Yesterday, I arranged for a 9am Apple Store Genius appointment to explore my 5S problems. 10 mins later I was leaving with a new iPhone 5S. It was that simple, no fuss just a quick explanation of the problems I was having with my battery, reboots and finger print scanner.
Even though I cannot complain with the whole manner, I do feel that if iOS 7 software is the root cause and I have simply been fogged off with a new phone then I will have the same problems. Time will tell, so I will keep you in the loop. Of course, a rogue app or two could have been the issue as well.
So here’s the killer Apple feature with their iOS devices, iPod Touches, iPhones and iPads. iCloud Backup. So I have a brand new iPhone. I hit restore. All my apps, games, settings and data are restored over the air in 2 hours flat. Within 2 hours I have connected to my mac and restored my 2,000 photos and 1,000 songs too on to my 5S. iCloud Keychain handles all my passwords now to the point I don’t know what my actual passwords are. I can enter into iCloud Keychain and copy out the password for any app(s) that needed a password. So music, media, photos, passwords, accounts, settings, saved data and 260 apps/games all back on my iPhone 5S , as easy as ABC. Try and do that out of the box on any other operating system.
As an update so far battery is slightly better but not amazing. Maybe, it’s the design. Slim phone for stylish finish equals small battery. For light to medium users the battery should last a day. For heavier users a charge point is essential.
In the meantime, I am expecting a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to arrive later today so I will see how it fares.
Ironic really that having a great restore capability is used to justify Apple’s approach to fixing hardware and software issues, that is, respond by just replacing a device!

Come on Jah. No way is that so. As I mentioned above not everyone will have 200 apps installed. My wife has 20 which probably is the average for most people.
Therefore having a proper backup and restore should one have their phone stolen, broken or just upgrading to a newer model is fantastic.

I agree it is fantastic but don’t you need to pay extra if over 5gb? Also I think Samsung provide something similar when you combine with Google’s back options. I have lots of devices and cloud based solutions like Dropbox and Amazon music mean you don’t really need a restore capability.

Yes. Everything with Apple is a premium. I have 2 devices backed up to icloud which leaves me 3.3gb free. Photos don’t count. Some apps use the icloud to move saved settings or game progress across devices. That’s handy.
Also restoring a game and still being half way thru because the game data is restored too is useful. It’s not always about adding just the app back.
I can’t recall how well Samsung and Google perform that task.

Gavin on the Note 3, would be interested to hear about your experience if you decide to install a different launcher as I have become unsatisfied with Touchwiz after using the Sony Android launcher/skin.

Jah, I don’t wish to hijack this blog but have you tried ‘Nova Launcher’?
I have been using Nova for quite some time, it’s the very first piece of software that gets installed onto my phones from new.

I use it too. Will install it soon on the Note 3. I also own Apex Launcher.

Gavin, this is the beauty of the locked system with iOS, it allows Apple to create and run a backup program unlike any other.
Swings and roundabouts really…… Do you live in an Android house where you decorate and change to your hearts content at the expense of not being able to put the house back together easily or go iOS where you’re living in a Grade 1 listed building not allowed to change anything by yourself but have the satisfaction you know where everything is and goes should any changes happen!

Wow what a great analogy! The point I would make is that I think MS Exhange, Dropbox, Amazon cloud music and Evernote are probably better individually than the all in one solution from Apple. But i like the idea of the game state saving and restore – sounds very handy.
Will try Nova today 🙂

As a Nokia and Windows Phone user, this is what keeps me jealous of Apple owners: quality of service.
I can wax lyrical about Nokia build quality, screen & camera tech, battery life (sorry, Gav!), etc., etc., but if any of it goes wrong I have to find a Nokia (don’t) Care Point and deal with disinterested and uninformed technical staff.
All too often I am more knowledgeable than they are of the foibles of Nokia products or Windows Phone and this should not be.
Of course, Nokia products are generally cheaper than Apple, but the relative quality of service is not in line with the price differential.
I was always taught to over-deliver on quality of service; to give the customer more than they had expected to receive.
This is one area where the new Nokia/Microsoft partnership will have to change if they wish to sell high-end devices because right now Nokia are delivering less than should be expected.
Good luck with your new Note3. Not a cheap device either – I sincerely hope you won’t have cause to experience whatever level of customer service Samsung deliver.
Because whatever it is, I think we can agree that it won’t be the same as Apple’s…
Happy New Year!
