Battery life – the science behind decent battery life

At the moment there is no secret formula as battery technology has not kept up with progress in other areas of smartphone development.

So basically if you want decent battery life you need to do what Huawei did with their new Ascend Mate 2 and stuck a 4,050maH battery inside. This was possible as the phone is a Phablet with a 6.1 inch screen. So it’s huge and therefore the profile can cope with such a big battery.

Huawei highlighted this point by saying the Mate 2 was capable of 2 days battery life. And it had a reverse charge feature allowing you to use the phone to charge other phones eg iPhones.

So if you have a phone with a battery that doesn’t last through the day, yes you can turn off syncing, wifi , Bluetooth , GPS and background tasks or location services or more. But in reality you should I get a phone that does last long enough or carry a portable battery charger with you.

  1. I find people worry far too much about the battery which has an adverse effect on why you bought a particular phone in the first place and how you use it.
To me if the phone is able to do X, Y & Z then I will make full use of the facilities offered and damn what consequences it throws at the battery.

Yes, we should all look at what certain Apps do to the battery consumption (why install App ‘A’ when App ‘B’ does it just as well but with much less battery resources) but again don’t let the App of choice be governed by how much battery power you can get during the day…

What’s more important; monitoring the battery or running the App?
I know which one I always go for….. That and I always take with me my portable charger if it will be a heavy phone use day.

  2. There is personal and business use. Business continuity means you cannot be unavailable for an important client call. Not true perhaps for all employees, but when you are responsible for a business where your employees rely on you to sell work so that they can get paid and pay their mortgage payments, Business Continuity is a real issue. The Smartphone is a critical business tool now and frankly I don’t think Apple have understood this. Their MBA is a great business tool, however.
