Garmin’s $600 Fenix 3 Sapphire Smart Watch – will this watch steal Apple’s crown ?

image

Garmin have just launched the Fenix 3 Sapphire sport watch at CES and boldly stated they do not fear the upcoming Apple Watch.

The watch is a multi sport fitness watch with trackers, gps, displays notifications,  water resistant to 100 metres, includes sensors for altimeter , barometer, and a compass. It also has functions for alarms, stopwatch and similar actions. Battery life varies from 16 hours if using the gps to 50 hours.

Personally I like this type of watch. Limited functionality but stylish. But will it sell. That is a different story.

  1. Interesting product. But is it likely to be a bit?

One the one hand, the aesthetics are decent, so the device can be fairly innocuous on the wrist compared to smart watches as well the Suunto type of traditional sports watches.

However, the battery life is of course never going to be anywhere near 50 hours, since the watch becomes of little or no use as a tracker if you turn off the GPS. With the GPS on, they are claiming 15 hours, and we know how that will turn out.

So all in all we have here a specialist tracker watch…..that cannot track you for your full waking hours. As per the manufacturer’s own specs

That starts to raise some alarrn bells in my mind about the prospects for this thing.
