Freemium apps ruin everything but are here to stay

Oh look, the game is free to download and play. Except to progress further or quicker you have to pay as you play.

This has arisen by our need for cheaper apps and games to the point free is best. So for developers to earn any money, they use in app purchases.

Now some developers are not so greedy with in app purchases, whereas others get greedy to the point a game loses it flow and becomes unplayable.

Unfortunately, with developers earning more money via freemium they are unlikely to disappear. Personally, I think this type of app or games often ruins the app and experience.

What do you think?

  1. Although this is a role most commonly found in games, you have to look how it also may effect the series non entertainment sector.
Obviously with titles such as a utility or a photo editor as an example they do not hold the same level of captive audience a game can attain. As such for developers to further their profit margins they will look to adopt similar traits as the ‘freemium’ games provide.
How long will it be before subscription services are more commonly found in non games?

  2. One thing I’d say, also, is that it’s become an anti-piracy measure. Even if someone downloads the free APK from a pirate site, the game will still require the IAP’s if the gamer wants to speed u their play,… so the developer still gets paid.

Unless a clever developer builds in a work-a-round into the APK. But who has the time and energy to do that? Virus builders?

Have to say, I’ve never pirated a game or any software. As a jobbing actor, I know the value of the work that is put into “entertainment”. I want to get paid, I know that the developers want to get paid and I know that it is only fair for that to happen. Just a small personal rant, there 😉
