TV and Film Streaming Services

Currently, I subscribe to Netflix. I also have Amazon Prime membership which provides access to Amazon Instant Video. Netflix is obtained via my Apple TV box and Amazon directly via my TV internet menu option.

After paying the annual fee for Amazon Prime my plan was to ditch Netflix, but this is proving impossible for several reasons.

Firstly, the user interface with Prime on my TV is awful. I have to enter the film or TV show using the simple TV remote. This takes ages. Also, I find operating around Amazon’s Instant Video cumbersome and difficult. Amazon seem to mix the free films with the paid options.

So what does Netflix do better. Well everything in my book. If you are watching a TV series, it automatically starts playing the next episode when you reach the end of the one you are viewing. Then after watching 3 in a row, before it continues automatically, a message pops up asking if you are still watching. This way, if you fall asleep in front of the TV you won’t be watching the entire season in any nightmares. Or dreams if you’re lucky.

On top of that I find there is more to watch on Netflix.

I have tried Blinkbox and do occasionally use my iTunes UK account. I also have an iTunes US account for content not available in the UK.

So what services do you use and why?

  1. I agree Netflix has better choice but Amazon Prime is free so use that; I paid the old price one month before the increase so good value for now.

  2. BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 CH4 CH5 and boy am I annoyed the BBC may close down BBC3.

Whilst I have great admiration for technology and the services it brings, when it comes to TV the brain interest quickly fadeszzzzzzz.

My family believing they know my interests better pestered me to have SkyTV as it would broaden my knowledge with all the documentaries available.
“Err, I’m 61. I’ve travelled most the world, done and achieved many a thing and broadened my knowledge with what life has thrown back at me. If I want a debateor learn something I’ll use the knowledge of life or my other mate Google”!
Nope, my younger family members knew better, as they always keep telling me.
So I had Sky installed but quickly realised I was watching repeat after repeat with most originating from incorrect badly scripted American origins. That and sitting in front of the mind control box for a few hours was indubitably tedious.
As such I quickly reverted back to doing the things in and out of the house that gave me more stimulation and gratification.

So now I am told ~ because I do not watch TV it is I whom is narrowing the mind.
As my beautiful family keep telling me “We are all in agreement Dad, so obviously greater numbers mean we know what’s better for you”.
Nah…. Greater numbers simply means opinionated voices. Show me the proof and I’ll listen, until then be quiet and listen to your Dad!

  3. There’s a few exclusive TV shows (OITNB, HoC, Vikings et al) on each I’ve enjoyed, probably more on Netflix and a lot of catch up on things I’ve missed at TV airing. For films Amazon’s library is a little better although Sky’s Now TV catalogue looks better still. I was already a Prime subscriber so their service was a free addition in a way for me. When my year is up in November the increased fee will have me thinking twice about re-subscribing as I’m running low of content on my watch list. Netflix flexibility wins over here.

I’d be really interested to see a comparison of how each service performance across various devices. There seems to be significant variation from device to device, service to service; or at least that’s my experience. Sky’s service, live streams in particular, has been dreadful on each occasion I’ve tried.
