Reuters- UK mobile phone retailer Phones 4u said it is seeking the appointment of administrators from PricewaterhouseCoopers after its key partner EE notified the company that it would not be renewing its network agreement.
This is after both Vodafone and O2 declined to renew their contracts with the retailer. 720 shops could close and 6,000 staff could lose their jobs.
This is bad news for the high street and for consumers. Dixons Carphone will soon have no competition and a free reign on pricing if Phones4U cannot be saved.

I never liked Phones 4 U as their sales people were very aggressive. I admit their CS had improved recently. Shame about those people losing their jobs. I suspect EE will buy it cheap now that they forced this situation to happen.

Any loss of competition is a bad thing. It now seems ironic that I acquired my current phone, on an EE contract from Phones 4 U as they were able to provide me with a far better deal (than the EE store next door!), and were very flexible and helpful.

I’m surprised Currys did nothing to help Phones 4U seeing as they have a phones sales unit inside the Currys stores. They would have helped each other bring customers into the stores.

Scrub that……. I realised after both Currys (Dixons) and Carphone Warehouse are joining forces.
