPad Mini or Nexus 7 or Kindle HD – which tablet is the new threat

Before I start I have deliberately left out the Microsoft tablet. It wasn’t in any stores and therefore nobody was buying it. In fact nobody is buying it online either.

So there are was shopping in Plymouth, Devon yesterday. It has a superb selection of mobile and technology shops. You can buy all the above tablets with ease.

I spent time playing with each, as you do if you like technology, but also seemed to become a salesperson whilst in the stores helping people of all ages.

Whilst the iPad well actually the iPad Mini draw crowds, the real surprise came from another tablet. And it wasn’t the Nexus 7. The one tablet that was buzzing through the tills was the Kindle Fire HD.

Now I spoke to several people to find out why the Kindle. Like Apple has brand recognition, so does Amazon. And Amazon was more popular than Google’s Nexus 7 tablet.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Amazon eventually overtake Google and even Apple in 2-3 years time.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 – Why I Didn’t Buy One

Yesterday I went shopping specifically to buy a Note 2. It’s uniqueness has been rattling my door for a while, and the decision to buy was becoming more and more swayed by hearing my gadget friends had got one for Christmas.

So, I went into several mobile phone stores and to my surprise I found the Note 2 had standalone tables with several units available to play with in several of the mobile phone shops. So once again I had a good play with the device and found I really loved the big screen and the accuracy of the S pen.

I even found a good price in one of the phone shops and they had the titanium grey colour in stock. But I just couldn’t make myself buy it. I kept looking at my iPhone 5 and thinking how compact it looked and how useful iOS 6 and the Apple ecosystem really was. By moving to the Note, I would lose the Apple synchronisation between every Apple device, but I was going to the gain the android operating system benefits. I would also lose some applications that are only available on iOS and also some of the great games that just seem to work so much better on the iPhone.

I decided to have a think about it and went for a browse in all the gadget type shops. I realised that for the same price as the Samsung Notes 2, I could buy a DLSR camera, a kindle paperwhite, and a speaker system. That made me realise that actually I was way better keeping the iPhone 5 and passing this time on the Samsung.

Reflecting on what happened today it made me realise actually what I actually like is a 5 inch iPhone. Apple if you haven’t read my blog please do so, then please make a 5 inch iPhone. If you have any views on this please post them in the comments. Did you do think Apple should make a 5 inch iPhone?

iOS App Christmas Downloads

Distimo released its statistics on Christmas Day app downloads / revenue growth. In 2011, Christmas Day iOS app download volume spiked 230% above the December average. This year, the increase was just 87%, well below industry expectations. The revenue spike came in at 70%.

However, iPad downloads increased by 140% this Christmas, suggesting that the iPhone download bounce was really small.

The Smartphones of 2013 – What to Expect

2013 is only a few days away and rumours and leaks of new devices have already hit the web.

My thoughts on what we can expect to see in 2013 are thinner, faster, and better finished devices. The cameras will all be bumped up in value to around 13mp. NFC will be presenting nearly all devices. Software regardless of platform will receive more polish. The smartphone of 2013 will nearly perfection in terms of hardware and software integration.

So are we looking at hardware going stale where innovation is not viable or possible. Maybe. But there is hope that Samsung’s bendable screens might make an appearance, maybe in the S4 or Note 3. The bendable aspect is clever, but more importantly the screens are meant to be unbreakable. Or virtually. Now that would be useful. Apple could look at utilising liquid metal more than just the sim ejector tool and make a unibody phone. That won’t happen until after the 5S. Part of me wonders if Apple will move to 2 handsets in 2013 but that’s never happened before. Perhaps Apple will offer a range of colours for the iPhone making it more of a fashion accessory. RIM’s new BB10 handsets will arrive. I’m sure they will be ok maybe even great. But whose going to buy them.

So with tough bendable screens a possibility, the next innovation needs to arrive in battery life. If any company can make a slim phone with a week long battery duration this would be a killer feature.

And then we move out of phones and into smart glasses and watches. Just imagine out shopping with the wife, but instead of being bored, you are actually watching Die Hard 90 through your glasses. Maybe that’s 2014. What do you think?

My Top 10 iPhone Apps – What are Yours?

Below are my top apps, games will be covered tomorrow, that I use on my iPhone. In no particular order –

1) Tweetbot – simply the best twitter client. Even better if you have an iPad as the devices stay in sync so you don’t need to re read tweets. The official twitter app is ok, but Tweetbot is far more polished

2) Reeder – this is a brilliant RSS app. It has a lovely interface and just works beautifully.

3) Podcasts – this is Apple’s own app. It works fine for me, and stays in sync with the iPad too. I love the graphics or the reel to reel tape moving when listening to a podcast.

4) Logmein – the free version allows you to remotely access your PC or Mac. It does exactly what it says on the tin. There are so paid options if you need file transfer or more, but in my case that is not needed.

5) Sony Remote app – using wifi, this app remote controls my Sony TV. It can control other Sony
devices too. Best part is that you do not need to aim at the TV. Ideal when my dogs are in the way of the IR sensor.

6) WordPress – the official WordPress app is excellent for maintaining your WordPress blog. I use it on the iPad Mini and iPhone. All posts are done on these devices

7) Flightradar24 Pro – this is a universal app. I tried the free version, but was so impressed bought the full version and some of the in app purchases. This app provides a view of all the planes flying on the sky anywhere in the world. If a plane is flying overhead aim the phone at it and the app tells you all about the plane, destination, flight number, route and more. You can even get notifications if a plane has problems. I have had 3 so far. Optional in app purchases include airport flight arrival board displays. Really polished app.

8) Pcalc – another universal app. This is my default calculator app. It looks so much better than the Builtin calculator and has the options to include many more themes and conversions. There is a free version with in app purchases but IMO well worth it as really lovely interface.

9) Dropbox – a must have app on every piece of hardware. The best way of saving, moving any file between devices across any operating system.

10) WeMo – This app remote controls my electrical sockets whilst I am in the house or out of the house. Awesome app. You do need to purchase the Belkin electrical socket adapters.

The above are my top 10 iPhone apps.

What are yours? Let everyone know in the comments.

In App Purchases – Time for Change

Before in app purchases arrived, you bought an app or game and that was the price you paid. Updates would arrive, sometimes adding some new features, but you knew where you stood on the financial front. Move forward a few years, and we now have in app purchases.

Well we actually have a greed driven in app purchase system and here is why –

1) Freemium – these games really make me sick. There are meant to be free to download and play, but they are certainly not free to play. In fact, these game cost to keep playing and will end up normally costing you the earth. What we need with these games is a range of estimates from the developer as to the true range of costs it would require to finish a game. Problem is with some freemium titles, you have to spend the same amount of money each time you play the game.

2) Games – some games cost money and have in app purchases but without buying these you cannot finish the game. These should be banned, or as above a note in the game description informer the buyer how much is needed in total to be spent to finish a game. Using in app purchases to add a substantial new levels, or purchase optional items that have no impact on the gameplay like a new outfit for your character are fine. What I have found is games bought for £3 are suddenly switched to a new financial model, like freemium or a heavy use of in app purchases. That’s wrong.

3) Apps – in app purchases can be used wisely whereby you get a fully functional app at a low cost, but to add some optional features costs a little bit more. This is fair and reasonable. Two examples of this done well is pcalc and flightradar24 pro.

I really think all the companies with app stores need to monitor abuses with the in app purchasing system. At the moment I believe it has killed off gaming apps due to the excessive use.
