Samsung Galaxy Note 3 camera bad news

There is rustling emerging on the interwebs that the Note 3 won’t have optical image stabilization that many of its competitors have or are planning to include.

Instead, it will have the 13mp camera arrangement found in the S4.

So, will this put you off buying the Samsung Note 3 if this turns out to be true?

  1. Much as I’ve enjoyed my Note2 and much as I rate the camera on that device and the Galaxy SIII I would not let the lack if OIS stand in the way of me getting a Note3.

The Note is more of a business/productivity-focussed device than a camera superphone. I believe most will buy it for its form-factor and software load; features like s-pen, multi-window and big, easy-to-use keyboard.

The Note is big enough to view spreadsheets or office documents, and is still just about compact enough to hold to the ear to make a call without looking daft.

That said, I have come to realise that the build quality is slightly more important than the form-factor and I will probably not buy a Note3 unless it has exemplary build & materials.

My other device du jour is the Nokia Lumia 920. After a day with that the Note2 feels like the big piece of cheap, creaking plastic that it inevitably is.

The Lumia holds its finish even after a few hard knocks, whereas the Note2 has started losing the chrome off its ‘simulated metal’ (i.e. plastic) bezel after a 3″ drop onto a coffee mug.

Nokia is not the only brand with build quality; the HTC One has demonstrated that an Android device can match iPhone’s build, fit and finish.

Personally, I think the Note3 will not extend the success of the Notes 1 & 2.

Other Samsung devices like the Mega (smartphone) and their own small tablets will dilute the market for the Note3.

Besides, large-format devices from other manufacturers will also diminish the somewhat unique nature of Notes 1 & 2.

Slapping a great camera was never going to save the Note3, so I can see the logic of not including OIS it to help keep the price down – which will be needed in the light of such extensive competition.
