Samsung Galaxy K Zoom – battery tips

I know some of you are having some battery issues with the K Zoom. So the obvious solution is turn it off.

No seriously there are a few things you can do which will help.

1) Turn off S-Voice from settings and make sure it is unmapped from home button and all listening modes.

2) Don’t forget to setup the power saving mode and the ultra power saving mode. Best to do it now, and not when needed. Also, after using ultra saving power mode, I find it best to soft reset phone. I only use ultra power saving mode, and when phone is at 5%. It would be handy if this happened automatically.

3) Network bands – I’ve restricted my K Zoom to 3G mode only. Handy as I’m with Three UK. That’s WCDMA. If you are not with 3, then don’t have have LTE selected as it drains the battery fast. If you need LTE for any reason, turn it on and then off again when finished. Choose another mode eg GSM/WCDMA.

4) Bluetooth and wifi. Keep Bluetooth off when not needed. Wifi doesn’t impact that much if left on.

5) Tap left soft key for running apps. Close all on a regular basis, minimum daily.

6) If the phone feels hot, battery fades too. So soft reset it. This re regulates the phone. Clearly a bug fix needed here.

7) If you have used GPS, turn back location services to power saving mode or off. High mode for location services will drain battery faster.

8) I have push email running for one gmail account. You can restrict frequency but again it’s up to you.

9) Soft reset phone daily. You should not have to do this, but it’s the one clear way to ensure smooth operation.

10) Use Nova or Apex Launcher but with a max of 2 home screens.

Clearly, the K Zoom needs a software update, but once you’ve tweaked it to get a better battery life, then you just accept its weaknesses as there is no other phone with a 10 x optical zoom. And in all honesty, whilst I wish I didn’t have to soft reset as much it’s no deal breaker.

  1. Actually there is another Android 10 x optical zoom Gavin…… well, sort of so to speak.
It’s the Sony ‘clip on lens’ which you bought…. but yes I get what you say.

On that, did you get rid of your Q lens Gavin?
It would have been interesting to see where the pros & cons of each would have been at use:-

Is it better to go for the ‘all-in-one’ K Zoom that makes it easier to operate and put away but you are then restricted to the phone for daily use.
Or do you go for the Sony QX10 and any phone which means you are not tied to the one phone and can either have the lens on the phone or put to one side, at the expense of carrying it around would be slightly less convenient.

  2. First opinions on the K Zoom…… Unlike your good self Gavin I am not so positive.
As you mentioned in the previous blog, the battery doesn’t cut it. I’m fed up having to be cautious here and there, checking what I do and don’t is tedious.
Whilst shots are clear and the zoom is great in reality I’ve noticed of the shots taken hardly were with using zoom which then begs the question “why did I get it”.
However, I know it’s a good phone camera and I’ll keep it and use it that is for sure but to be frank I know I will get a lot more use out of the G3 as a main phone/camera.

      1. Yes, it arrived Monday of this week. I got round to setting it up on Wed and so far I am having a blast and to be fair means the K Zoom is being pushed to one side.
Anyway, what has been interesting is LG have not locked down ANY of the camera functions.
Unlike Sony who locked out ISO to camera apps Camera FV-5 and A Better Camera, LG on the other hand left all of them Open.
This means by using A Better Camera (my app of choice) you can select any manual setting you like…. and yes ISO does actually work.

As a general use smartphone, so far it is leaving the Z2 in the dust but that could simply be it’s newness and THAT GORGEOUS SCREEN.
Quite a few complain about the screen brightness but I find I rarely push it beyond 60% and the sound….. Well it’s no Boom Box granted but it’s definitely loud. I would say base is slightly lacking but it is clear the 1Amp speaker does it’s job.

      2. That’s good news. Might have one soon but was concerned about lack of camera options. When you have a 2K screen versus KZ 720p side by side it’s an unfair advantage šŸ™‚

  3. All I can say is you will not regret it.
I thought I would miss having a dedicated camera button and not able to shoot out in the rain but it’s surprising how quick you go back to the methods used before the Sony Z1 and 2.
And again ~ that screen….. It’s clear, sharp, bright when needed and BIG. Not just in length but it’s wider too and very similar to the first Galaxy Note only bigger in screen size.
BUT………. it fits in the hand just right.
