Why are there such shortages on new phones?

Samsung Note 4, Nexus 6 and other phones and smart watches all claimed to have been released. In fact, Samsung claimed to have shifted 4.5m Note 4 phones in the first month. Nexus 6 went on sale and supposedly sold out in minutes. Maybe only 10 phones were in stock at the warehouse.

So what is going on. Forums are alight with grieving users. Quite simply, either the phone production was sufficient from day one. Or there has been a manufacturing issue. Or Apple has hogged all the transit and cargo space for its new iPhones.

So what do you think ?

  1. As usual there is fact and fiction. Samsung for example decided to sell in more countries in the first month than they did for the Note 3. Market for smartphones increases by a significant amount each year. Please also remember not all devices are made in China and therefore transport is not the main issue or bottleneck for shortages.

  2. Well if Apple have hogged the supply chain they haven’t made a very good job of it in the shops.
This morning was the first time ‘ever’ I have seen any 128GB iPhone 6 Plus’s in numbers….. and that small batch won’t last long either.

      1. Not yet Gavin.
I have been checking the stock levels every morning just after midnight.
This morning is the first time my local store (about an hours drive if lucky) has shown stock for the 128GB 6 Plus and would you believe it I can not get there til next week.
I ordered mine online on the 15 Oct so have another 2-3 weeks officially to wait.
I’ll try again with the stores next week but it’s a heck of a way out of my way and time is so precious for other more important matters.

Thanks for the heads up on the case, I’ve been in a mixed mood as to which one to get.

  3. I do not have the real reason behind it, but being sat on stock can be costly and I believe many miscalculate the real demand. By the time they realise they need more its too late as production takes 6-8 weeks often. Also apparent shortages builds comms and interest on a product, normally for the better.

I do believe too that there is a planned launch date and to not miss that they get some stock out when in all reality the launch date needed to be pushed back because not enough stock was available in the first place. The Nexus 6 is a prime example. UK launch has been pushed back and the US begun taking pre-orders but sold so quickly as they had so few.

  4. But it is surprising that when Apple claim to be selling record numbers of iPhones that Android high end devices are also in short supply. As I said, we can’t exclude the factor of growing market and therefore more demand.
