So what is your ‘gut’ reaction Gavin, are you happy with it?
I withheld from installing version 8 on one of my iPads as it screwed up the other.
iOS8.1 however does appear to have sorted out the Wifi issue on the iPad that was updated to the initial release of v8, so I am looking to put 8.1 on both then wait for the 6+ to arrive to make using both the iPad and iMac more productive.
I had a bit of a nightmare upgrading from 8.02 to 8.1 but finally got it installed. Now it’s up and running everything seems good. I haven’t had any issues so far.
I got a message about the iOS 8.1 update on my iPad but it said it neeeded 1.6gb of space, which I didn’t have, so I decided to go the iTunes route. It downloaded the latest iOS update, rebooted my iPad and it bombed out. Said the update could not be installed and gave some obscure error number. ‘Click here to find out more,’ it said, but the Apple page didn’t make any sense. Then iTunes told me that my iPad was in recovery mode and must be updated or restored. I tried both and both failed. I was stuck with an iPad in recovery mode.
I then had to figure out how to get out of recovery mode. I’m sure there must be a simple way to do this. In the end I downloaded a program called Tiny Umbrella and I was back at square one. This time I thought I’d try the on-device update so I unsynced my photos to make space. Update went well. Then I resynced the photos, except half of them didn’t sync back. Tried it 3 times with same result. Further web searching and I ended up deleting the photo cache, resynching and everything was now fine.
The whole process took me hours. I think less tech-savvy people would either have given up or gone to the Apple store.

The update does need a lot of headroom to install over its actual size. Glad it got sorted.
