MWC – 25th Feb Roundup of News

Below is a summary of the key headlines from MWC today.

– Nokia releases 2 new window 8 phones, the Lumia 520 and 720. Clearly aim at the budget market and also to try and regain control from Samsung. Apple’s iPhone is King – Face the Facts

Apple sold 27.4million iPhone 5s and 17.4million 4S handsets in Q4.

That compared to sales of just 15.4million for Samsung’s Galaxy SIII.

Comes as Steve Wozniak warns Apple is losing ‘cool guy’ status.

On a recent train journey into London I counted 80% of people had iPhones. I only saw 2 Samsung S3 and 2 Blackberry’s. Whilst in UCL Hospital I only saw iPhones. And 1 cheap Nokia.

I didn’t see any Samsung Notes.

So there are the official stats and the unscientific observations. All come to the same conclusion. The iPhone is king.

Huawei Ascend P2 details

The Ascend P2 will have a 4.7-inch 720p (1280 x 720) Infinity Edge display at 315ppi, a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 13 MP BSI rear-facing camera with HDR, a 1.3 MP front-facing camera, 2,420 mAh battery, and Android 4.1. It comes in at 8.4mm thick and is touted as the fastest LTE phone on earth with up to 150Mbps utilizing LTE Cat4. Just like all Huwaei phones, it will feature their own Emotion UI on top of stock Android.

Certainly looks rather nice.

Sound & Vision Show – Part 1

I visited the Sound & Vision show on Friday. There were several hundred brands being exhibited, many out of my price range but nonetheless some really interesting gear.

The show covered audio and visual gear, and was spread over the Marriott Bristol from the Ground Floor, Terrace, Bedrooms Levels 1-10.

As you first walked in I was struck by several exhibitors selling vinyl and seeing turntables being sold like the one being displaged

There was also plenty of black boxes all with fancy price tags, all of which was meant to be excellent value for your money. Black box shown below of a Unitilite all in one player.

What was really handy at the show was the show app. It meant you could find what you wanted, learn about what each exhibitors was showing and a lot more.

For today I just leave you with a photo of these PerfectSound headphones. Yours for $700. And in case you’re wondering they were not the most expensive. On display were the Audeze LC2 at £4,000. They sounded wonderful but what a hole they would leave in your bank balance.

Tomorrow I will add the second part, where we start to up the price and look of the gear. And on Friday there will be a photo of a setup costing over £250,000. That’s right more than most people’s houses.

MWC Samsung press release

With MWC upon us expect many press releases. Samsung is trying to hit the headlines and is setting up to launch a new service at MWC called “TV Discovery”, to help users find video and live TV content with their devices. Similarly to what HTC just announced with its own TV offerings on the One, Samsung will use its service to aggregate content from multiple sources to be streamed to your devices. The content will be available on Samsung’s Smart TV’s and “supported mobile devices”, but no specifics were given. Similarly to what Samsung is already doing with its Peel partnership, devices will be able to be used as a universal remote control as well.

Samsung says that at the launch, the TV Discovery service will aggregate from Netflix and Blockbuster in the U.S. and Acetrax, Wuaki, MovieMax, FilmIn, Chili, Pathé and SF Anytime in Europe. Youtube is also a source.

I wonder if this will give us a clue to what the new S4 might offer.

HP is back with an android tablet

HP’s back in the tablet game in Barcelona with the new Slate 7, a Jelly Bean 1.6GHz dual-core ARM processor, a seven-inch display, plus front and rear facing cameras and built-in Beats Audio. The device’s biggest selling point is the $169 starting price. The Slate 7’s due out in April.

There are so many cheap android tablets out there, I just don’t see how they all can compete. There is no real USP other than price. The other day I nearly bought a 10 inch tablet whilst out shopping for £60. I didn’t because I didn’t need it. Plus it was cheaply built and wouldn’t last.

Mozilla Firefox OS debuts

Mobile World Congress news is pouring out. Firefox OS has been demoed by Alcatel and a few others. The phones are mid range affairs and lack apps at the moment. I just can’t understand where this OS is going to be effective.

With Apple, Google, Amazon, Blackberry and Microsoft and not forgetting Tizen, surely this OS is too late to stand a chance.
