ZTE is on a roll. Shortly after revealing more information about the ZTE Nubia Z5, hot of the press comes the 6.9mm Grand S. It also features a 5 inch screen and likely to feature every other top specification. But wow 6.9mm thin makes the iPhone so big.

In App Purchases – Time for Change
Before in app purchases arrived, you bought an app or game and that was the price you paid. Updates would arrive, sometimes adding some new features, but you knew where you stood on the financial front. Move forward a few years, and we now have in app purchases.
Well we actually have a greed driven in app purchase system and here is why –
1) Freemium – these games really make me sick. There are meant to be free to download and play, but they are certainly not free to play. In fact, these game cost to keep playing and will end up normally costing you the earth. What we need with these games is a range of estimates from the developer as to the true range of costs it would require to finish a game. Problem is with some freemium titles, you have to spend the same amount of money each time you play the game.
2) Games – some games cost money and have in app purchases but without buying these you cannot finish the game. These should be banned, or as above a note in the game description informer the buyer how much is needed in total to be spent to finish a game. Using in app purchases to add a substantial new levels, or purchase optional items that have no impact on the gameplay like a new outfit for your character are fine. What I have found is games bought for £3 are suddenly switched to a new financial model, like freemium or a heavy use of in app purchases. That’s wrong.
3) Apps – in app purchases can be used wisely whereby you get a fully functional app at a low cost, but to add some optional features costs a little bit more. This is fair and reasonable. Two examples of this done well is pcalc and flightradar24 pro.
I really think all the companies with app stores need to monitor abuses with the in app purchasing system. At the moment I believe it has killed off gaming apps due to the excessive use.

New Fancy Hardware is NOT the Future, Services ARE
Have you every looked at your new tablet or smartphone and been honest with yourself and said “it is not that much different from my last device”. What is normally different is that it is thinner, faster and has an overall specification bump. But it still does the same job. Advances in technology mean that over the last 2 years the changes in hardware have been very incremental. So what does this mean.
It means we are moving towards companies needing to provide a full blown range of services, and really focus on this. The hardware will always be available. But to survive they will need services.
In the next few years we might see companies like HTC and RIM go out of business. Meanwhile Google and Amazon will blossom. Why? Because their range of services in increasing to be the next big thing, the next I need this service more than I need the hardware. With Google they now have a decent online media store, streaming music option and they also provide search, maps and more types of services. Amazon has the worlds largest offering of anything online, and has now focused their efforts to make this available through themselves using services eg lovefilm and Amazon Cloud. They already have the user base, the cloud and logistics. Amazon IMO is the strongest service provider and the biggest threat to every other company including Google and Apple. Apple provide a number of services. Customer service, iTunes march, Siri and a unique Eco system, iTunes for online media, Apple TV and more. But Apple need more services to compete with its competitors. Amazon can sell you anything, Google now has Google shopper and is branching that way. Apple dominance as making the best looking gear is under threat, as all it takes is another competitor to make low cost competing hardware, but with a stronger range of services and Apple’s brand value will start to diminish.
The world as we know it is changing. Who will be the winners and who will be the losers. Time will tell over the next 18 months to 24 months.
Why Amazon made a Tablet before a Phone
It is no secret that Amazon are looking to rule the information technology space. A company that started as an online shopping experience, has moved into the cloud for itself and other customers, streaming music, films and TV shows and providing sales of books, music, films, and more either as a physical product or electronic download. Amazon even have their own AppStore for their tablets.
Next year there are strong rumours they will release their first smartphone. But why did they release a tablet first. Well lets think about this carefully. First up they had already an established ebook reader called the Kindle, so any new tablet would need to extend to using the Kindle name. Second, it is all about sales and making more money. People that had the original Kindle ebook readers, would use them to buy book and newspapers. They would spend money! So make a full blown tablet and call it a Kindle, and Amazon immediately would have two types of customers – existing ebook readers and new ones that would feel confident buying into the Amazon Kindle experience. Customers with a tablet are able to browse Amazon’s online stores and spend more money easier with a tablet. It’s a virtual shop in the palm of your hand. The other aspect of a tablet, it is more likely to be shared amongst other members of the family in the same household, so each piece of Kindle tablet hardware could end up having more users, which in turns equates to more sales per device.
This in turns means making more money with their tablets. If you look at a smartphones, these generally are used by one person and are not shared. However, Amazon will want to cover off all hardware options, to make sure as many people as possible can access their services and spend money, hence why next year will be the release of a smartphone. In the meantime, Amazon will knock out improved tablets to make accessing and using their full shopping and media experience easier and easier.

It’s War – Amazon & Google on a Collision Course in 2013
Reuters is reporting today that it is expecting 2013 to be war between Google and Amazon.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos got word of a project to scan and digitise product catalogues by Google a decade ago, and the seeds of a rivalry were planted. Bezos was an early investor in Google but he now realised Google had other plans and could encroach upon his online retail experience.
Move forward to 2013 and with both companies spanning online advertising, and retail to mobile gadgets and cloud computing, the big clash is about to happen. It could mark the end of any Google cooperation. Interesting times ahead.
Apps in the Cloud – The Dangers
If we look at the two main operating systems Google and Apple, they operate a model whereby your apps are stored in the cloud for you.
Google is totally setup this way, meaning that it’s not possible to have a local copy on your pc. Apple uses iTunes to store a copy on your pc but also offers it stored in the cloud. With iPhones now you can select not to use a pc and just work using the cloud.
With my android and Apple devices I have encountered situations whereby the app I want to download doesn’t exist anymore. Fortunately with my iPhone I waa able still sync to iTunes on a pc so I was able to reinstall a particular app not available any more. I wasn’t so lucky with my android phone. I would have also been in trouble if I had just synced my iPhone in the cloud. As once the app disappears from the respective app stores, that’s it.
Maybe the cloud storage needs better backups. Also what happens if the cloud gets hacked and your music is deleted?
Huawei Ascend Mate 6.1 inch phone – Irony
Not to be outdone by the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Huawei are releasing the Ascend Mate, a 6.1 inch phone. What’s ironic is a Huawei executive briefly showed his and was illustrating how small it really is despite its size. The moment was caught on YouTube – try not to laugh at the film playing on the screen.
Seriously, this is not a phone or tablet or phablet. It’s ridiculous.
