Show some love to Russia – not if your Apple

Russia’s largest mobile phone networks have called Apple’s bluff and not renewed iphone agreements. These include MTS, Vimpelcom and Megafon with a combined 300 million subscribers.

As a result, the networks have got closer to Samsung and Windows Phone.

I just wonder if this is the networks playing hard ball with Apple to get a better deal, or the end for real. Luckily Apple can sell the phones directly, however this cannot be good news.

Is there really a budget iPhone or has Apple got another plan up their sleeve?

Apple’s normal strategy is to sell the last 2 versions of the iPhone for less money than previous, reduce the memory and make them the budget offering. So with the iPhone 5 being sold, the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 become the budget models respectively.

So leaked rumours of the new budget iPhone which comes in a variety of colours seems out of context. Unless, Apple is ditching the 4/4S completely and offering a cheaper option which is made from plastic but will come in several colours.

Of course, we should all be expecting the iPhone 5S, a phone that looks identical as the 5 but with upgraded internals that is better camera, processor etc.

But what if Apple surprised everyone and launched a plastic multicoloured lower cost budget iPhone and then jumped from the 5S straight to a new designed iPhone 6. With market pressures from other competitors it does need to maintain its competitive edge.

Apple is testing to new iPhone sizes at 4.7 and 5.7 inches

According to Reuters, Apple is testing to types of large screened iPhones, one using a 4.7 inch screen and the other at 5.7 inches. Assuming there is some truth to this rumour, and Apple does release a larger iPhone in 2014, you can guarantee it won’t be 5.7 inches as that is just too large for the masses. 4.7 inches is more realistic.

The next aspect will be what unique hardware features will the next iPhone include. With gesture support being introduced in iOS 7, will the home button become capacitive or be removed all together. Then there is the material and camera technology. 2014 could be a very interesting year for camera tech.

So if a 4.7 inch iPhone appeared, would you jump and buy this?

The original iPhone to be made obsolete by Apple

Everything reaches an end point and soon it will be the original iPhone. Released in 2007, nearly 6 years ago, it took the world by storm.

However, Apple Retail Stores will soon be classifying the original iPhone as obsolete. Products considered ‘obsolete’ are ineligible for service parts and documentation at retail stores and cannot be repaired at mail-in AppleCare Repair Centres either.

To be honest it is incredible that this phone is still being offered to be repaired this amount of time after its release. But then this is Apple, you offer one of the best customer services of any company.

San Francisco iPhone anti theft campaign

In San Francisco police are undertaking a new tactic to stop people from buying stolen iPhones by trapping them in undercover stings. Dressed in plain clothes, the officers are going around certain city areas and selling iPhones which they readily indicate are stolen. When someone tries to buy one, they make an arrest.

The goal is to reduce the market for stolen iPhones by scaring consumers away. The police say that in San Francisco half of all thefts involve stealing smartphones, and often thieves target women. The police are specifically setting up in areas that they know are popular for selling stolen goods, like the corner of 7th and Market Streets.

What would be even better would be for a stolen iPhone to be rendered useless by the phone company. That way if stolen it would have no value.
